You mean with energy explosion? You get to choose whether you use it or not. It's not always "on" like something like toughness.

But if you did want to energy explode your own face, I mean, would be cool, too.

Sure it is. It says that you may include adjacent characters in the area of effect. So you can choose whether to do it or not.
