Peter did not give up. Dock Ock's body gave up, a factor that was absolutely out of Peter's control. In fact, it was only Peter's will to continue that kept it going as long as it did.
To portray this as a failure of Peter's will is a gross misreading of this issue.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
I'm fine with it, but I have a feeling that this is just like the ending of Mass Effect 3. At first I was fine with how the series ended, but the more I thought about it, the more I disliked it. Mass Effect was my favorite series and now I just dont even care about it just because the ending left me with a bad taste.
I have a feeling this will be the same and although I like it now, in a few months the idea will really bug me.
I mean after all, just half a year ago in Ends of the Earth we had Doc Ock trying to kill the world and now he's Spiderman
There was a lot of gnashing of teeth when Bru killed Steve Rogers... and from that we got some excellent stories and an exciting and viable character returned in Winter Soldier.
I expect good things to follow from this because Slott has been the architect of this massive story for basically 100 issues. I believe he knows how it is going to end and that it will have been a story worth reading.
The story of what makes a Spider-Man is an interesting one and the idea that a monster like Ock simply lacked the perspective and experience to be a better person has my attention. But I like motives and psychology, so he's pushing my happy buttons.

I will never read this story line, but from what I hear of it, it is yet another reason I am grateful that I quite reading Spidey comics back when they brought Norman Osborn back.

That's a good point about Steve Rogers' death. Even when people know a change is temporary, people still get up in arms about it.
The problem for me is that it seems obvious that circumstances make Peter the person who he is. It's the very basis of his origin and has been a theme ever since. The same logic holds for Doc Ock, since he's just as much a product of his own history and personality. I guess the contrast between the two and which personality will become dominant is the crux of Superior Spider-Man, but it already seems like Peter is winning out by the very nature of Doc Ock continuing to be Spider-Man.
The premise is a good one, but I'm a little less sold on it. I might read the first issue, but most likely will pick up the rest in trades or in the bargain bin if it becomes part of the official numbering. I don't think I can tolerate Doc Ock in any kind of leading role for more than a few issues at a time.
I think the same story could have been done with Peter having to deal with Doc Ock's memories, and I might have enjoyed that a bit more, although it's not like Peter being tempted to do evil hasn't been done a load of times more so it could have been a little more of a cliché.
$8 for Spidey 700? GTFO!! No wonder people are up in arms. So glad that I stopped buying ASM - and have no incentive to pick it back up anytime soon. Geez.

I have to admit I finished ASM 700 last night looked at my wife and said "Well that sucks, I am not sure if I want to keep reading this." (refering to superior spiderman)
After sleeping on it , I have to admit I do not like the ending , but I am willing to follow the story for a while.
The one thing that keeps going threw the back of my head is HOBGOBLIN. I had this same feeling ( not nearly as intense) when Slott "killed" Kingsly ... so I am going to give him a chance.
So, is no one here bringing up the fact that with Doc Ock parading around as Peter means that every time he's with MJ, it's basically sex by deception, which is classified as sexual assault?
....yeah....I don't think I'm going to read Spider-Man anymore.
but...because of the deal with Mephisto, he's not.....wait, but then....uurhhggh.....................*_*

Did he bring Kingsley back? Because I thought the way he was supposedly killed was really lame. Haven't read much Spidey since then.

The Hobgoblin who was killed was actually his brother. Roderick Kingsley came back a few issues ago to smack around Phil Urich, and the two ended up attacking Spider-Man together. It was a pretty good story.

It is not. Yes, Ock's body is failing, but instead of continuing to fight, Parker makes Ock "remember" Parker's life, extracts a promise (from someone who just tried to burn the world) from Ock that he'll be good and dies.

I stopped reading ASM 700 at the end of the main story and haven't picked it up since. And I probably won't.
There was no need for this. One of the reasons for Nu52 was that it was too hard for new readers to pick up a book when there was 50 years (or more) of continuity to slog through.
That's really NOT the case here. Marvel has banked close to a billion dollars (or more) off of the Spider-man movie franchise over the last 10 years. People know the Peter Parker story. People like the Peter Parker story.
Now, someone who sees the movies goes into a comic shop, picks up Stuperior Spidey and goes "WTF? What is this? Never mind."
Why the asshats and sheep humpers at Marvel havent figured this out yet, I don't know. But based on the performance of all the Marvel movies (Iron Man thru Avengers) people LIKE the Marvel formula. It works. And it makes tons of filthy ####in' lucre for them.
This was NOT necessary.

Honestly, the more I think about this the less I even wanna continue with comics in general and all that goes with it. Spidey was always 95% of the reason I was into the whole comics scene in the first place.
This abomination of desolation just makes me wanna puke and aim it squarely at Marvel's shoes.
