For RealmWorx, it's about unifying the community and push forward with a "professional" (read: $$$) event that will put HeroClix on the same tier as all the other "big money" games.
And that right there kills any interest I might have for it (outside of my concerns about tcgplayer credit). I have ZERO desire to compete in any events where the goal is a big money series. Clix is competitive enough in some respects when its just bits of plastic on the line. At gencon this past year we saw a couple of instances of the "ugly" side of gaming where big prizes are up for grabs. Now multiply that times 15,000.
One of the best parts of clix is the community. The community is set apart from other games that DO have a big money series...and I have to wonder if that's not part of the reason.
The other thing that's bugging me about the whole thing is that retailers have to pay to host an event that, other than having some butts in seats, they don't get much out of. But those venues have butts in seats already with local events. Will having a $100 qualifier increase those numbers? And, as a player, if you aren't interested in the big money series (ie, won't be going to DragonCon), what's the incentive to go and play? Maybe a pair of dice or a hat?
I see what's trying to be done. I don't know that I personally agree with the end result. Regardless, the path to get there seems a bit 'thorny'.
Best of luck, but its not for me.
There are 542,000 children in foster care. Talk to your local foster and adoptive agency. You could change a life.
Trust me on this; it wasn't for lack of trying. If you distill what is going on with the event (and follow the money); you'll see that this really boils down to an event that is for players, by players. Sure there's an opportunity to make money (and we've committed to rolling excess funds into future ROC events to grow the prize pool) ... but that's never really been the driving factor behind ROC. For RealmWorx, it's about unifying the community and push forward with a "professional" (read: $$$) event that will put HeroClix on the same tier as all the other "big money" games.
But it's only going to be as successful as the support that we receive from the community and event planners ... and we have A LOT of confidence that it will be successful (investments have been made; product is ordered ... overhead is burdened)!
Oh I don't doubt you guys tried to work something out with WK, even if they don't seem inclined to respond to general customer inquires (seriously, what business doesn't have a customer service email/phone/something?).
My issue is that from what is presented here I don't have anything to use to sell a roadtrip to possible players. A 3-4 hour drive to play in an event whose only actual listed prize is qualification into another event with an 11 hour drive (set up a mere two weeks after the money vacuum that is Gencon) is laughable.
While I certainly wouldn't expect Magic level regional qualifiers right away there has to be some reason for the events to become that scale; a big part of growing an event is giving the already sizable player base of clix a reason to come to to it.
They aren't doing any more travel vouchers? Dragon Con was a pretty expensive Con to get too. Hotel rooms were stupid expensive, way worse than Indianapolis for Gencon was.
We cut out travel vouchers because they were not being fully utilized so we were charging something to venues that may not be used. Same for badges which also had a requirement for us to turn in a list and pay for in advance. So we cut them out and reduced the price of the kits to venues.
Yeah hotels downtown can be expensive. I tend to stay eight to ten miles out. Last year I got a suite at a very nice hotel for under $100 per night. Cheaper hotels in that distance can be booked for even less.
Of course I had to see if there was a Florida one and Fort Walton Beach, Fl popped up. I don't want to be a downer, but that might as well not be in Florida. I can't blame anyone but myself. Though Centralized near Orlando would have been great for the whole state. Fort Walton Beach is all the way near the tip of the panhandle probably closer to 4 other states than the majority of the state of Florida. Far as I know you just had to apply and you got a tournament. So if no other place in Florida did that then I guess I should be happy. Though the 3 in GA are probably closer to me than the 1 in Fort Walton Beach.
Applications can still be made. Click the link and join the fun.
I don't think so. I went to the tcgplayer website and tried to do a search for HC in their store. Using the pull down list for sets, they don't even have an option for the last three sets (I checked back to ASM).
It also looks like its more of an ebay-like place where people sell their own stuff. Anybody used tcgplayer for buying/selling? Anybody help with how it works?
Heroclix is fairly new to the site. They have a lot of singles and will be adding in more. The peer to peer setup is something mew also that I saw just after Gen Con. I believe they are hoping that ROC will boost their site just like Magic did for them.
I want to be interested in this - I really do - but as much as this appears to want to be a "Big Deal" the lack of any real incentive (as Hair10 pointed out and I hate to agree with him) is holding me back.
I organized roadtrips like crazy when I had a small player base for L5R in central IL; we drove everywhere from Kansas City to Columbus to Green Bay; but those events were properly supported by the company that makes the game and had announced prizes that made us want to make the trip.
As much as I really want to do big Heroclix events, I can't justify driving solo and I'll have a hard sell telling people that they can win hats, dice and maybe the chance to drive to Atlanta on their own dime for a shot at an actual prize.
I am relatively sure that most if not all the venues will have much more in prizes to offer than the prize kit. I would have loved to have provided con le's and/or le's to every event. Unfortunately I do not know of away to get that much prize support for 50 plus tournaments, which is what we think we will run. Even I if I spent the time (which would be a lot) trying to acquire them the likelihood of them being consistent form event to event is not good.
I could be wrong. It's just my impression from browsing the site. Anybody have any experience with buying/selling on tcgplayer that they want to share?
It is new Hair but I can put you in touch directly with someone that can help you. PM me if you want the info.
I've had time to digest this information for a while now. As judge of Redcaps Corner I had some information before this announcement. After thinking about everything I believe it is a good start although I do have concerns.
The prize structure is my number one concern. We need more information on this prize point thing. Right now people are playing for a chance to play for a chance to get a piece of $15,000. It seems like there was an an issue somewhere along the way and the points became the big prize. Dice and hats are fun giveaway items but as far as actual prizes they're not a draw. You're draw right now is the maps. They're something new and exciting that people will want. But for 650 I get the same amount as the $200 kit. I think this is something that should be looked at as like I said the maps are the main draw until we hear what points get you.
Also, just an idea to throw out there. I been doing custom dice and other stuff for years. Over the years I kind of figured out the custom game as I went and learned a few things. So I just want you to know that I'm not just some noob offering advice. A lot of people seen me at cons hustling my butt off. With that, my advice. Drop the hats and get sack packs instead. People will use those more and since people winning them will likely be going to cons they will be a welcome prize. Next, change the poker chips. Get red and yellow chips. One side can say ROC or HCREALMS, the other side can be a pic of an object. Not everyone uses poker chips for markers, everyone uses objects (most of the time). The best part is it would make a nice add-on to the map.
Anyway, maybe you can start a ROC group for the judges on realms to discuss things with you without having to post in public like this. Either way, I look forward to Redcaps having our super qualifier early April.

Hey Steve,
I wanted to talk to you today anyway. I am planning on trying to talk to all the applicants over the next few days. Anyway how about giving me a call please.

Awesome . PM me your number again and I'll call when I leave work in an hour.

So why are you charging venues $650 when they will still have to go out of their way to spend more money to buy better prizes that people actually want? $650 for some plain dice, poker chips, hats, and some point cards (whatever those are)? And the original price was $1,000 with pretty much no information for what they were even getting in the kit (And from what I can tell the prizes where changed after the deadline for the applications was even due. Talk about a bait and switch.). I like the idea of all of this but the prize structure and cost is not well thought out.

As far as I know no money was collected prior to the TCGPlayer website was set up. So, in other words, if you don't want to run one don't, and you aren't out any money at this point.
So I am not seeing any "bait and switch" but thanks for the negative label.
What we do in life echoes in eternity!
Respect is a given, only disrespect can be earned.

There was never a bait and switch. Those prizes have been in place since Gen Con. Prices were reduced at same time. We reduced those prices at Gen Con when we were told we would get no prize support in the way of plastic. That changed and we were told that we were. We have been waiting to see that prize support would be. Unfortunately it ended up being none. So we ended up being right where were at Gencon.
All applicants were informed post Gen Con of their approval and were told what was going on and what the hold up was. No bait and switch per your implications. The $650 goes all toward ROC Cash prizes, prizes, gift certificates and redeemable prizes . Any excess will be pumped back into ROC where we may include more prizes and/or raise the cash level.
The dice do look plain don't they? Please note that images may be changed because that image is not our final product. The dice will be custom and cool like all of Realms dice have been.
The points cards are explained in the announcement:
Points Card
Points cards will come with various point values. These points can be accumulated and used for redemption of prizes at TCGPlayer.com. The more points that a player can accumulate will offer that player a higher level of prizes. Points can be used for for qualification at the championship at Dragon*Con 2014 in Atlanta Georgia. The more points that player can accumulate will offer that player a further starting point of play at Dragon*Con. Cards can also be traded, sold, and given away.
