Um, this was modern. Savage Beatdown is not a modern legal card ;) And I'm playing 32 characters, so dropping 2 would've resulted in 30 characters, which isn't enough, especially with no tutor.
Another thing, I wanted to play 4 Mattie Franklin instead of Iceman, because his effect never went off, and Mattie is a much better 6 for modern age. However, I forget my copies of her, so I had to play Iceman instead.
I wish they wouldn't just throw marvel modern out the window. It kinda sucks that I made MMA decks but won't be able to play them in 4 weeks. They should have 3 formats: DC Modern, Marvel Modern, and Generic Golden, which they rotate in and out of every other week or something.
That could be an interesting idea, a way to keep playing these formats again and again without going without each of them for 3-9 months. And then having each time Modern Marvel and DC come into style, half of the original teams in the Age are gone.
The problem decks for this are Syndicate Rush and Honor Among Theives it seems. Because everything else is either X-statix or curve, and Spidey 7 shuts curve down on turn 7 and 8, and X-Statix can be dealt with without TOO much trouble. But I don't know how to improve the early game with this deck. They just have too many pumps and stuff. And for some reason I can't draw my sticky situations this early. Anybody have the same problems? Can anyone solve this problem?
That's not really what I mean. Because early on, you don't have the pumps SS or HAT does to get enough breakthrough to make AR really do much. I mean is there a way (besides Cardiac, who I just thought of) to stop the swarm of those two decks?
Whenever I come up against HAT or SS rush (or even TNB), what I aim to do during the early turns is get stun backs as much as I can, which is why I use No Fears instead of CAPs (to ensure stun back when they attack down the curve, as attacking up the curve usually results in double stun anyway), this way they won't gain board advantage... Endurance-wise, the early game will go to the opponent but their weenies won't usually stand a chance against your bigger drops...
Pleasant Distraction really works well for SF, I'm amazed you didn't run any in your deck...
I like the idea of using No Fear, because most of the time you attack with CAP its attacking up the curve, so it does essentially the same thing. I couldn't find room for Pleasant Distraction, but now that I think about it PD may be better then Sticky Situation. I don't know. I'll have to try those 2 cards out.
I played 4 games yesterday, 2 against a Marvel Knights/Underworld deck (man that 5 drop Blade! CC I now know what you're talking about) and 2 against a Spider-Friends deck... In most of those 4 games, Daily Bugle was a big help (I just have one Latverian Embassy and I'm using the Bugles in their placE), especially during the last game when my SF opponent played a Latverian Embassy...
Against Knights/Underworld, my Sticky Situations played a big role against his attack pumps, and would've been handy if I had one when my opponent played Strength From the Grave (I think his 5 drop reached 19 atk because of it)...
Against SF, I had an easy time during the first game when I hit my curve, but the 2nd game was difficult (my opponent had the upper hand quite early, I was down to 13 endurance to his 32 by the 5th turn) and I had to discard my only 8 drop Spidey to exhaust his... it was a great matchup, with me winning 3 end to 0 and I credit Daily Bugle and Pleasant Distraction for helping me stall long enough for Ezekiel and 7 drop Spidey to hit the board...
spid3rm4n: Was Spider-Tracer much use to you during your games? I'm not having much success with it...
Spider-Tracer is one of those cards that if played at the right time turns the game, and if played at the wrong time is a dead card. It's always really hard to decide who to trace. Against rush, I always target their biggest guy. Against other decks, it's hard because you don't want to target their smallest guy because he probably won't be around next turn, and their biggest guy might not need attack or defense pumps. But what I usually do is trace their 5 or 6 so on turn 7 I can attack down the curve without getting stunned and then attack back up with some pumps.
However, I don't know if I'm going to play a full set anymore. These are some changes I think I've decided on:
-4 CAP
-2 Tracer
-2 Sticky Situation
+2 Pleasant Distraction
+4 No Fear
+2 something
I've tried Daily Bugle before, but it's just not my style because it makes you think to hard about how you're going to attack. Like there's always the decision of hitting down the curve so you can flip something down and hitting back up, but what happens if you get stunned back? Or you don't stun? And what if they hide someone in the back against a very flight-lacking deck? But then again, Tracer and Bugle would combo nicely, as you would always ensure a stun of whoever you target with bugle. Hmm....
spid3rm4n: I use Daily Bugle on defense... Whenever an character attacks and I know I can stun him back, I flip Daily Bugle, name that character, and flip a Spider Senses or a No Fear or something and end up facing that plot twist down once I get my stun back :p I rarely use Daily Bugle when attacking, since it can be hard to guarantee a stun...
Just when I tailored my SF deck to MMA, the next PCQ at the end of this month near me is back to GA. I'm wondering if any of the modern mods discussed here can be brought over to GA.
For example, is Cardiac now worth running in Evasion SF just to tech against Hounds? I'm thinking of cutting back some of my 2-drops to run a couple of copies of him just for anti-Hounds, EMS, FFF tech. If I don't need him, he heads to the resource row for Mattie fuel.
Cardiac is a great metagame choice for both Golden and Modern right now. EMS has lots of small guys he can stun, so does FF, provided they dont have ACNV. Also, he can stun hounds, and plenty of Titans characters.
