I just ordered a box of MTU and convinced a mate of mine to pick up the game. Naysayers - quit with the naysaying. Everyone go out a grab a new guy/gal.
Pfft, if grabbing a new gal was that easy, you think I'd be playing cards? :disappoin
I haven't heard UD address the issue of putting cards into Walmart/Target, etc.
As I've shown my students the game, many have shown an interest. Unfortunately, they don't know where the comic shop is and can't get there. I've tried to help with them knowing where it is, but I can't get them there. Mom and Dad go to Walmart a lot. A kid could convince them to buy some while they are there.
I'm sure there are some issues with walmart competing against the comic stores being a bad thing. Is that the only issue? Is there a price issue? What else is it?
Yugioh, Magic, Pokemon, SportsCards all get sold at Wal-Mart and yet there are game stores and sports card stores that manage to stay open as well. It just seems that even without advertising, having the cards in a place where billions of people will see them, would be a good form of advertising. I've see a box of superman in the wal-mart twice. I left it there for a week so people could see it, then I bought it to get it off the shelf hoping they would put more in. That's right, I bought boxes of superman in hopes that they would put more in. Dedication baby!!!

The forums are alive and blooming already. We have an Illuminati movement, a fresh face for VsSystem.com and a bright bright future to aim for.
Let 'em naysay all they want. We are fixin' to carry on without them, for a long time.
Damn you're slow, Kam - I preordered my box of MTU three weeks ago... and just yesterday gve 2-300 X-Men related cards to a visiting buddy to take back to Alberta with him, after helping him use a basic Spider-Friends curve to kick the living bejeebus out of an X-Men curve deck.
I think the final score was 44 to -12 or something like that. Didn't hurt that the X-Men player missed 4 turns worth of drops.
How many people are in your play group? How often do you play? How many new people have you introduced to the game? How much do you spend on new cards? Why are there not more people like you? What are your suggestions on keeping the game healthy?
There's just 5 of us. We play about every three weeks or so. We're all in our mid-thirties and have other obligations. Sometimes a few of us will get together in between regular sessions if time permits. When a new set comes out 3 of us will usually by 3-4 boxes. The other 2 are more selective about what sets they will buy. I personally spend about $250-$300 per set. So I pump in over $1000.00 a year. On the whole, I would estimate that my playgroup is responsible for about $3,500-4,000 a year in card sales. Not bad for 5 guys.
I was the last guy recruited into the group. We haven't really pulled anyone new into the game since I joined the group and frankly we probably won't be converting any new players. We play kitchen table games except for the occassional sneak preview. My point is, there must be other groups like us out there. Just because we are showing up at tournaments or being vocal on forums, don't think we're not out here buying product.
There are people who play CCGs because they are FUN and dont give a rats ### about the money. Some people do have good jobs and just want to play games to unwind. These people hate professional players like you. You're calling everyone that doesnt want to invest hundreds of hours into 'draft camp' etc stupid and incapable.
People like you are the reason the game is dying. No one wants to play with a dick. Anyone that just wants to play the game for fun can't do it around pro players because they just get crushed.
I dropped out of PC indy after round 2 to go play another game that I actually enjoy. My team won that PC. I passed on playing a deck that put 11 of the 12 people playing it into day 2 just so I could avoid people like you. I love playtesting this game. I love building decks for this game. People like you make me hate playing it.
Don't look down on people that just want to have a good time. We're not stupid, you're just unbearable to be around.
Where did I say I looked down on you or them? I was stating a pretty glaring fact. And I base it solely on personal experience in the card industry for over 10 years and owning a card store for almost six. People like me are not why the game is dying. I guarantee I have done more for this game than you ever have. But it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what is wrong with the game. The engine is sound. The prize support was outstanding. The themes are amazing. The passionate player base is there. The one problem that we are forced to deal with is that there is a very steep learning curve, a level of complexity that the average dumb, lazy (insert whatever word you like here) gamer just doesn't want to deal with. Sure, I probably should have sugar-coated that statement originally but it wouldn't change the fact that I am right.
You need to learn to read better, Shoe and to stop putting words in my mouth.
But there are thousands of players like him. And me. If there weren't, VS wouldn't still be around. Do you think the game survives solely on the dollars from the 300 people that attend PC events?
I'm not calling you any names, but saying that you and the small number of people like you are the only reason VS is alive... that's a very ignorant claim.
I can tell you want the game to succeed, and so do I. Instead of trying to alienate anyone, we should all be trying to save it.
For most CCGs, there are two levels to the game: casual and professional. Telling a potential new player about a game from a professional perspective will turn them off immediately. Most games have top-tier decks that require 4 copies of a rare. It doesn't make the game worthless if a new player doesn't have all of those cards.
New players will most enjoy a game if they play against other new or equally casual players. The best known characters from both Marvel and DC can have solid decks that will play well against one another. When not playing a pro-style deck (whether the person wielding the deck is a casual or pro player), most players will be able to play their favorite characters well enough to enjoy the experience.
On another note, there are most definitely thousands of casual players to this game. There have to be to cover the costs of the license, printing, and art. I can't go into too much detail without breaking an NDA with another game company, but the cost of the license, printing, packaging (this is a substantial cost to game production), art ($750 per piece - my guess for how much UDE spends per painting/illustration), and promotional products (deck boxes, playmats, etc.) probably requires UDE to sell at least 4 million cards per set to cover costs and that doesn't even count cash prizes. BTW, 4 million cards breaks down to 285,000 packs or 12,000 boxes.
Barrier 3
Then even if you get past this barrier they go ok so I wanna play a lets say an Avengers deck with Captain America, Hulk, and Iron Man and stuff. The first thing you do is go, "Ok can you live without Iron Man. Hes all crazy with the whole Civil War thing anyway." after eluding this problem you then reach the problem of this.
Barrier 4
Ok to build a deck that doesn't implode on itself your gonna need X at each drop up the Curve and your gonna want redundant plot twists oh and to make sure your deck can Actually hit Captain your gonna need to fit in a couple random characters you may not want and also you'll need to pick up 4 X of this rare Avengers Assemble.
And why would they need to live without Iron Man? And 4 X rare cards? Well that's the point of CCGs and TCGs rare cards, and trading to get them. (You Collect or Trade for the cards)

Again the point of Random packs. If you just bought a deck that had the cards you wanted, this would be Uno, or poker. If they dislike DC so bad, then they don't have to use the cards printed with a DC logo on them, but really, does it matter if it's a plot twist? and more so does it matter if that little DC logo in on the card? Who hates DC so bad they wont use Megablast just because of the logo in the corner. Only way to get around that is not use either DC or Marvel.

I would but my current gal might have a problem with it... :p
This is my first post ever on a forum such as this. I have worked in comics and games for over a decade. I am an avid player of many games. VS is the big one for me though.
I want to put a big shout out "thank you" to stubarnes, Bendrix, Access, bortrea, PowrDragn, WalterKovacs and many many others for moving me to make an account and post.
Comics brought me to Vs. The people I have met because of it make me stay.
You are welcome. And you are now the new record holder. That was the Best First Post of all time, on any message board, ever. Wow.
And what part of We Disagree do you not understand?
Listen, we have been given a fresh start here. It might work, and it might not. You are semmingly telling us that Vs. Sytem will die all the way and your expertise has uncovered the reason beyond all doubt.
We Disagree. And we are ready to work our asses off to prove you wrong.
Can you just give us a year with the new plans and then meet back here to see who was right? We are already starting our rebirth plans and you are raining on our new parade. We understand what you are saying, but we don't want to slow down our efforts and feel any worse than we already do.
You can say "I told you so." IF we fail. But at least let us try.
Where did I say I looked down on you or them? I was stating a pretty glaring fact. And I base it solely on personal experience in the card industry for over 10 years and owning a card store for almost six.
If you were the expert you claim to be, you would know that a fact is not based on anecdotal evidence, even 10 years of it. An opinion can be formed, maybe even a valid one, but a fact is something that can be proven objectively true or untrue.
Listen, pros are not the bane of Vs system. Casual players are not the bane of Vs system. There are sins, transgressions, and, yes, laziness on both sides. For all the sniping going on around here, your black-and-white proclamations that can basically be boiled down to "that's just the way it is" and "if you don't have the pros, you have nothing" adds nothing to the dialogue but more heat and ill will. Yes, there might be jealousy because pros get paid money and casuals don't, which I think is what you're arguing, but it is not a sound basis of the massive generalization you are making. Ascribing the motivation of "I can be pro, Ma!" to everyone who isn't a pro, especially given the revered status of the source material, strikes many as a little arrogant. And, gee whiz, you're being called on it.
I think your intentions are good, but it might be a good idea to cool off and think about why exactly you're posting before you do it again, because, all due respect, you tend to take a kind of self-righteous bent that only escalates the tension--something I think (maybe) you're trying to ease.
See, statements like this...

kind of rile people up. Not sure if you've noticed that yet.
