I got de-friended over a Facebook arguement. Old friend from Highschool was saying someone would be a poor candidate for a local office beause they have friends who voted for Obama. I said "You've got friends who voted for Obama. Doe that mean you'd be a bad candidate?"
Ten minutes later, she no longer had any friends who had voted for Obama. I shrugged, repeated the phrase, "Damn, I'm glad I moved away from there," and went about my day.
I'm all for a good verbal 'debate', as long as both sides are willing to get as hard as they give. If you refuse to admit that your position has flaws, no matter what it is, then I don't want to talk to you. Nothing is perfect.
Now, I'm gonna go puke again. I think all the friggin' post-nasal drip is out of my system now... almost...
Basically Jacin is saying that everyone have the right to hate.
They do. Hate is an emotion; you have as much right to hate as you do love, happiness, and annoyedness. If the government could regulate hate, they could regulate any other feeling, and that'd be inhumane.
You shouldn't be allowed to use that hate to hurt people. That's why we have anti-discrimination laws. You can be a racist and own an apartment building; but it's illegal to use your feelings to hurt others by refusing minorities or treating them worse.
I fully support people's right to hate. But I also fully support people's right to hate people who hate.
Remember pre-internet how topics like religion and sex just weren't forced into debate amongst friends and, especially, amongst "casual acquaintances" or strangers?
(This isn't slamming anything said on here today - I agree with most of the viewpoints listed - but, rather, how before the internet people were better about not feeling the need to just start arguing to 1000+ people their viewpoint unless, say, they were running for politics.)
What is this era you speak of? It sounds blissful and idyllic. I would like to live there. Political stances aside. What ever happened to agreeing to disagree. Some people like to debate, and that's fine. Some people like to argue and need to be right, and that's where the problem comes in. Oh well, nothing we can do but be the wiser people.
Man, I feel really blessed. I've always had great, open minded, intelligent friends to debate politics and religion with, despite huge variances in belief.
It's so depressing to see that people can't accept that others' viewpoints are also valid, no matter how far they are from yours.
On a separate note, I have been the recipient of a random act of kindness. Someone sent me a case-sized box of extra clix. I will post a list eventually and will be paying it forward by having another Made Members free clix giveaway. Represented sets are AVM, TDKR, CW, and others.

I agree debate is fine and people should be open to one another's viewpoint. I just feel that post-internet, -everyone- feels it's okay to start a debate and be vehement about it. I should be able to, say, go to the dentist without having to be subjected to his viewpoint (especially as you're almost literally a captive audience in the midst of certain appointments). Plus, as noted, folks no longer have healthy talk, they have "I must win this arguement at all costs" vitriol spouting from them.
Just remember, not everyone on FB is going to agree with you and it's a public forum. It's not unlike going to the park and getting on a soapbox. Expect some cheers, expect some jeers and expect some people to go, "Any reason you feel a need to try and shove your viewpoint down my throat?".
"Nobody important? That's amazing. You know, in 900 years of traveling time and space I've never met someone who wasn't important."
