A logical guess considering the clue. Brand did guest star in this Spectre run at times, but this character was not a guest star. He appeared in every issue.

I'll make the obvious guess and say: The Spectre.

....and you would be correct. After events in Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Jim Corrigan was resurrected and once again, The Spectre and Corrigan as seperate being. The Spectre resided in Corrigan's body and left him to go on missions of vengeance. The brutality and finality of "Moonface's" form of "justice" upset Corrigan and he often fought with the Spectre over it, even trying to deny Spectre access to him to recharge.

Spectre 2nd series was a comic that would have been part of the Vertigo line if it had come out a few years later, and is a tragically overlooked book. It also featured a lot of Madame Xanadu.
