'Tis all in jest Ozz. Relax, or Her Majesty will send the Beefeaters round and chuck you in the tower!

It was John Cabot (or Giovanni Caboto) who discovered the North American mainland. He was Genoese or Venetian and sailed from Bristol under an English flag.
I may be off on a few of the facts as I am dredging this up from quite a few years ago, and if so I apologise.
If you are looking for credit for discovering America after the original inhabitants made the passage across the Bering Strait (or possibly from Oceania into South America), and after the Vikings discovered it then I think it goes out fairly equally across Western Europe, but especially to the Italian city states.
Columbo is a fictional detective. :p
Actually, neither the Vikings nor John Cabot discovered the North America mainland either, at least not at first. They both landed in Newfoundland, an island off the east coast. I should know, it's where I'm from.

Good for you!
However, I didn't say that Cabot or the Vikings landed on the mainland, as there isn't a common consensus on the matter.
It is, however, generally accepted that John Cabot discovered North America, and there is some speculation as to exactly where he landed. His 1497 voyage reached North America a year before Columbus hit land on his third?? voyage in 1498.

In 1497 Cabot sailed from Bristol, England in the Matthew to what is now eastern Canada. Precisely where he landed is a matter of some controversy; the possibilities include Newfoundland, Cape Breton Island, Labrador and Nova Scotia.

The Vikings are believed to have explored various islands off the Canadian mainland as well as possibly venturing onto the mainland itself.
Vikings rock! and every one knows the answer to all questions is either a wizard did it, or quantum. since this question doesnt realate to sci fi i can only conclude that a wizard discovered America. and thats the end of that episode.
