I would be very surprised if top players had spoilers well prior to release of sets these days. I know that various high level rules people will have seen the set well prior to release (in order to make sure that the rules are all ironed out prior to release), and that various websites that are doing spoiler articles will have access, but I don't think that it is healthy for the game (any game) to start throwing around unsubstantiated rumours.
In the past it was the case that Magic players doing previews got to see the entire set early, but now they will only get to see the card that they are previewing in an effort to keep down spoilage.
I agree with the various people on this thread that think that your examples of 'sleeper' cards are pretty awful. I know for a fact that in England ravager was very definitely very hot property at the prerelease, and any earlier than that is entirely irrelevant. I don't really consider anything to be a sleeper in an environment where it hasn't yet been played in a major tournament - there may well be many many players who are aware of how good a card is but aren't particularly letting on, because it isn't profitable for them to do so.
Necropotence was a sleeper. Mirari's Wake was a sleeper.
Stop with the pro-bashing. If its true that there are bad leaks going on the only people that can deal with it are UDE themselves, and if there aren't then all you are doing is causing bad feeling. There is no profit in your scaremongering.
just to prove what i said wasnt just a rumor just read the interview with yip =/.
wtf would i gain if i was trying to "scaremonger"?
and how are my examples of sleeper cards "awful" when the only 1 ppl disagree with is ravager =/. LETS SEEEEE
it really is sad when people refuse to believe some1 when what they are talking about isnt exactly "good news". and i wasnt "pro bashing" if anything i am "perlas and yip" bashing. i mean it would be understandable if i was some nobody who just came on this board to bash "pros" but that is not the case.just so you know the person who told me all this was a friend that lives in cali and goes to yips card shop and is a really good friend of his and now he is being gay and ignoring me because i partial spoiled 1 card. theres also a not so fast that draws a card... so if im right.. will you guys even partial believe me? i mean if they are wrong then sure you can judge me as a "scaremonger" but i highly doubt they will be considering how the person who gave me the spoilers is acting.
and here is my proof that ravager could easily be considered a sleeper card. also the fact that you could buy them online for 3 dollars for the LONGEST time.
i would be happy to find more posts which at least 1 of them had top 5-10 lists and ravager wasnt even near #1 or even on the list for that matter.
but it just saddens me that some people kiss so much ass and REFUSE to believe some things if they have to do with a "pro" or well recognized people.
for all of you people dont let any1 tell you mark mcguire used steroids... or r kelly is a pedaphile... or michael jackson loves little boys. oh ya and every1 is beautiful.
It would be nice if there was anything that could back up what you are saying. I mean, why don't you give names or specific cards, events, etc to back up your claim. If not, then you come off as a whiner and complainer. I personally would like to know so I know which "group" has this advanced information.
i'd say the 2 cards i've already mentioned in this thread should be enough. i say all we have to do is wait. there is always the chance that the person who gave me spoilers (who i am real good friends with or at least WAS =}) could just be lying his ass off and put up the biggest front ever.
If we define a sleeper card as any card that the average joe in the street cannot immediately spot is good then we suddenly have a much wider definition. I don't especially frequent open forums expecting to find incredible insight into games and broken cards. The thread you referenced featured various characters that admit to being more casual players. All I can speak from is experience. Before Darksteel was officially released we had Ravager Affinity built (with Aether Vials, Workers, Skullclamp etc). I suppose it is possible that England is vastly ahead of the rest of the world, but as much as I would like to believe that is true, I really don't think so.
As far as people having access to spoilers is concerned, we will see how accurate everything is, please don't feel that I was knocking the truth of what you were saying, more pointing out that I don't think that there is anything constructive about the way you have gone about it. Your generalisations only served to place general impressions in people's heads about 'pros' which I don't feel are reflective of such a large group. It wasn't a million miles off suggesting that 'all pros are cheats' in terms of what will be taken away by the casual reader. This isn't good for the game.
"and now he is being gay and ignoring me because i partial spoiled 1 card."
what is THE most important rule of VS?
Don't be a dick.
those two statements show that you violated this rule...
we are a community Fry, when you disrespect one of us you disrespect ALL of us. This isn't even if you have correct info this is about the way you used it. You have violated at least ONE persons trust and now you are trying to drag peoples names into it. All the while I never see YOUR name anywhere...
If you were smart you would just let this thread fade into obscurity.

Just because someone spoiled 2 cards doesn't mean everyone on the West Coast knows the whole MOS set (which you keep saying).
What you are implying and what is the truth is different.
And... knowing 2 cards (or even the whole set) a week before everyone else is not even close to an advantage.
i didnt say every1 on west coast knows, i specificially said every on west coast SHOULD know more or less ina sarcastic way. if you are important or good friends with them you should at least be aknowledged that there is a spoiler. and why do you say a week? jesus christ. when i 1st posted this it was more then a week. and i ensure you its been out longer then when i posted :/.

People in this game work the same as they do in other games ;( They don't believe you now, they won't say anything when it turns out you're right, and then when you say stuff about next set/other cards they won't believe you again, acting as if you weren't right the first time.
*edit*
Ravager is the perfect example of a sleeper card =/ A site I buy singles from was selling them for like $4 for a couple weeks after release and a week later they were buying them for $7 and pricing them at like $17. I'd say that qualifies.
The real question is why I have a bookmark for a site for a game that I have played many times and own numerous cards for.
