How am I supposed to go to the manchaster master challenge without PCQ's? There is, never was and never will be a city Championship where I live. There have been 3 PCQ's the last 2 years. I already stopped playing, but started again with the hope to go to play in manchaster...I feel like a moron spending money on the last 3 sets. I should have burned everything
Your opinions are extraordinarily naive - that's all DocX was telling you.
Sheesh.
-S
Wow...it was over and you wanted to get a dig in? What a jerk...nothing naive about my opinions, and I'll thank you to never do anything like this again.
They are doing the yugi - jaden form of playing.... it its better to play for fun because you will always win and you will always have the winning card on the upcoming draw and if you dont believe me watch the series ...
it is like yu gi if you believe in your deck and have fun playing you will never lose and the cartoons have the prof
VS has a lot of Barriers that prevent it from being widely successful. The problem is that these barriers aren't small things that can be avoided. The player must literally be drug through them all in a linear sequence to get fully into VS even on a basic functional casual level.
Barrier 1
This game doesn't connect to people interested in the license alone. Our store is literally coated with Comics, Action Figures of Comic characters, and nerds interested and discussing comics. They look at VS and go, Where is batman? Who are these people? This is a comic game?
So you start them off with a starter deck instead of throwing a RANDOM pack at them that they might not care about.
Quote
Barrier 2
We have people that love comics and CCGs and won't even touch the game because we mention that Batman, Superman, X-men, yeah, they all suck balls unless you like mix them with Hellfire Club members and well batman sorta works if you build this combo deck around A child named Valeria and Cosmic Radiation... and so on
So you don't start selling the game with "Well, here are all the problems on the most competitive level that you probably won't be playing at right out of the gate anyway".
Don't bore them with the details.
Get them to PLAY THE GAME so they can learn it ... This is cart before the horse stuff.
Quote
Barrier 3
Then even if you get past this barrier they go ok so I wanna play a lets say an Avengers deck with Captain America, Hulk, and Iron Man and stuff. The first thing you do is go, "Ok can you live without Iron Man. Hes all crazy with the whole Civil War thing anyway." after eluding this problem you then reach the problem of this.
What?
This barrier is you being a jerk and telling the player "You can't play what you want to play, you can only play established decks that have done well!"
It's about developing new PLAYERS not necessarily new hyper competitive players that will be at the pro circuit within a month.
If the people you are trying to attract are NOT gamers originally ... don't assume their goal is to BE gamers. Get them to like the game BECAUSE of the characters ... then once they like the GAME, you can teach them how to excel at the game.
Again, cart before the horse.

Barrier 4
Ok to build a deck that doesn't implode on itself your gonna need X at each drop up the Curve and your gonna want redundant plot twists oh and to make sure your deck can Actually hit Captain your gonna need to fit in a couple random characters you may not want and also you'll need to pick up 4 X of this rare Avengers Assemble.
First of all ... Avengers Assemble is BOTH a Hobby League EA and a Gallery Pack rare EA.
Not to mention, it's likely not the most expensive rare in the world considering Avengers LEADER is far from tier one.
You can explain to a player the concept of deck building and things like that. Perfectly fine. Although, you should be starting off with teaching them how to play with decks they DON'T have to buy and build 'themselves' ... get them to love PLAYING the game, and then get them loving the 'meta-game' involved in battle preperations [i.e. deck construction/tweaking/gold-fishing/etc]
Cart ... horse ...

Barrier 5
Bad magic decks made up of a bunch of random spells built from purchasing some packs work for the purposes of playing the game. Bad Vs decks completly explode and provide no thrill to the player playing them because missing a drop loses you the game until your opponent misses. The game seems almost completly luck based at this point and almost stupid. You are clear with them they are gonna need to get a good list of specific cards to make a deck that works.
Or start with a deck that works for teaching them.
If you have two decks with a solid, consistent curve, some pumps, some tricks, etc ... they should be a good match up for each other.
Throw someone that just learned how to swim into the ocean ... they may drown.
Teach a player how to play ... eventually they'll want to learn how to build ... and then they'll want to buy cards so they can build what they want.
First you have the horse and behind IT is the cart.
Quote
Barrier 6
Even if after telling them this they go ok so I want to get these cards. You go well heres where you get on the VS singles market and buy cards because buying small numbers of packs will never allows you to build a fully functional deck. For that reason most of us don't have a lot of extra random cards to go around. Especially when money is tight for most players playing casually anyway.
This depends on the area ... there are some that like the game so much they buy boxes of every set and rarely get around to doing it. However this is a 'down the line' issue. At this point the player is saying "I want to invest money in this game" ... Now they could get turned off by the cost of doing so as a 'barrier' ... but Modern Age is good for a reason ... they can focus on a single set and likely get a decent [not necessarily great] modern deck out of it, and have to chase down [trading/buying] singles from the other modern sets to fill it out.
See, the horse pulls the cart, it doesn't push it.

Barrier 7
Now here comes where you try to help them learn how to play their deck. Look out Speedbumps ahead like: Reverse chain, Triggered Abilities for all kinds of random parts of the turn, Chaining to Costs to make effective plays, you can respond to some effects but costs can't be... OH GOD watch out for Formation and Reinforcement.
If you make it through the game rules, Now after building their deck and experiencing a true solid game of VS between functional decks, (If they survived getting to this point) they go this game is awesome!
Hurray victory! BUT WAIT Now we reach the ominous point of whether or not this person is going to be usefull the the VS community and UDE.
You have a person buy cards and build a deck BEFORE TEACHING THEM HOW TO PLAY THE GAME?
How is the deck building lesson any help at all?
Once people have played the game, they'll understand the idea of maximizing resources, of board pressence, of why attack pumps are good, defense pumps are good, etc ...
Until then ... all that stuff would be going over the players head.
You START with two decks that should be 'fair' against each other [maybe give the player a deck that is a little bit better] and you go through the game that way. You can explain SOME of the 'complicated' concepts like the chain, or formation and reinforcement.
But having them buy cards and build a deck before they even play the game?
Now I'm beating the dead horse with the cart ...

Barrier 8
So they play their deck and they are still having fun. The license oriented player that gets excted about VS then gets stuck in the rut and goes. Well I really only want to ever play the Avengers because they are most awesome ever..... (This is the point where I spout expletives in my head)
So now you have a player who essentially doesn't buy product. Hes nice to play a few random games with but overall as time progresses he gets less and less usefull, or you can also get this guy.
I think I'll only ever want to play with X and X team but I don't wanna buy packs and get cards I'll never use. I also hate DC its for all the superjesus fanboy lovers. I'm never gonna buy any DC. (Disclaimer: This is no reflection on my stance on comics. I am a universal fan of comics and like reading them all surprising thanks to VS system)
This isn't a barrier ... this is a 'risk'.
And if those people go to HOBBY LEAGUE, they are still supporting the store to some extent. And, EVENTUALLY, there will be a re-feature.
Some players might only enjoy the game as far as their particular favorite characters are concerned ... well, at least it's someone to play against, to attend Hobby Leagues, etc. It's one more person playing and if they don't normally buy EVERY SET that comes out ... they'll likely save up and buy quite a bit when their favorite characters to. Some players stick to a single team just to keep their costs down. They could spend NOTHING on the game, but buying for a specific team and paying entry fee for tournaments is better than nothing.
People that want to play but don't want to spend ANY money on the game? Hey, some places are just looking for people to play. I have a friend who can't really afford to play limited events, but it's always better to have more people. So I pay for him, and get his cards. He gets to play, I get to purchase twice as many cards [and get doubled chances at prizes].
Speaking of which ... SEALED is a great way to teach a player about deck building [note: NOT draft ... draft is later].
Open 5 packs of a set they like, put together a curve and some pumps.
Limited can be an expensive format, but it also helps to build up a resevoir of cards for them to be able to build constructed decks with.

Conclusion
This fun little progression I go about doing is something that basically happens all the time when we try to get people into the game. Only one player out of probably the 20 plus people we got standing around the game while we play has made it past all these hurdles and started actually playing all aspects of the game.
Theres just so many entry barrier problems and conflicts with flavor of the license itself. This is why this game is in the situation it is in now. It will turn into and forever be a niche game.
Sadly no one is ever gonna read my post as its in far too deep. Sigh...
Wow, it's hard trying to get through the ever-growing list of pages and I apologise if this topic has been hounded to death in the 20 or so pages I have yet to read.
As an Australian PTO, UDE freelancer (art requests and flavour text for DC sets), fledgling Metagame writer and - most importantly - a massive comic book and Vs System fanboy ... I feel I have a lot invested in this game.
Disclaimer - I have no special or insider knowledge that I base any of the below on. I pretty much just know what everybody else knows (i.e. what has been publicly announced).
I'll admit right out of the gates that I'm a largely casually-focused guy, but I love the good times that occasional high-end tournaments provide (mainly in terms of catching up with members of the Australian Vs community from other states). I'm naturally concerned about elements of the announced changes, but I remain committed to this game regardless of the OP structure and prize support.
Onto David's ideas ... I think a lot of the goals behind your suggestions are good and worthwhile, but I also believe that the desired outcomes can be approximated without starting from scratch.
I wouldn't favour starting from scratch because I believe it would further alienate a player base that is already smarting a little. If Vs crashes and burns, then I would love if a new comic-focused game could rise phoenix-like from the ashes ... but everyone is hoping to avoid that situation in the first place.
Whatsmore, I think UDE has already identified these goals and has already set the ball rolling in the direction you are suggesting. In the next two sets (MTU and DWF), as well as the two expansions after that (MML and DDL, blindly guessing those will be the codes for those sets), UDE have focused on refeatured teams. It seems to me the fact that X-Men are returning in MML so soon after MXM indicates that the idea of core teams for Vs is already starting to take form.
Marvel Core Teams
X-Men
Brotherhood
Fantastic Four
Doom
Spider-Friends
Sinister Syndicate
Avengers
Masters of Evil
Marvel Knights/Marvel Defenders (alternating)
Teams like X-Men could potentially "absorb" allied teams like Morlocks, X-Statix and numerous teams not yet appearing in Vs System, with dual affiliations or use of versions (ala Wrecking Crew). Same for Fantastic Four and Inhumans and so on. But this can be done without changing the current structure of the game.
DC Core Teams
JLA
Villains United/Injustice Gang/Secret Society (splitting these teams up borders on semantics anyway, especially when there are umbrella teams like Emerald Enemies that aren't "true" teams in a comics sense anyway)
Gotham Knights
Arkham Inmates
Team Superman
Revenge Squad
Green Lantern/Speed Force (alternating)
Teen Titans
Darkseid's Elite/Anti-Matter (alternating)
Similar "absorptions" could work with DC too (JLA - JLI, JSA and even potentially Green Lantern since the key characters mostly overlap ... heck, JLA could just about absorb any DC hero team in a pinch).
Other teams not on either list could be refeatured much less frequently or just supported through dual affiliations and legacy content.
New teams could still be created, but could either be the one new team in a set and/or feature as mini-teams. UDE have proven that mini-teams can be designed to be successful in both sealed and constructed play, so there is no reason to feature full-sized teams that have to be padded out with less recognisable characters (as a fanboy, I love seeing those guys ... but I don't need to see quite so many of them every set).
Assuming each expansion carries three core teams, one new team and (maybe) one mini team, none of the listed teams would ever be dead in Silver Age. So you could either expand the list of core teams or have two new teams feature in every second set instead of one.
New teams are good for the game and will help UDE take full advantage of the great licences they have secured ... but by focusing on the core teams they will also be maximising the value they gain from those licences (ie high recognition in the target market).
So, David, based on the teams focus of the next four sets, as well as as an apparent back-to-basics approach (not new mechanics in MTU), it seems to me that you are will be getting most of your wishes in the near future.
I also hope that search is more heavily team-stamped and less powerful in general, but that's up to the designers. I hope they realise the importance of making the game more accessible. Fingers crossed.
Keep in mind that when MTU rotates in, MXM rotates out of Modern Age and Enemy of My Enemy will be gone in that format. When the set after DDL rotates in, EoME will be gone for Silver. It won't take that long to settle down and I predict that it will become increasingly better with every set release.
Even your avatar idea could be incorporated into the current framework without returning to the drawing board. I saw this done in other games I have played int he past. Personally I didn't like it that much, but that was just me. I agree with another poster, though, that I wouldn't want Vs to become a WOW clone (but a Raid-type Vs product would be gladly welcomed, people in my play group when as far as to design our own) ... I just don't enjoy that game as much.
As for the name of the game, shrug. "Vs" certainly turns up in comics, but your point isn't without merit. Unfortunately we're stuck with it for better or worse. ;)
Sorry this is so long ... I get carried away easily.
I was not for core sets (like Magic) but if you did core teams like this then that would be cool you would still have some team diversity and yet still have the Big Guns always getting more and most people would perfer to play the big guns its just most of the big guns sucked
Im all for this guys idea
If anyone is looking for a vs hobby league in the nj area, tonight theres one at realitys edge
i couldn't resist the cheesy plug, seeing how were talking about HL
While we're doing the cheesy plugs, Marvel Team Up draft this Sunday at Little Shop of Comics in Scotch Plains, NJ. (VS Zombie: We really need to have a LS/RE team event sometime too)

Especially when it came to building the deck. Wtf you supposed to tell someone who wants to build a deck and you just don't have any cards but the most recent set in your shop? I know Avengers Assemble is easy to get. I know a lot of cards are easy to get. Its still completly intimidating to the player to tell them they need to go shop online.
I never said they had to play tier 1. I would go through the characters they like and help build a deck that is consistent with tricks (and cheap). The Iron Man thing was a joke. Its frustrating to a player that wants to play their FAVORITE TEAM to tell them they can't because you have to purchase X packs from an old set that isn't available anymore locally. The CCG allure of buying packs and trading doesn't work on most people at all around me. (Especially on a comic fan who just want their favorite team) So you are left with buying singles online if they want to play their favorite team.
In reference to its ok if the player only buys cards he likes, that is never ok. There wouldn't be VS if there weren't players such as myself that bought boxes every set (Well... not DLS. Nice try on X-men round 2 UDE).
how is it not available? try using MAgazene Exchange. they have loads of old stuff. that's one way Game Nightz has a box+ from EVERY VS set (gallery pacs not included)
One thing that I think no one has mentioned is the release date for World's Finest. According to the OP docs, WF was supposed to be legal on June 1. Now, it appears to be pushed back even more. I have to wonder why this was done and the ramifications of this decision.
So now, we're going to have a lull of almost 3 months between this latest announcement and the release of the next set. You already have people who are quitting the game. You already have zero organized play during these next 3 months except for Sydney. And, oh yeah, MTU (and I suppose Hellboy) needs to carry Vs. for the next 3 months without having a big tournament to showcase it.
I don't know about you, but the next 3 months are going to be very telling as far as the future of Vs. is concerned. The success of World's Finest is also going to be crucial.
I was told by alot of people that the problem with VS was the UDE made it a money game from the start and did not even bothering making a huge casual fan base and now there trying that...i hope it is not to late
