Don't ban Quicksilver, just bar players with no soul.
Query - what if people turn up with a non-quickfate deck that uses the troublesome two-drop? He featured in some Inmates builds, but not in an abusive manner.
You know what? I'm going to ban every card I deem unfun. Sure, I might be an awful player who needs a WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAmbulence every time my gauntlet deck doesn't go off against quickfate, but hey, who's gonna stop me? UDE?
If UDE banned quicksilver, I'd be fine with it. I'm not saying quicksilver isn't abusive and can seem unfun.
If you did this at a Hobby League, I honestly wouldn't care. HL's are local and are made to have fun with the game, so if you wanna ban cards YOU and your friends deem unfun? Hey, it's your store
But this is an elite series. A sanctioned event where Pro Points are given out. This is an event held in only a few select locations which happens every 2-3 months, where people make a great effort to come to stores which hold them, in search of a morsel of competitive play.
And you have the gall to ruin it, because you and your buddies don't like it? Who the hell are you to dictate what is fair and what isn't what I should play and what I shouldn't?
If the TO allows this, I want him thrown out for pissing on everyone else's fun, because these guys think competitive play means "SUPA HOBBY LEAGUE!!!".
Garbage like this makes me want to quit the game and leave it to the kids with their damn four-square rules. Thanks for ruining what little some people have left to enjoy the game.
You are ALL wrong! Playing Quicksilver takes a tremendous amount of skill! You have to be a really good player to attack, add attack pumps and attack again.
Also there is no shame in taking 15 minutes of everyones time at PC Indy deciding if reading Quicksilver is the right play! You are obviously a "Quicksilver" player because it took you 15 minutes to decide that! Thank you for prolonging everyone's already long day! (You know who you are.)
I know Quicks is a touchy subject with a lot of people. I don't know if he should be banned or not, but if UDE bans him, I'm fine with that.
What I do know, however, is that this is a PCQ-level event that qualifies for the PC(you can argue whatever you want about that, but barring an announcement, this event IS giving out PC points). Any event of this level needs to be consistent. Having people qualify under different circumstances/restrictions isn't a good thing.
I appreciate the sentiment, and informing local players that it would not be appreciated to bring Quicksilver is fine, but the official ban list has to be used for any sanctioned event.
That being said... I am not against taking a sack of nickels to anyone that brings Quickfate. :)
I am a local atl player and from our regional posts, the intent for banning QS began with the Build a legend event. Since we have more freedom in the Marquee events, some stores are running it modern and others are doint it silver (sans QS).
My main concern with this post mentioning the banning of QS in the Elite Series, is that the store thats running the ES was not in the discussion of the QS ban. I may be out of the loop as far as this goes.
But just wanna put it out there that for the Build a Legend Event, QS is banned in Atlanta.
Granted, this doesnt have the resounding impact of an ES ban. But it may be genie may be out of the bottle already.
Sure people are going to be pissed if they show up with QuickFate and you don't let them play.
Sure people are going to be pissed if they play something metagamed against Quickfate.
The big issue is that, the players aren't going to 'take it up with UDE' and get something out of it. What they'll do is (potentially) affect your future sanctioned events. Let me ask this of you, is your non-approved banning of QuickFate worth losing your store's access to hobby kits? What about sanctioned events? What if you become a banned Judge or TO? Is the impact to your player group worth the potential outcome of this 'banning'?
I'm all for UDE banning Quicksilver. He's busted and abused. But the "Atlanta Ban" has all of the signs of a good idea gone bad. Cause I'll be honest, if I tested for the event, possibly purchased cards, took the day off from work, drove the hour+ to my local Elite Series, and then was told that my deck, contrary to UDE Tournament Sanctioned rules, was banned. I'd be friggin' pist! And I guaranty I'd push it to the extreme limits when reporting it to UDE.
We did something similar to this in Iowa a few months ago for the silver city champs. We did not "officially" ban quicksilver, but we all know each other and made a gentlemens' agreement not to play quickfate after sydney.
Yeah, as I stated I'm taking the responsibility, the stores let us run our own events, they really don't have input. They're just nice enough to order kits etc.
But it wouldn't be fair to NOT post here. We made the decision, we're planning on at least trying to enforce it (call it "not-so-subtle encouragement"), and we have had players drive up to see us from nearby locations before (we do have an active community, which seems to be a rarity now-a-days, and we had players come up from Florida etc). That was a big reason to post here.
I have to admit: if someone ABSOLUTLY refused everything we talked about, including our plan to pre-announce everything, offers to help them build another deck if they need, etc... I mean, we'd have to let it happen (sad but true). For all of our bravedo, someone can jerk their way in with Quicksilver. The best we could do as a player base is try to make their time doing this as non-fun as possible.
So as I said in my 2nd post, the word "Official" is actually a lie in the subject of this. But, we wanted to make people aware if they were travelling there was going to be a lot of discouragement of Quicksilver in our Silver Age marquee event, because we have players that refuse to play otherwise (and lord knows we don't want to happen to our community what seems to have happened elsewhere).
As to people protesting our local ban, it is what it is. If UDE was in any way communicating with the player base, if we felt that they were going to even look at this matter or comment on it, we may have been softer here and just ask the locals to please not do it. UDE is not, and people have to respect that we're at least trying to prevent attrition in our area as best we can (again, we would lose people if we didn't take this step). If this screws outsiders a little, eh, sorry, but we have to look out for Atlanta first.
This is amazing. It's like you're a Vs. Vigilante! Equipped with your ban hammer, you fight injustice when UDE refuses the call. You should ban Mojo next. He's rediculous.
You should just make your Elite Series into a Big Deck tournament, if you want it to be fun. If anyone shows up with an illegal deck, just hand them a few packs of whatever non-current set you have lying around.
well I guess I am screwed because I have a business meeting tomorrow in atl and was going to stick around for the es, but I guess I will not waste my time because I have tweeked my deck to play against quickfate and Doomed Earth builds so I guess good luck with the elite series.
this is EXACTLY what I was just talking about, Dave.
@ tarzan now, are you really going to let their decision prevent you from going? moloids will be there, and as said previously, they're able to be stronger than quicksilver in one form. I'm skeptical about the comment, tbh, but hey its been thrown out there.
If you have time for testing, maybe time trapper? he'd kick some stall rear.
I'm sure Dave and his crew are reasonable enough folks that they'll be able to handle a random that shows up with Quicksilver.dec. They might just let him play.
I think that in light of UDE's failure lately to address problems, the Atlanta players are doing what's right for them. Not to totally disrespect UDE's approach to bannings, which in the past has been conservative yet judicious, but look at PCLA 2006 (R.I.P.): UDE was going to let the broken combo shenanigans fly. Only the protest of the players on these boards convinced UDE to do the right thing and ban some cards. Only difference between this time and that time? Then, they let us know that they weren't going to make any bannings, only they did when they realized how pissed people were.
Now? No announcement, no bannings, no communication at all whatsoever.
I think that a group of players taking matters into their own hands is fair enough given the circumstances. At this point, they are making the game enjoyable for themselves, which is what really matters. If banning Quicksilver is what gets more players to show up to their Elite Series, then it sounds like they're doing the right thing.
Just remember... Quicksilver doesn't kill on turn 3... people kill on turn 3... or people kill other people for a living.
tarzan's post is an example of what could go wrong with this and hippie-rob re-inforced what I was saying... it sets a bad precedent.
But you've scaled it back to an "unofficial" banning... and I hope it works out. Good luck Dave (are you going to play now or are just involved in running it?).
