In this particular context, it's a mass where the rosary is recited in memorium of a deceased individual; usually done the night before a funeral (though sometimes they happen afterwards).

Correct.
This was my first time being to one, what with being Lutheran, but the family is close enough that they even had me sit with the immediate family, and they've often called me family, so I decided I needed to be there.
I was going to go to the funeral today as well, but I'm sick at home (again) today.
It was my friend's grandma. He really hasn't had deaths in the family prior to this, so he took it pretty hard.

I was raised Catholic and married a Lutheran. I know what a rosary is, but probably have not been to one for decades, literally. I remember it as a very solemn occasion. By the way, rosaries can be said for other events other than wakes or funerals.

Yeah, it's just most people will only encounter them for those...or if you've got someone like my mother who says the rosary at least once a day.

Yeah, the main problem, as a Lutheran, was that I didn't know any of the prayer, save for "Our Father", because that's our Lord's Prayer. Except it cuts off, where I'm used to continuing onward, so I had to stop myself a few times.
My friend and his siblings told me that it was the "whole rosary", so I assume that you use a shortened version from time to time.
I used to know most of this stuff, though. My confirming Pastor made it very important that we understood everything about Catholicism, so that we then would understand the differences.
Oh well, I just sat there and chimed in when I knew the part. The end of the rosary had some prayer that only one or two people seemed to know, so I'm assuming that it's only used at actual rosaries.

"The Rosary (from Latin rosarium, meaning "rose garden")[1] or "garland of roses"[2] is a popular and traditional Catholic devotion. The term denotes the prayer beads used to count the series of prayers that make up the rosary. The prayers consist of repeated sequences of the Lord's Prayer followed by ten prayings of the Hail Mary and a single praying of "Glory Be to the Father" and is sometimes accompanied by the Fatima Prayer; each of these sequences is known as a decade. The praying of each decade is accompanied by meditation on one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which recall the life of Jesus Christ.
The traditional 15 Mysteries of the Rosary were standardized, based on the long-standing custom, by Pope St. Pius V in the 16th century. The mysteries are grouped into three sets: the joyful mysteries, the sorrowful mysteries, and the glorious mysteries. In 2002, Pope John Paul II announced five new optional mysteries, the luminous mysteries, bringing the total number of mysteries to 20.
The term has come to be used to refer to similar beads in other religions."

There's nothing quite like coming back to work from an all-too-short vacation, only to learn that, due to the lack of your presence, there was almost a revolt, and that you are now banned, under threat of violence, from ever taking a vacation again.
Why didn't I bring any of my booze back with me from Virginia?

This is pretty much the reaction whenever I'm gone as well.
Fortunately, this last time, my boss went absolutely ape#### that people were just piling things on my desk instead of taking care of them.

It surprised me which of the teachers were most pissed that I was gone. One of the preschool teachers, who is always immaculately polite to me when she comes in for something in the kitchen, even if it's something either me or chef have screwed up, she's always calm and collected.
I get back to work today, and a couple teachers (including the above) are in the kitchen picking up breakfast, dropping off trays, dropping of lunch counts or something, and when I make a joke about, "I guess this means I'm not allowed to go on vacation anymore, huh?" "NO!
The first thought that went through my mind was, " My God, Chef, what did you DO?"

Did you find out what she did, or just let it drop?
I really gotta start using more pronouns.
Well, first off, when I'm not there, there is more for Chef to do, which means she gets more stressed, because she has to get the dishes washed, the meals prepped, and the trays ready in a timely fashion.
And it's harder to do that when the teachers are coming in during serving time and making special requests. When I'm around, when those sorts of things come up, I handle them. When I'm not, well, anger ensues.
