Originally posted by plasticman Im right there with you on this (as is most of my players). I dont like the fact that I'm losing several thousand dollars worth of Mechwarrior in tournament play. I know that several of the players who were buying cases of FP have cancelled their orders and are now only buying singles. They don't want to find that, in a year, the $500 they sink into the case is useless in most tournaments. As for new players, thats honestly going to be their only hope. Old time players, I believe, have learned a huge lesson with the retirement. Never buy a case...only buy the singles you will use. That way you're not out as much money when they retire.
God I'm feeling like a broken record these days.....
Look, all pieces will be full tournament legal for TWO years at the very least. Considering thats around 90+ FREE tournaments if you're playing just once a week, the cost isnt as bad as you think. And the whole purpose for the tournaments is to both get new players active in the community and to entice older players to remain in the game and to be repeat customers.
Think about this for a second; Do you demand to see the next Star Wars movie because you bought tickets to the last 2? Do you expect to get your next meal free because you ate at that resturant a couple months ago? Should an online game let you play for free forever after you pay for a year? Its the same basic this with retirement; in exchange for buying their product (in itself a fair exchange since you could just play for fun with friends), they provide tournaments and prizes at no additional cost (I'm not counting the costs of Draft or Sealed since you are still getting pieces for standard cost if not less) for a certain period of time. Look at it from WK's point of view: if you are just using all the older pieces and not buying new stuff, why should they bother providing more free stuff to you at a considerable cost (remember all those pieces cost money to produce and ship, and considering how many tournaments go on all around its probably a lot more then you'd think)? If you ARE buying and using the newer stuff instead of the old for tournaments, then retirement becomes a moot point when it comes to not being able to use old stuff in some tournaments.
I understand a big part of all this is the feeling that Wizkids somehow lied about never retiring pieces. I personally can't remember whether they said so or not, but I DO remember they said they'd never BAN a specific piece like MtG has and they've stuck to that even when there have been a number of pieces that were asking for it. Even if they DID, situations can and apparently have changed.
We all know there are problem units in the first couple sets, and since trying to ban some of them would bring unholy hell as people faught over which to ban and which not to, the only fair way to do it is to remove them from the ranked tournament field (noticed I said ranked, since you can still use all pieces for unrestricted, and considering what happend the last time they did so I doubt WK would stop supporting those anytime soon.)
Then you have the newer players. We already have two sets sold out and the others cannot be too far behind. Would it really be fair for someone brand new to the game to have to face the Schmitt/Maxim combo or the DF Donars without the chance to retaliate in kind? And lets not bring up the secondary market, as WK has repeatedly said they dont take it into consideration and they really shouldn't. Someone shouldnt be forced to pay $20 bucks for one piece they think they need to be competetive, it smells too much like Magic and I've had issues with that and other things for a long time.
I am sorry for the length of this rant, I'm just sick of people making it sound like WizKids is full of Snivley Whiplash type crooks trying to squeeze as much money as possible from hapless customers (that's big oil's job). Yes they are a company, and yes they have to look at the bottom line a lot, but that does not mean that is ALL they are interested in.
I also had a few choice words for those cornholios who were saying they hoped WK died and everyone lost their jobs, but decided to not put them up so this post wont be deleted and the mods wouldnt have to slap me down. This is people's livelyhoods we're talking about, and you have NO right to talk of them like that. They are trying to make an enjoyable form of entertainment and should not be berated as such.
And Warflail, about the Highlanders getting absorbed into the RotS, look at it like this; the way the painting seems to be progressing, maybe they'll go back to the old school Tartan paint schemes the Highlanders used to use before the Jihad. Then you could pain all the cockpits blue and white and yell "FREEDOM!" the entire game :)
The main thing i HATE is set retirement. now that that is out of the way...
The game used to be a simple, fun game where all the info you needed to play was right on the piece. Now its on cards also. one of the major strengths of this game before was simplicity, and now thats basically out the window. I'm not going to make up my mind though untill it comes out, and i have had a full look at it. but personally im a little bit sceptical about the "improvement" that this may bring.
Dont get me wrong, it definately sounds fun and very interesting... but too complicated. If the environmental cards have too much of an effect i wont be too happy, same with pilot cards. if there are just a few key pilot cards that are "uber" and all the rest basically useless... which is what im actually expecting, after seeing many other card games and CMGs in my lifetime, there are ALWAYS a few choice cards or units, and the rest are less impressive, its already happened reapededly in this game alone. but you never know. It looks great on paper honestly, but im not sure it will play out too great... well just have to see.
sorry to rain on anybody's parade, but im not much of an optimist...
Oh, and Psycho:
The rules BEFORE were already complicated, e.g., why can't my Maxim tow a 20-ton Locust but it can tow a 100-ton Behemoth? and the VTOL rules were whack. Face it, you'd rather have more complicated rules than broken and illogical ones, right?
Federated Commonwealth. There, I said it. Don't think it'll happen.
Too much bloody water under the bridge for the Fed Suns and the
Lyrans for that ever to happen again. ;)
For those interested here are the meanings of 2 of the new mechs

Whoa, thanks for the info, didnt even realize that.
so they are releasing the faction leaders of the HL, DF and SC. the last time they released a faction leader (SW) he got overthrown. but i really wanted to get my hands on katana's set (mech + pilot).
Does everybody realize we will be hunting rare cards (pilots) to pair up with an even rarer mech figure?
I hope WK realize that the reason nobody fields an AA on a regular basis is that arty is a more efficient weapon against vtols. the mushroom clouds must be really high in the MW universe.
''Since the design of the figure bases is not changing, this can't really be considered MW2.0.''

i thought the new mechs, the quad mechs did have new bases... like mounts now in 2.0?
