I wish I could understand the absolute hate for Nightcrawler, when Metron is a figure that is ridiculously better for the points. I've never seen anyone complain and moan about Metron, but Nightcrawler had people wanting Ben burned at the stake for it. Crazy considering he's as overrated as smart players advertised.
Well yeah, but Metron isnt a stinking mutie, is he?
It is almost upon us! Are you prepared for the Quarmageddon?
2.) Others complain about the game dynamic change this figure brings. He ignores other figures and terrain on movement. Plus he can move opposing figures. One or the other would be good, but together they are ridiculously great. He can't be tied up easily, which leaves opponents who are used to dealing with traditional tabletop war gaming at a complete loss on how to deal with him.
Which is why we may see some people trying to use the upcoming Cobra soon. His special power is going to be great for at least slowing him down.
Hello Clixers,
Origins was great. I met so many neat people that were fantasic sports and a blast to play against.
I'm going to write up a brief summary of my experience in the grinders and in the finals. But I'll save more specific information about strategy and theorycrafting until I get the interview from Wizkids.
First, big props out to my crew... the Negative Play Experience gaming club from Lewisburg, PA. We play at Yukon Cards and Comics. Our events are primarily just for kicks where our crew of about ten players almost never even enforces a build if someone gets it wrong. But these guys laid the foundation that put my team through the ranks. Todd Russell, Ultimate Archer and a bunch of other guys play tested with me till our finger tips bled. Big Ol' Poppa Bear handled logistics for the trip. And the whole group gives off a great supportive vibe. PrettyBoy and his boy were a hoot to hang out with and a great chill factor while I was freaking out.
Heads up. I won't be using names in the descriptions below in case someone wants anonymity. But if you'd like to own up and chime in, please do so.
Grinders
My grinder experience was pretty vanilla. I preregistered for the 10:00am on Thur-Sat.
I lost the Thursday in the second round to a very well played HSS team. He crit failed TWICE... OFF HSS both times! But he still played through and ended up barely knocking me out with a last click Barry Allen.
I won Friday morning's grinder after Poppa Bear "fixed the clock" and we showed up 2 minutes before it started (that's a story for another time). Anyway, I used Trinity Superman, Osiris and Animal Man to win this Grinder. My final round was against my NPE buddy Todd. His Ganthet rolled a Crit Miss, then FOUR 3s in a row. I told him it didn't feel like I was playing Clix, but just doing 20 damage to win :-/
Finals
The night before finals I decided to play KidTron,
Metron
Kid Zoom
Nurse
Crimson Gem of Cyttorak
Like I said, I'll spare the theorycrafting until after the Wizkids interview.
I won map. I chose Krakoa. Poor guy didn't know it was legal :-/
As you can guess, this match went pretty quickly on the island. My KZ got the Gem. The map went off about 3 times before we even started trading blows. KZ knocked out Batman. Storm got off a shot or 2 needing high rolls to hit. She never connected. Metron based her. The island went off a few more times. Clean up. My nurse perished in the quakes.
This player was a great sport. I felt badly about him not planning on Krakoa.

-Round 2
My opponent played a Martial Artist theme,
Nightcrawler - 86
Iron Fist - 70
Robin - 66
Howard the Duck - 35
Diana Prince - 43
Mjolnir or Gem
Black/Yellow Lantern?
He won map. Chose the prison.
This team had apparently just trounced a team exactly like mine. Looking at the board though, I realized that with his only move and attack option gone, and no Outwit, as long as I played a conservative tempo, Metron could always flee to safety with KZ. KZ got the gem. The game quickly just turned into Metron moving KZ around, letting him tag a piece for 3-5 damage and then retreat. The guy tolerated it admirably. If there ever was a "hard counter" for his team, he was facing it. He stayed holed up in his prep cell, and eventually just called it after KZ knocked out a few pieces.

-Round 3
My opponent played a Martial Artist theme,
Nightcrawler - 86
Gamora - 73
Mask Killer - 60
Diana Prince - 43
Howard the Duck - 35
Mjolnir
Black Lantern
He won map roll. Chose the Prison.
I should have lost this. Made my stupidest mistake of the tournament. I let Mask Killer outwit STOP! and he pushed his NC to drag Metron to Gamora to get clawed up for 3 damage. Metron slinked back to the Nurse to get healed for 2. KZ missed an attack roll on Gamora. He KO'd my Nurse and I tagged Mask Killer for 3. He started running. I really thought the game was his. He had 2 Perplexes left. Diana Prince had Mjolnir and was covering the middle lane. Gamora was full health and was covering the left lane. Metron was only moving 10/8 with a carry. But I gave chase knowing that a push from NC would make him lose carry. No stalling, nothing tricky, my opponent was trying to win, but he was a good sport and a straight shooter. Eventually, I tracked him down and risked a shot on Mask Killer that allowed Gamora a shot on KZ. I got Mask Killer, Gamora rolled a 3 to hit KZ. Her being tapped out let me push KZ for a shot on NC hitting him for 2 with knock back into the wall. Now it was my turn to run. And I did until time was called. My opponent was a phenominal player. If he reads this and wants to contact me, I'd love to chew the fat about Worlds.

- Final Round
My opponent played a Thunderbolts theme,
Bullseye - 117
HoT Venom - 73
Moonstone - 76
T-bolts ATA - 24
Crimson Gem of Cyttorak
Yellow Lantern
He won map roll. Chose The Bridge.
This was my nightmare team. The Bridge :-/ Mystics :-/ No HSS :-/ Lots of pentetrating damage options :-/ Long range :-/
I went all in. After quick attacks from KZ and Beye, I went limping back to the Nurse to heal up KZ with Venom hot on our heels. KZ got to use his Incap/HSS ability to good measure, preventing a push from Moonstone. Then he died to Beye. Metron carried up the Nurse as a meat shield. Beye KO'd her too to push to his PB click. Venom jumped back into the fray. By turn 5, KZ was gone, my Nurse was gone and my opponent's entire team of Mystics had me surrounded. The only thing going for me, was that my opponent had used both his theme PCs by then. I started a' Pulse Waving. Really, the dice decided the game. My first PW did knock back to everyone. My second was a Critical Miss turned Critical Hit, KO'ing Moonstone. My 3rd had only Venom in range, he took all 4 and bowed out. Beye rolled a few PB hits, I made him reroll to misses, except once. Then Metron based him, used outwit and perplex to shut him down. Truthfully, I did forget to roll Mobius chair for the Critical hit Pulse Wave. :-( But I offered to go back and roll it on my opponent's turn. Both he and the judge said it was too late. :-( Even if I had failed it, I would have been on Metron's 18 defense with Super Senses click, that would have been even worse than 17 defense with Imperv for a Beye with PB. But I did forget. And I regret it.

Wizkids was great with prize support. They gave me a factory set of GSX, all 3 convention Horsemen, Wonder Woman, Dr. Manhattan, an entire set of print and play, and some lose GSX product. The whole staff was fantastic.
Right now I'm planning on GenCon. So I hope to see a lot of you there.
Btw, nobody is allowed to give Mike grief about not playing AEs. We were there to win. And truthfully, the Strange, JB x2, Sargon team he pulled together worried me. I'm happy he pulled off a win with it.
wait round 3 you ran until time ran out???!!!!

Maps... IMO, this is how maps may have effected my games...
- Round 1, Krakoa
Obviously, I would have had more of a fight on my hands if 4 of the pieces on his team didn't take 3 clicks from the island. So, yes, big deal here.
Agreed.

With Phasing I'd think you could arrive and leave with impunity. Your opponent had 0 move and attack pieces (due to Zoom). Trying to move them through the bottleneck would be long and arduous. Only Bencrawler could travel around - of course carrying someone - which would just open them up for Pulse-Wave.
A different map would have allowed some positioning on their part - moving people into different areas, no? You said you would fly Metron in, Zoom would attack, and then Metron would phase away. In the prison the team would have to go all the way around to get to the center hallway to get at you. Blowing up walls would take 5+ turns.
To me that seems poor map choice hurt that team making the battle even more uphill than it was from the start.

I think without all the walls and the bottleneck the Outwit could have been freed up to position better. I don't see how a tactical retreat is aided by walls when you face a Phasing figure.
Once you started running it would be impossible to catch - especially on the Prison Map where you have to move 15 spaces to go around a corner.

Right. Map choice had an effect. If he chose the Prison, for example, his team would have likely not made it a close game at all (assuming all rolls were the same). He chose a map that gave him a better chance of winning.
I'm not saying the map will win or lose a game for anyone. What I am saying is the Prison was a poor map choice for a killbox team that had a neutered Bencrawler.
Considering how many Kid Zooms and Bullseyes + Thunderbolts, its pretty clear to me Bencrawler made his presence in HeroClix felt. Those are best counter-builds for him. Its especially impressive since the Shield Disruptor SO was taken away.
Next Con it will be interesting to see what shows up. Metron is a definite but who will be his sidekick?
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
not for me...but everyone is different. win or lose..i refuse to run in clix or real life. people at my venue can back me up on that. and do not consider that a valid strategy

Yep. In a timed event, if you are up on points at the end, there's no reason to stay and let them try to kill you or one of your pieces. To do that would be poor strategy on your part and could easily result in a loss.
It's like Michael Jordan going to the YMCA to play basketball.

rather take the loss than run lol

Then, you, sir, are to be commended. And I will gladly take that trophy from you and all the prizing. That being said, I also do not like to run. I may do it some time (depending on the prize, etc...haven't yet, though), but I will NEVER stall.
edit: It will continue to be a valid strategy as long as you are only required to have more points than your opponent. And in a timed event, that is about all you can require.

Stalling is taking an excessively long time to make a move or take your actions. Running (i.e. staying out of your opponent's range.) is still a strategy. At least I am doing something, not just holing up behind barriers. For years, this game was dominated by a SIF strategy that relied SOLELY on stalling and hiding. I doubt I would have enjoyed that, but for the top prizes, I might have played it. At some events, some people leave fun at the door, or only have fun if they are winning.
