Originally posted by Yandros Oh, BTW - I was at a store yesterday and played a 400 point game where my opponent ran 2 of them. Wraith hit one of them (then that was useless), and I put a ThornMaiden on the other (which meant it was only a matter of time till it was useless)..
yep, vs. a bad player I can win too even if he fields an Adrac.
2 Shield golems isn't good you have to play 1 (*,**) to be most effective in games under +/-600 points so you can surround him properly.
rgrayua and you didn't playtest the shieldgolem, you just played vs. a player playing with them.
8 move isn't bad for a ranged based faction (AG) and KI can move him at 12 speed.
So your arguments have no base on the move isue.
shield golems are best when surrounded with great quality cost figs (altem guardsmen, amotep gunners,Battle queens, KI:chargers,Quarterstaff warriors).
oh and Adrac/Corpheus/Dragons/Titans hits those figs on a 7, well we already crossed that bridge.
It's all the other figs that suffer (you know the other 99% ).

Sorry I fail to see the distinction. Could my opponent have made a better army using a Shield Golem? Certainly. But it was still a Shield Golem army.

My point was, isn't this what is already done with the EGM and doesn't she give you more (i.e Healing, Command, Easy Breaks, Shake-Off Damage, Regeneration) than just Defend, which is all the Shield Golem gives.
The Shield Golem gives you more because of it's faction. You save actions thus it helps your army. The SG is not an uber fig because it is not a first strike weapon. Corphy, and the like can hit for so much damage from so far away that in one shot you change the direction of the game. With the SG you have more of a defence against Corphy and his ilk. Since Corphy is going to get the first shot, you need to be able to defend that shot then hit back, with range or melee.
One other thing of note in this playtest session was the fact that in an army already heavy with the storm golem, there is a paladin priest! AND the shield golem. I don't think people who want to maximize the shield golem's effectiveness will be sporting 86 pt healers with 9 atk and 0 dmg too often...more likely you will see Lv3 Seeress Kess at 46 pts with two arrows and enhancement, or something like that...(I mean figures that are lighter in cost but who still have pretty good attack power, to offset the cost of the shield golem AND a unique like stormy or AD or Corphy...)
If the majority of armies at Nationals have Shield Golems then that should tell us something. If the winning army has one, that will tell us a lot. Six months from now if I see Shield Golems in 200 or 300 point tournaments as often as I see Amazon Dracs then I will gladly admit I'm wrong. But for now, I don't see it becoming that prevalent in a 200 or 300 point competitive army. I don't see replacing the EGM in Wkura's tank with a Shield Golem because it can move in formation. Like I said time will tell.

Like I said, it may not have been the BEST Shield Golem army; but it was a Shield Golem army none the less.
Like what's probably already been stated, the disadvantages include:
1) Cost - Very expensive for 200, uncomfotable in 300, maybe fine in 400+
2) No decent attack - Definitely not for marching straight into the enemy
3) Factions - Being AG, he's useless except for guarding support figures. Being KI, he's good to help carry figures up to base, but his high cost is usually much better spent on more infantry.
I think in a huge (2,000+) Conquest game, the Shield Golem is usful in guarding your range formatons and healers. Bit pricey for just support, but quite useful to prevent the little harrassers that get around your main forces.

the question was has anybody playtested it ?
playtesting is BOTH players make the best armies they can build with the fig and go through all the right/wrong moves whilst playing.
playing vs. a player with a Shield Golem is what you did.
an army with only Podo in it makes it also an Orc army ?

1) yes, his cost is high for what he does, but doable in 200/300.
why?
because the opponent has to use a 106 minimum fig to bust even 1 fig in that formation. yes ! high defend gains point-advantage.
would you rather have had thesame SG for 20 points ?
2)yes, that's what the other 4 figs (or more) in the formation are for !
the SG only gets them there in 1 piece.
3)factions-
being AG he's useless except for moving your GREAT undercosted ranged figs up the field whilst taking no casualities whatsoever.
being KI, he's only good to move your chargers up the field (with 22 defence vs. range) so you get your chargers there in 1 piece with first strike capability.
opponent got 1 lucky shot ? well, your fig still has 20 defend see if they can do it again.

it doesn't have bound therefor it isn't úber ?
NO, an úberfigure is a figure that makes 99% (or more) of the available figs absolete.
SG makes 99% of the figs absolete (as does the EGM in the current enviroment), so it IS úber.
SG makes Corphy the best choice vs. that formation (be honest, if you don't use the SG in a formation he IS worthless) I don't see a whole lot of other figs that have a reasonable chance of hitting a WELL-build SG formation on a 7.
this figure is going to bring change to the game. just like corphy and amazon drac did. they both brought big bound with high attack avaliabe to everyone. now the shield golem brings big defence to the game at a playable cost. before the SG a 20 def was pretty high even for a unique. now we have a standerd figure that can bring the same thing to not just itself but a formation. outside of uniques how many figures can boast a decent attack against that kind of defance. yes 60 some points is high for a 200 point game but then people seem to like amazon for over 100 pts. take a look at some of the older figures for AG like the gunners. they are great figure with good attack and damage but they don't get played cause of such low defance. now put to red ones with 2 enhancers take your pick of demi or ESA and you still have room to put a magic healer or some harassers. with that shield golem giving that 20 defance to the formation most non-unique figures are going have to be used in a formation fire to even have a good chance at hitting the front line. the SG i think will bring back alot of pre big bounders back into play. i am going to nationals and i have been looking at that shield golem more and more just cause its so #### hard to hit without big figures or alot of auto damage

 at least I can play vs. Corphy/Adrac and have a CHANCE of beating them (ONLY IF I play with a formation of LI figs off course !:( )
which 99% of figs from the other factions get to hit 20 defence (also commonly found on like TITANS ) .
Oh Yeah Fromation attacks are an idea: I'm glad you won't be packing figs like the Amotep gunner (F/L WITH enhancement !!).
yes it will bring back amotep gunners (if they were ever gone) etc. , but for the rest of ALL the other factions it will mean: no 13 AV=> into the trashcan with you.
Anyone that thinks for a minute that a SGs will not be showing up at Nationals is kidding themselves. People were playing everything from Nub gunners to Vald and a Graverobber last year. You will see some very goofy stuff at Nationals along with some very good stuff.
All the times here on the realms you'll see an army post and people will say "this and that" will destory it and the next response is no one in their right mind would play "this and that" in a big time tournie. Well guess what, you are going to see alot of "this and that armies"
One reason the Ad is a pain is dodge. If a player gets hot with the dodge rolls it kills you. Well the SG provides the same thing to a degree. One will need atleast a 7 to hit it whihc s right on the line. The odds are in attackers favor but that does not make it an auto hit. After that it goes down hill.
As a whole i do not think past sealed SG are going to show up alot but they will show up and they will be a pain
etc... these all become usable for me again, since now I don't have to worry so much about having all my figures slaughtered before I can deliver them to the battle. If I run with cheaper figures...then great the AMDrac can nail a figure...but now I am likely within range to do damage with my other guys
The SG can be dealt with by formation fire (3 attackers with 10 Attack = 14 Attack), venom, ram, shakeoff...you have a number of tactics to take it on with.
The SG can not do damage back AND if the other person is totally relying on it to be his savior...he is for a world of disappointment as soon as its defense drops...it becomes a "dead" weight then...an expensive dead weight.
This SG combined with some of the recent rule changes - has shaken up the playing field a bit more. The problem people are really having is....what army do I run that beats everything. I don't think there is one anymore. NOw it falls back to player tactics.
BTW, I recently had a tournament where we had to buy a booster of Uprising that we HAD to use all the figures...then we could add others to bring total to 200 pt.
Without a SG or a unique - I won the tournament. 1/2 the players HAD pulled SGs and I had to fight 2 of them for the win (I had Falconer *, Magestone knight*, Nymph*, Whelp Alchem*** and added a * Standard Bearer, ** Thorn Maiden and a ** Crystal protector). My VIP was the Thorn Maiden.
Granted, these players were still relatively new to using the SGs properly and since I had figured I would likely face one - I had thought out my choices ahead of time and WAS prepared. You should see the face of someone who thought they would walk all over you with a SG in their amy (LOL)
But the results were the same...pick off anyone that pokes their nose out from the SG - or keep firing until you hit and base the SG to slow it up or do damage to drop the defense value. If the player is limited to "Having" to keep their units in contact with the SG (or they are easily disposed of) then that also opens opportunities for you to control the flow of the battle.
I like the SG. I may not use him much, but I like that he makes the playing field a little less certain.

1) I don'play AG/KI and NEVER will: I play ORCS,MS/Shyft.
YES, it makes some of YOUR older figs playable again (we already said this !!) but all MY figs are becoming more worthless.
2) been there done that, did you read the whole discussion ?
and the best part of it is: vs. a good player it cannot be done !
No, I don't want ALL my figs to be úberpowerfull so I can make the best army.
I want to have a CHANCE of beating other armies though.
3)yep, you took a 13 inch bounder, 18 DEFEND fig and a PA/Venom fig.
out of 1 booster you got VERY good figs, did everybody else also ?
the SG gives 20 defend so if anybody Charges/bound away from it your the one being damaged and he CAN move to base that fig again with SG.
keep on firing until you hit, how convenient that the opponent doesn't shoot you back with his superrior/equal range ?!
actually the SG makes the playing field more certain !
you just dispose of the figs that CAN hit him and you automatically win barring REALLY amazing rolls from your opponent !
