Is there any chance that ONE THREAD helping a guy decide what to buy for X-WING can stay on topic without devolving into this same debate?
Apparently not.
My recommendation would be the following (you will probably need to find someone with spare upgrade cards for some of this):
Dark Side - 1 starter, 1 TIE fighter booster, 1 TIE Phantom
Then build the following fleet:
(43)TIE Phantom "Echo"
-- Advanced Cloaking Device
-- Predator
-- Advanced Sensors
-- Darth Vader
(20) Howlrunner
--Swarm Tactics
(16) Backstabber
(19) Mauler Mithel
-- Squad Leader
It's a 98 point fleet.
For Light Side, I'd say grab a Falcon to learn the game, along with a starter of course, and then either a B-Wing or an X-Wing, or both. Chewbacca + Wedge + Biggs, or Chewbacca + Biggs + a B-Wing generic Dagger Pilot with upgrades. I'm more of a Dark Side player, though, so figuring out optimization may be tough for me.
That squad also requires you to get the Defender and the Shuttle. Also, words can't describe just how bad, bad, bad it is for you to put Darth Vader into a Phantom.
Bombers and Defenders are still the ideal purchases to get a 100pt squad (unless you really want to run the 75pt Boba Fett...).
Until you have around 5 Imperial Ships and at minimum 3 Rebel ships, it will be tough making 100 pt squads. Most Imperial ships tend to be cheaper than Rebels, though that is starting to balance out with some of the newer additions.
2 Core Sets really speeds up games with friends. Double the templates (DO NOT use the Attack Wing templates, the banks are different), enough dice for most every situation. 3 of each type of dice is definitely not enough for the typical 4 dice range 1 attack, or 4 dice range 3 evade. Plus its useful having 2 X-Wings and 4 TIE Fighters. They remain the backbone of builds.
You can play upgrade heavy, but X-Wing lends itself well to playing ships without many upgrades. It is kind of the inverse of Attack Wing. With the low overall health, lower attack, and overall higher evade, sticking all those points on a single ship just doesn't seem like a great idea. Add to the mix that missiles, torpedoes, and bombs/mines are all 1 use items.
You will probably have the most fun playing 60-70 pt games until you get 3-4 rebel ships and 5-6 Imperial (unless you grab the expensive ones like the Lambda Shuttle, the Firespray, Defender, Phantom).
Honestly though, you can't really go wrong with 1 of anything. I would question multiples of some ships, however there isn't even fault with getting more than 100 pts worth of some ships if you plan to play Epic Games. A full squad of 12 X-Wings sounds like a TON of fun!

Yeah, my intention isn't to play full 100-point games right out the gates. From peeking at some point values, I had estimated 40-60 would be the range for what I'm looking at, for now. A second starter + another ship or two for each faction sounds like it should bring me closer to the 100-point mark, though.
Yeah, crew like Recon Specialist, Rebel Captive, or even Navigator are much better than Vader.
Or Mara when Wave 5 drops...but yeah, I'm looking at the Recon Specialist first........the double focus will probably come up when I'm rolling 4+ for both attack and defense(while cloaked of course).
It is almost upon us! Are you prepared for the Quarmageddon?
OK, so after an evilbay-coupon-induced impulse buy, I've got a starter and Imperial Aces on the way, which leaves the Rebel Scum outgunned. Thinking a B-Wing and either X-Wing or A-Wing to follow up.

I'd go for a 2nd X-wing first, or a Y-wing....or the Falcon!
I got a Headhunter this weekend, it's not dominant but it's a cool cheap filler, kind of a "Y-wing lite". the Assault missles paired with the pilot who has the "target is hit even if it takes no damage" ability is quite cool.

With those options, I'd go B-Wing and X-Wing. I'm not super crazy about the A-Wing, and the X-Wing pack gets you Wedge Antilles.
If I haven't mentioned Wedge Antilles in every post, I am failing my mission.
