I play the game for the characters and the flavor. Although I love Runaways, I'm not a huge fan of the extended X-Verse, and that played a MAJOR role in deciding how much MEV I was going to buy. If future sets are centered around comic characters I simply don't care for (Top Cow characters or whoever) then I doubt I'll be purchasing much of those at all.
The VS. System game engine is incredibly versatile, and I have no doubt that other licenses could be used with this system to create successful card games. I just don't think I would play those games very much.
I would never have bought my first back if it were not for the inclusion of DC. Since the DC license got dropped, my interest in the game has waned. If the Marvel license gets dropped as well, there are very few licenses that would not cause my interest to drop further.
I might still play because now I love the game, but it's unlikely I'd stay as committed to the game.
My #1 pick outside of DC and Marvel would be Buffy. But even the Buffy Universe isn't as deep with source material as DC and Marvel. It'd be good for a set or two, but that's about it.
If you are interested and have experience in any of the following categories:
1. Game engine design
2. Graphic art (stu?)
3. Comic book history
4. Manufacturing/packaging
5. Marketing (yeah... kariggi... I'll talk to you about this in person)
... please email me at the SoCal VS website in my sig. But only if you are serious and can spend the time and money.
Why money? Well... that's when the talk becomes the walk... but not a single dollar will be collected unless all parties involved have agreed to a gameplan. This is no "donate before you know what's happening" endeavor... this is a serious plan of action that requires a few dedicated people. I have my doubts... but maybe talking to some like-minded individuals will make it more feasible.
Buffy definitely has enough material for a set between eight seasons on TV and the ongoing storyline in the comic book. Angel brings in five TV seasons on the ongoing book storyline.
so are we saying that we think VS has'nt turned a corner towards profitablity or no?
Yes, some HL are failing, but that may be because the owners are'nt organized enough - no plan of action = lack of sales from tcg/mini based games.
Alot of mistakes were made, but that's the past. Our game has seen it's worst days in my opinion: the time for it to fail would have been earlier in it's brief existence. We can't possible believe that VS is a weak as some of the failed games that have been mentioned in comparison...
VS has gone through it's infancy period and it's definitely had it's share of mistakes and blunders; Nevertheless, that was then... all the structures for success seemed to have weathered the storm and I'm of the oppinion that an introduction of new IP's and interactive marketing strategies from both UDE/IP owners will = a resurgence of the VS game scene on a national level.
I didn't know anyone. No idea who the Fan4 were, who Doom was. I knew the X-men, and heard Spider-Man was on the way.
That got me into the game.
If it were stick figures or vampires/werewolves, pacman vs the ghosts or something and had the exact same mechanics, I wouldn't have picked up the game.
I'd assume the same would be true if there wasn't something I wanted to buy from the next set: I didn't buy any of DGL (only 25 packs, 1 due to lack of stock and 1 box for the BotB), 1 box of DWF, 2 boxes of DCR. Compare that to 7 boxes of MTU and 10 boxes of MUN, yeah. My purchases were flavor-driven. That said some of the DC content interested me. The Avengers set was great, but I was only looking for Parkers for the same reason =/
I can't think of properties outside Marvel/DC I would buy for other than Heroes, personally. Maybe some of the anime stuff, depending on what the show is. DBZ would be cool. idk.
[quote=lebeau;965381]On the other hand, I hear DC worked with Upper Deck more. They provided info on Infinite Crisis before it was published. And, by the way, UDE paid them back by putting out the set before the last issue of Infinite Crisis shipped. And the set contained spoilers including the identity of the new Flash. Up until then, this was a big secret in the DCU. And it was reveled in Vs, not the comics. I hear DC was steamed.QUOTE]
I could be wrong, but I seem to remember Issue 7 coming out before the set did, I remember the comic wheting my appitite for the new set.
This really isnt the point, but Now you have me curious.
It's been a while, so my memory could be hazy. But I distinctly remember two things.
I read Inifinite Crisis 7 the day it was released. But when I opened my Vs. packs for the Infinite Crisis set, I was surprised to see Bart as the Flash. I remember thinking, "They really let that cat out of the bag!"
Also, I remember reading on one of those comic book gossip sites that DC was none too happy about it. This isn't a site that follows Vs. I think they referred to it as "some card game". If I were going to hazard a guess, I'd say I'm remembering a Lying In the Gutters column, but I wouldn't swear to it.
Again, my memory could be faulty. But I believe I had my DCR cards about a week before IC 7. I'm sure there were people for whom the opposite was true.
