pint, rehashing themes is different than rehashing mechanics. rehashed themes make for very little diversity in the metagame(like the current rush enviornment). while rehased mechanics(where appropriate) help to increase flow and familiarity from one set to the next, giving the entire game continuity. as well, as familiarizing players with newer mechanics. the example i keep coming back to is that of willpower and constructs in the MAV set. sure, it does not really belong in that set, but its there. just to remind players of it. it did not need to dominate the set, in order to be in it. a few DA characters or ALLY effects in MXM would have been good thing.
Can't argue with your view even though I have different reasoning. I always think of sealed pack flow and I get frustrated with 'legacy' content. I can however easily see what you mean with ally not really being 'Legacy' content. I am just having a hard time seeing the use of a Ally character in a set with little non-natural powerups. I think we have Storm, Decosta and the Freedom Force as the only assists.
Anyway nice point. The day is yours! I'm the #### of the walk!
In the case of Sabretooth, why WOULDN'T he be a reservist? When was Sabretooth a main character of the Brotherhood? In the movie? He was thrown in by Mystique for a brif amount of time, and then was hired out by Exodus during the Chuck Austen run - both times as a hired gun or mercenary and not a true 'member' - he's probably been on the B-Hood for fewer issues than just about anyone save, perhaps, Mammomax. He's more of a Marauder than a Brotherhood member and about as perfect a candidate for Reservist as we'll ever see - unless they make a keyword called 'merc' or 'mercenary'...
i do think they've gone too far on reservist. if you want to be technical there would be VERY few ppl in comic universe that wouldnt be reservist. ppl leave and come back all the time from what im aware. :/
also im surprised they havnt came up for a stupid reason for batman to be reservist on GK cus he prefers to work by himself or something -_-.
i mean if you THINK about it if some1 is a reservist for 1 team and they are also on another team, shouldnt they be reservist on that team too no matter how long they've been there? i mean it makes just as much sense to put reservist on xmen storm as it does for morlock storm :/
I still think that they should have had some dua affiliations.....
some examples, storm on the morlocks and x-men, magneto (6) be on the b-hood and HC, and so on and so forth.
But it is still ab awesome set. I mean, look at all of the deck-tyoes we get out of it!
B-hood reserist
B-hood 3 or more breakthrough
x-men recovery (more elaborate now)
x-men generl beats
morlocks big beats
morlocks evasion
HC hidden/stand-alone
And that's just the teams. then we have the traits.
All in all, X-men offerd us a lot of new options to put to the test. It did what we want most sets to do, that is challenge us with new possibilities and explore new ideas. well, in my opinion at least.
1. Bad artwork. Overall it's the worst looking set yet, I know they are focusing a lot on the upcoming WoW game and such but it may have been at the expense of the x-art. Spiderman and GL had some bad art but mxm is worse.
2. Recycled themes. This is rather obvious.
3. Lack of Dual team and Ally. Really would have been nice to include them.
- where are the good legacy cards for Underworld and Crime Lords ?
- couldn't we at least get a soft-search for mutants ?
3 Positives
1. Mutant and Traits. The jury is still out on this, but I like traits though they seem to be more involved in merely making things cost-prohibitive at this stage... in the future they could become very interesting. Too bad they didn't have this from the beginning.
2. Off team upgrades. Enemy of my enemy being the most obvious, but there are many cards here that allow people to be creative in adding off team stuff to their decks.
3. Classic team retrofits. They did a good job of adding to old teams while keeping them balanced and making room for new directions.
- playability of locations has improved.
- crossover reduces eye strain.
I don't see where they recycle themes? Avengers is built around the "bank reservist idea, as Brotherhood is about cycling through your no longer needed reservist resources as fast a possible.
On a nother note with the same subject you say that you wouldnt want them to "recycle" themes but you wanted X-men to have alley ?
MXM has so much potential.
as for the card art. heh, your right, there are some pretty ugly cards but there are also some very nice looking ones. give a little endure a little i suppose.
1) anyone who thinks this is the worst art for a set obviously came in long after MOR...as well, I will again point out just a few of the more than stellar pics - Phoenix Rising, Mutant Massacre, Gambit, Cyclops, Angel Dust, Shaw, the two Queens, Shinobi, Roberto, Psionic Storm, Patch.
There are a few cards that are really ugly, but the vast majority are above average, and those that stand out are among the best this game has ever produced. I'm really proud of the art in this set. JLA spoilt us, but this set definitely holds up.
2) Gone too far on Reservist? I actually think they've chosen very intelligently - the only teams that are heavy on Reservist are teams that are literally heavy on Reservists - Avengers, the team that literally created the term (There was always a team of 6-8 and a huge number of reserve members) and Acolytes who were essentially a massive reserve Brotherhood. JLA and JLI have a few more than normal due to the huge level of roster changes and backup members, and Squadron due to the splitting of the team has a few as well. The rest of the teams only have only a few of Reservist members altogether, if any at all...
3) Stop complaining about the lack of Dual team affiliations in the MXM set. Mike Hummel VERY clearly explained that it was due to a print template issue due to the traits, which has since been fixed but too late for that set.
Most people have bashed Metagamer for his negativity, and they have a point. But, in the midst of his rant, he did make a couple of very good points.

5. MXM fails in sealed play(and presumably draft as well?).
He's wrong about draft (which, while perhaps a bit techy, is perfectly fine), but MXM sealed play is just the least fun I've ever have playing sealed in VS, ever, and I love playing sealed. MXM's trait madness means on average you have fewer playable cards in your packs, which means your sealed decks become more combotastic - which means the luck factor in sealed is increased. I accept that luck is going to be a factor in sealed, sure. But there's luck being a factor, and then there's luck being far more dominant than it should.

4. Recycled mechanic. Mutant trait is nothing more than willpower for Marvel Characters.
He's right about this, too. Everyone blathering about how Mutant has traits and is outside the box and blah blah blah whatever seem to miss the point: Mutant is simply another keyword reference trait for other cards to recognize. Like Willpower, Leader, and Ally, it does nothing by itself, and I really, really hope that future sets don't try to introduce yet more frigging keyword-reference mechanics, because really, there's more than enough at this point. I would like to see, instead, keyword traits that actually do something by themselves, like Evasion or Reservist.
one thing that noone has said and that seldom people say is that one of the stong and interesting points of this set is the fact that instead of coming out with just 4 teams, they instead effectivly came out with 7. look at the teams and you'll see that each one - baring the x-men - has a team within a team with its own subtle manuevers, tactics, and themes. the morlocks have evasion and the they have there beaters / the brotherhood has reservists (acolyts) and then they have freedom force / and finally the best team out of the set IMHO the hellfire club has the inner circle (concealed) as well as the hellions
Psychic Struggle, Chill Out!, Momentary Distraction, Backs Against the Wall, Worthington Industries, Emma Frost: Friend or Foe, Phoenix Rising, Sabertooth, Shake, Rattle, and Roll, Power and Wealth, Good Samaritan...
Just a few cards that are definately good. You pack 4 of some of these in a deck suited toward what they were meant for (except maybe Worthington Industries)...
1. Bad artwork. Overall it's the worst looking set yet, I know they are focusing a lot on the upcoming WoW game and such but it may have been at the expense of the x-art. Spiderman and GL had some bad art but mxm is worse.
Teamwork and her two well-endowed friends would like to have a ... very suggestive talk with you.
Frank Cho alone makes this set's artwork >>>>> Jesus.
