Well to be perfectly honest, this relpy isn't about this thread although I think it is great. I am just writing here because I know that I will get feedback.
Here's the deal, I was playing a brotherhood deck except for my 8 drop was Doomsday. All brotherhood except for Doomsday. Doomsday has loyalty. My friend exclaimed that I could not play him because I had no other Revenge Squad characters. I thought that I could play him, so we looked at the rules.
On the Upperdeck website offcial rules list, it defined "loyalty" this way: "Loyalty is a key word that represents a continuous power that functions in the hand zone. The phrase "Loyalty" means "Recruit this card only if you control a character that shares at least one team affiliation with this card."
So it was clear that in order to play Doomsday I had to "control" another Revenge Squad character. So then I looked up the definition of "control" and it said this: A player controls all cards he or she owns and all objects in his or her zones. (Notice the "s" at the end of zones) Effects may override this, causing a player to control objects he or she does not own. An object moving from a zone controlled by a player other than its owner will always move to the designated zone of its owner."
So since control talked about your objects being in any of the specified "zones" I looked up the "hand zone" as mentioned in the definition of loyalty.
It read:
212.3 Hand Zone
2. 212.3a The hand zone represents cards in a player's hand. Each player has a hand zone.
212.3b The hand zone is not public information, but a player may look at the cards in his or her hand zone at any time. The number of cards in a player's hand is public information.
So as the rules state, I can play Doomsday in my Brotherhood deck as long as I have another Revenge Squad character in my hand such as "Eradicator". (Since I also "control" that character)
I never have to place that character (Eradicator) inside of the "in-play zone" as it is already in a zone and under my control.
There appears to be five different zones and if you control a specific character in any of those zones, a different character with the same affiliation (Even those who have Loyalty) can be played.
Anyways, I just wanted to see what you guys think about this and to see if you understand my case. Thanks for responding. And I hope this helps.
There is a distinction between "character cards" and "characters". As per the official rule:
301.4 The character card represents the recruit effect on the chain. When the recruit effect resolves, the character card is put into the player's front or support row. It then becomes an object with the character type.
Only upon successful recruitment does a character card become a character.
Based on your above stated definition on loyalty, character (not character cards) must share at least one team affiliation.
That means no Micah, you can't use Doomsday unless you re-work your deck's team affiliations. :)
(He pulled Doomsday out before I could drop my Onslaught. Bugger. :P)
BTW, Great thread here Omni. Absoloutly love it. You are right about players using X-Men just because they love the charachters, but I would still like to find some good tech-ups or team-ups to bolster thier strength. Any suggestions?
I am determined to find a way! I ordered Marvel teamup and I am hoping that if I change a 1 or 2 drop to a revenge squad character then I can get both team affiliations. Even if RS is DC the team card says nothing about the team affiliations having to be marvel, so it will work out the same way. I will still have Doomsday before u get Onslaught. Oh and by the way, until then I will just use my Apocalipse and you still wont get Onslaught!
Hi Omnicresence,
Thanks alot! This thread is awesome. I've learned more about VS system in a flash. I've been so changed by this experience that I want to adapt this idea to Magic: The Gathering. I hope you don't mind if I use almost the same style as you (You're format is just so simple to use and easy to understand!).
hey omni! where you at, man? have not seen you on the site in a while, it looks like you have alot fans, hopefully you can finish up the rest of the teams, before else continue's your work.
