as a quick aiside, I loved how few people complained about the fluff when Tara Campbell upgraded her hatchetman to a battlemaster
for one thing, an assault mech makes a better ride for the Duchess, I guess this was an experimental phase. heck, I'm a CW player and Anastasia should have had a Ryoken II, but I hate that ugly oversized sculpt. any ryoken IIC (and king crab) are waay outta scale.lol
at the time people found it funny or underwhelming that Aaron Sandoval had a weirdo looking medium and that Katana Tormark had a teenie weenie cute little nyx that I just wanna pinch on its red cheeks
And that is exactly who these pieces are made for. They are designed for the collectors and, to a lesser extent, the casual player.
When you put it that way, it makes a lot of sense. I think it can be fair to say that disclaimers from managment would be nice so we can be guided into how we can see or accept certain product.
Being fans of the game, we can be a passionate lot, so it is expected that feedback of all manner can erupt. I am sure your clarification can set things straight. We love Mechwarrior all the same, I figure many express that in a plethora of ways.
God listen to yourselves. Are you making anything better or just horse whipping the few that asked for a change or asked why it was that way/ Horsewhipping. Are we just as upset/ most of us are. Maybe if we work together we can make this game great again and start having some fun. If you can acccept that sorry. But, I for one will Game on.
Just think about how it's done. It could just be a short hop, step and jump from "no more Historical pilots, ever" (Kelly) to "Oh blow it, no more Mechwarrior, ever."
Ever done a job and not felt appreciated?
I'm not bashing you for offering critique - heck, I've done that enough myself in the past (and on occasion just as vehemently). What is dangerous is saying it in a way that demoralises the people who are responsible for a game you purport to love.
I think that WK were in a no-win situation with Historical pilots. Natasha Kerensky obliterated enough Falcon 'Mechs on Twycross in individual duels and was only defeated after her ammo was spent and her armour was stripped off through fighting and even then it required a tricksy manoeuver to take her down (in this case jump jets were used as a weapon and managed to get the cockpit). Can you imagine what a 'Mech/pilot combination that good would COST? I mean we're talking more than an Ares here.
Ditto Kai. He preferred lighter machines (he won against all the heirs to the Inner Sphere states but rejected the Daishi prize, which then went to third-placed Victor Steiner-Davion) so he'd be more affordable but he was reputedly the best pilot the Inner Sphere has ever seen, although many would have him as second-best because...
... there's Phelan, whom others argue was superior to Kai.
The issue for WK is if they make these pilots as good as their reputation then game balance is destroyed. If they rule them as unplayable in tournament play, then they upset people. So they made them balanced and tried to use the pilot abilities to make them more interesting. Why was that such a crime?
They could have picked minor characters, ones that people didn't have such high expectations of. Kind of like that Marauder IIC pilot that everybody wondered why they'd made her. You see they tried going down the scale and everyone said "Where's the Black Widow? Where's Kai?".
It was no-win from the start really so I can see why they threw the chips in but for me it's a shame because whilst I didn't like Phelan in a Solitaire with the name Ward, I still wanted to collect it. I mean it's Phelan! I don't play this game but I'll be getting my hands on the Black Widow and on Kai ... just because! I have NO reason to buy another 'Mech because I haven't played in over a year but I will get them. Those of you who are unhappy, I'll be more than happy to trade/buy your unwanted Solaris VII historicals off you!! ;)
Incidentally it's a crying shame that we never got Aidan Pryde in a Summoner. That's one 'Mech that's in production and looks right.

Your very correct it's the fun of collecting the historical pilots that makes it interesting ,stats are not, it's just a fun little nod to us fans. :)
although my thoughts on the subject are more along the lines sure make em and put a date on the base example Kai 3030 or Kai 3039 it should show differences.
And I still maintain that Yorinaga Kurita would kick butt all over the place.
And i agree with kotch an argument can be fun interesting etc.
When you put it that way, it makes a lot of sense.
The problem is that a lot of Mechwarrior players tend to be very shortsighted about the game (and it's true of many hobby games, and often the world at large). They look at a figure and decide that if it's not something they want, and maybe their close circle of friends want, then it's no good.
There are a lot of different reasons people like the game and WizKids wants to give them all something. As I said in another thread, the reason the figures aren't too powerful is because of the segment of the market that hates it when a "dead" character appears in a game. Another segment wants to collect these figures. They found a way to satisfy both groups, but now another group is weighing in that expects something else.
Every historical unit out so far has had a ton of negative reviews. I can't remember one of them coming out and having everybody say what a great unit that made the game better for its presence.
.
I think I was wrong about this one. There is a historical unit that is pretty good. The comstar Marauder and pilot. That is a good combo.
But then again how many people would know who she is without WK telling them about her on her card?

You should also point out that WK is sometimes shortsighted themselves. Which makes for a bad combination alot of different points of view all combining at a thought of what "I" want. It makes alot of people feel that the other person that has a different POV is going out of their way to ignore what they want and how they feel.
I think in many ways WK could have won over the ones who don't like "dead" characters in the game by making them closer to what they should be instead of the kinda below average that they got. Because I am sure it is infuriating to have "dead" characters come into the game and not even be good enough to play. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth if a piece you never wanted to appear in the game is a prize you win and it is not good enough to play at all.
I honestly think people would have loved these figures a great deal had they been representative of their actual history. Who wouldn't have wanted to play Phelan had he had the stats that Kelly does, or a Kai as good? There are allready mechs that can have a 13 AV and 24 DV as assualts and heavy and light. Would it have been that bad to have some more recognizable characters doing the same?
But anyway I will not miss the historicals too much so long as we still get mechwarrior units. I enjoy the game for the gameplay. Not for the CBT pilots in MW form.

Anybody who cared enough about the fiction to read Twilight of the Clans.

This is a hard one. For Natasha Kerensky or Kai Allard-Liao to rock as much as they should then they would have been so uber it wouldn't have been funny. Incidentally, Kai also went through a period where he lacked confidence and tried to hurt rather than kill his opponent so why shouldn't he be in one of those phases? And considering he is being forced by his cousin to fight for him when he doesn't want to, maybe his heart's not in it. If you read the jihad, Kai is a shadow of his former self, a puppet used by both Sun Tzu and Hasek (I'll admit I could be out of date on this one 'cause I'm out of the loop too).
But then if you haven't even read Twilight of the Clans maybe you've not read any of the Jihad stuff?
As for making them uber, that's not good either. Unless you make them illegal in tournament play, in which case why bother? It's a fine line and there is no way to satisfy everybody because you have all classes of fan here.
And basically every list including Natasha Kerensky, Phelan Kell and Kai Allard-Liao would get dull very fast.
