Well, my curiosity got the better of me, so I found the answer with an online search engine. I'm not going to post it because I feel that is the lowest kind of cheating. I do doubt the veracity of Mr. Shooter's account of why DC refused to publish it, though.
Oh, okay, I thought I'd need to name all the names. But if not, and if it's my turn to ask a question, then...
Speaking of token black characters, when Jim Shooter started writing for the Legion, he planned to introduce the Legion's first token black character (years before Tyroc). Name the character who would've been the Legion's first token black character if the higher ups had let Shooter have his way.
I dont know about token, but Ferro Lad was origially intended to be coloured, and they werent going to reveal it right off. They werent going to unmaks him till some time after the character debuted or just show his twin brother after his death, and then just go along as if it wasnt anything out of the ordinary. Not a token "Black" character in my mind, just a character who happened to be non caucasoid.

Well, he was going to be revealed to be black just so that the Legion would have a black member, which to my mind makes him a token. Anyway, Ferro Lad was who I was looking for.
Since Shooter couldn't make him black, he just went ahead and killed him off.
And according to the article I read, Shooter said DC was afraid that distributors wouldn't carry their comics in the South if they introduced a black character. I find that hard to believe, since Marvel had introduced the Black Panther a year earlier. If it is true it certainly speaks of cowardice on DC's part.

Your question.
To my way of thinking, for him to be a token he would had to have been put on the team just so they had a Black member and that would have made him unusual. The way they had it set up was that he was going to be on the team, nobody would know he was black, and then when it was revealed there woudlnt hav ebeen a fuss, becasue it shouldnt have been unusualy for blacks to be on the teams in the 30th century. It was jsut another person. Kind of Like Jim Rhodes when he was Iron Man. The charaters were black but that was just becasue there are blacks in reality. Same thing with Northstar. he wasnt a token Q, he was the mutant with the speed powers and then years later we find out hes pink.
Which charter member of the JLA has not been portrayed on a US Postage stamp?

And yet, Marvin the Martian was on one. Weird, too, Marvin wants to destroy the earth, while J'onn is trying to protect it and yet, who do they make a stamp of?
Now, it's joke time;
Two postal workers were standing at a corner when one points to the ground, at a snail and says to the other postman "Hey, look at that snail". The second postman stomps on it, killing the snail. The first postman says "Hey, why'd you do that?". The second postman says "That bastards been following me on my route all day now".
Yup, J'onny always gets the shaft it seems. We never even got to see him in the old Superfirends show. The first I even knew of him was during the Super Powers figures run.
Its yours
