Something I don't understand is the part about not buying from online stores. They have to buy the cards so whats the problem? Is UDE charging hobby shops more than online retailers? I know it costs my hobby shop the same amout of money to buy a box that I can buy online. They can't make a profit this way.

No, it's to show local stores that you support them, and that you want to play there. Once you do that, they'll be more eager to run Hobby League and City Championships. What's the point of a store running Hobby League if they don't make any money off of it?
Rewrote this a couple times so as to offend people less.. But I gotta agree with En-Kur. (Does that make me a bad person?)
Vs. is a niche game. It's complex on various levels, and has a long start-up time. Casual players don't like spending 2 weeks designing a deck that then needs 2 months more tweaking time. Lazy players don't like figuring out why they lose all the time and learning to become better players.
On the other hand, players like me wouldn't play any other game. Nothing thrills me more than pulling off a complex interaction and having my opponent (with a similar appreciation) exclaim "whoa" in a Keanuesque manner.
(And nothing annoys me more than having to repeat the rules pertaining to the interaction a dozen times to the more casual player who has no better argument than "that's just not right!")
Anyways, all this comes together forming the player map of Vs. Sparse pockets of 2 or 3 players who can appreciate all the levels of the game, none really close enough to form a cohesive scene. And let's not forget the casuals.. slightly larger pockets who appreciate the game for other levels, but don't understand why they keep losing to the other group.
(As an aside, some of these players ask me why I never have a casual deck built. My only answer is because I don't like playing crappy decks. That's the honest definition of casual, isn't it? Not enough tutors, bad synergy, multiple one-ofs with no search, poorly thought out curve? Who wants to play that crap? Oh right, casuals..)
So neither of these groups are large enough alone in an area to foster a healthy community, and worse, they're mutually destructive.
What's the solution?
Online play.
I'm unspeakably sad that juggling all the trademarks and copyrights is keeping VsOnline from being the exceptional entity I know it could be.
Think of this.. You're a high level player, or at least you think you are. Sadly, you're all alone in your town. You sure wish you could find a similar level player to play against. You know they're out there, thanks to vsrealms and metagame, but they sure aren't local. What's been bringing stranded loners together for decades now? That's right, the internet.
Think of this.. You're a casual player, and you suck, though you don't like to think of it in those terms. Well online, everyone wears their rank on their sleeve. You want to play with a bunch of other casuals? More of them around than you can shake a stick at, and those sharks you hate so much are wearing big flashing lights all over them so you can exclude them if you want.
How many cities does Vs. die in because it's a few people short of critical mass? Online, there's only one city, and all the players are in it.
Please please please please please Vs Online... don't suck!

Maybe UDE should put packs into retail stores. Then the cash will start coming in. Has anyone seen the shelves for Yugioh and Magic. This is one of the reasons they are #1 and #2 in the buisness. You don't have to go to a specific store to purchase the product.
1. As always, we will be reading every response on this thread and discussing it. We greatly appreciate comments, whether they are positive or negative. It helps make us better and helps us understand what's important to our players.
2. We got this announcement out as soon as possible. There has been a lot of discussion over the last few weeks and months about exactly what plan to take, in fact up until last Friday many things were still in discussion in order to make the budget work.
3. Of everything I've read, I am most interested in two things: A lot more people than expected looked forward to PCQ-level competition (which is something we may be able to help with, even if they aren't specifically PCQs) and people would like the ability to sanction their own tournaments (something which I would initially think could be a problem, but I would want to think about carefully).
4. I completely expect some amount of players to quit, I also expect some players to be happy or neutral with this announcement. It was not something done lightly, as you can imagine.
Thanks very much,
Jeff
Rich and I have always been there for VS promoting, startibng our own UDE dedicated website, selling out. What have you done to show your gratitude?
I'll tell you. You guys screwed me out of PCQ winnings even though I jumped through all of your ever changing hoops. 2 years later still no dough. The whole time I still selflessly promoted you.
The former Fallout Cards. No love we had to pull Toby's teeth to get a preview card. Yet you had a link to some sub-par websites through the Metagame.COM.
We sat by and et you tout the big deck format when everyone knew that Fallout 5 existed a full 7 months before that. We thought it was good for the game and the right direction to go. Again selfless we sacrificed for your game.
Over one year of Podcasting and it's like we never existed to you guys. I am so hurt that you made these changes even though I was pretty sure something like this was coming. PCQ's and Sneaks were the only events run in Denver. Now VS will die here and it's a sad day for me. I love this darn game so much and now I wont even be able to play.
Sabertooth games is doing ok with UFS and they refuse to mass market. They are not interested in fighting for the top spot. They are happy to be that game we play between rounds of other games' tournaments.
Decipher had that with Young Jedi.
Star Wars ( Decipher) will always be one of my favorite games. I loved the intricate list of possible decks. I loved the restriction to only 60 cards. I loved that knowing the game and being able to pay attention to multiple aspects of the game at one time would more frequently win you a game than anything else losing you the game. Vs lacks some of that due to the speed and pacing. Missing drops is the death of many decks in this game.
Wow when i started reading this thread it was 21 pages its now 41 and will probably be 45 by the time i am done with my post.
Some thoughts
I loved the Legions set for flavor and limited play, don't know why so many people hated it.
I would drop VS immediately if started playing like the WoW card game. Wow just feels like a dumbed down magic with some vs type play thrown in.
The idea of making something like a Onyxia deck for VS does sound very appealing though.
Can anyone in the know explain the differences in money pay out from VS to Magic to Yugioh etc etc
I've always enjoyed Friday Night Magic playing for the chance at an FNM card and so forth, if VS was more like that I would be all for it
I'm not to worried by UDE's plan cause i have a hobby league, though its quite anemic 4-9 players depending on peoples schedules, I enjoy it and i hope it grows as I continue to push the game.
I play the game for the characters, EA cards, mats and deckboxes, if Ude replaced most of the money with products i would be X-static ;)
Though I agree that the Big name characters should be Good and up to the standards of other teams, I still appreciate the lesser known characters getting love. I love playing games were Arkham Inamates take down Superman or seeing the slingers beat the JLA. Vs allows lesser known teams to beat the popular ones, that rarely ever happnens in the comics. I can't be the only one that enjoys this
