Originally posted by luftvier This is not real life though...nor is it history...it is a game, and thusly, unbalanced scenarios are not really fun, nor are they good for the game. Liao has has the cards stacked against them for every scenario so far.
It's quite obvious that they desire for Liao to lose the initial incursion, for if the scenarios were actually fair, Liao woud win and wipe out a big ol' chunk of the republic, soiling WK's plans and Stackpole's new pet characters.
Preach on my brother. Liao has been delt a horrible hand. Break out the nukes. :)
First, the scenario is unbalanced, and Wizkids should not be writing these. If they are going to use things like rankings and have these determine who can be invited to nationals, who will want to play the underdog in such a weakly written scenario to advance storyline?
Second, it is very discouraging to players to be given a scenario where they play a faction and lose, cause the opponent can overpower them and sit back bombarding with artillery. If Wizkids had wanted to be fair, they should have said, "The Swordsworn must take the plateau. They start off with 400 points as compared to the 300 points of the Liao forces. However, since the Swordsworn player is fighting up the plateau, they may not take any artillery."
Now, Faction Wars was much more fun, and we actually got to affect the taking of a planet without these ridiculous storyline ideas written by people who don't consider that people either a) worry about rankings, or b) hate playing the underdog in scenarios since they won't be eligible to win anything. At least at one of the venues I go to, they were giving the fellowship to the best player of the losing side.
the difference between this scenario and a medeival seige is that the defenders had a castle to hide behind. the liao were not in a forified position at all, they were just on the high ground which is by the looks of it a steep hill...
but then again, why should we compare this scenario to real life? this is a game that has almost nothing that is realistic. anybody who has any common sense and isnt turning a blind eye can see that this scenario is stacked against liao. attack penalties and movement penalties do not make up for a 100pts. of a battleforce.
I played Liao in this scenario, twice and have noticed that the only way for Liao to win this scenario is to go on a mad rush and attack the swordsworn player as quick as possible, trying to win VC1 and VC 3. I used the following army the second time I played Liao:
I infiltrated the DF Trike Squad, and moved the Liao Minigun Cycle and the trike towards my opponent's deployment zone as quick as possible. I pushed them to them die. Angus also ran toward my opponent's deployment zone and needed to kill of more than 26 points of enemy units. After the Minigun Cycle and Trike Squad died, Angus would charge, death from above, and explode his ammo as quick as possible to go to salvage. Needless to say, this tactic only won me a single game. However, the army did steal a VC from another of my opponents which cost him the SS Warhammer (it came down to VCs for the SS players, big surprise)!
What incentive does WK have to make better campaign games? Competition would be a great thing for MW. Someone needs to produce a Robotech game to give WK a run. The new D&D game has blown the doors off MK locally.
At my usual venue the experanced players have been playing House Lio. We haven't fought each other, and have been winning all the campaigns. but we have been helpping the young/new players.

Giant robot games that should scare the %^*%& out of WK (since they compete with MWDA): CAV and (to a lesser extent) Warmachine. Yeah, Warmachine is steam-punk fantasy, but the 'jacks (pseudo-mechs) are incredibly kewl sculpts, and yes, you can pick up and throw enemy models with your 'jacks, and slam a 'jack into enemy forces, scattering them like bowling pins.
D&D Minis is doing very well locally - the FLGS has sold out on several occasions. I do not recall the last time they sold out of a MK set (in the last 6 months) without the set being already discontinued.
Originally posted by dirtmongrel I had wanted to play swordsworn because I like them more ( no offense) but someone needed to switch sides and I hadn't made an army yet, so I switched and won 2 out of 3 and got 1st place.
Well, at my second venue, swordsworn won all of the games (I think). I decided to play swordsworn because I had wanted to play them originally anyway. I only got third this time, though.
The problem is that Wiztops is putting out a campaign that might be interesting as a "just for fun" game. When prizes are on the line people will do what ever is necessary to win regardless of the intent of the game.
