Let's see, Mal, Darq, Adam, Gfish... Okay I guess I see why I died my first night in the game not once, but TWICE!
The first kill I totally understand, the second? The second felt a little harsh.
Also, who the heck was the doctor that didn't doctor the only person (also the Doctor ) to claim on D1?
If it makes you feel better, you weren't the target the second time around. I don't know who misdirected the kill, but somebody did. But yeah, you were the mafia hit Night 1.

I take full credit for the Night 1 kill, if only because you seem to have a greater-than-normal probability of being a vigilante when we're in games together.
Wasn't THAT personal (well, maybe a little with Fantasy Football...)
Speaking of personal, I wasn't acting to try and deflect Day 1. I was genuinely angry that it was a case of "Mal is always evil" rising up. And of course, it WOULD happen when I was a scummer for once.
And of course, when I suggest we protect Johanna N2 (as I figured she'd be vulnerable to a vig kill) instead of me... that's when I get killed. Once again, my horrible TV mafia luck rears its head.

Heh, I know it isn't personal (I take it a sign of respect, in my delusional gradeur. ), it just felt a little crappy to die after one day of game both times.
Plus I REALLY dug the Doctor role and the fact that I got to edit posts and would get a power based on my mason, which I never found out what it was. So I was really really bummed when I died N1.
Grats to the winners BTW.
Also Mags, the game was not unbalanced. If it makes you feel any better, my 2nd role basically had me vouching for an SK and member of the mafia, lol.

That is not what happened. As far as I know that hasn't been a thing for quite a while. It was exactly as I said. I can't remember what I did last week let alone how anyone acts or what hangups they might have from game to game. Don't make me feel bad for playing the game. If I feel like voting for someone, I'm going to. And if I get a feeling on someone, I'm going to follow through. Don't take it so personal. Honestly Mal, it wasn't a thing.

In retrospect, I realize that. Well played.
I was just explaining my reaction at the time. I retrospect, I should have just said #### it, it's a Magnito game, I'm going to be screwed.

Info: You are Adam Conover, playing as an over-the-top version of himself, and titular character from the show Adam Ruins Everything. A show that started as a skit on College Humor’s Youtube channel, it eventually became a full on TV show where Adam gets to use his near infinite knowledge to ruin all the best things in life: buying a house, a dog, a car, Adam ruins them all. You are also the only survivor of my last mafia game, meaning you are the only role guaranteed to be in this game. Too bad you are back as the leader of the mafia. Being bad just suits you better. You can ruin so many more people’s days from this side of the board.
Powers: TV Magic: You have the power of TV magic. These powers allow you to change the rules of the game to your mafia’s benefits. Each night, you may write a section of the write up. And with the magic of TV, things you want tend to come to pass. What you write about in this section will come to pass. Use this power wisely and you can influence the game. Think of it like a ghost writer, but with actually consequences to what you add. There are however, some rules, so allow me to outline them.
You may not name a character by name, only descriptions (gender, hair color, style, etc.) If your write up describes a blonde getting role blocked, some blonde will be.
Your write up must include yourself. Preferably ruining something for someone. Taking something generally thought up as good and showing the downsides to it. Because as you say on your show, TV magic is usable by the one with the knowledge.
Anything you say will be interpreted by me when I decide what action it is describing. I will be fair, as long as you don’t try and break the game.
You cannot use the power to directly score an extra kill for your mafia.
This role is fairly experimental, so be creative. See what you can do. And have fun.
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
I wanted Adam to have a lot of power, so I thought a carte balnche type power would be appropriate. I also liked the idea of a ghost writer that had actual influence. However, I think that too much freedom made it hard. Should maybe have set restrictions.
Info: You are Lucifer Morningstar, title character of the show Lucifer, as played by Tom Ellis. A fallen angel, banished to rule over Hell for all eternity, that is, until you grew tired of it. So, what does the devil do when he needs a change? Move to LA and open a night club, obviously. That is, until a run in with the LAPD peaks your interest and you become a consultant. Helping them solve crimes and punishing the guilty, it’s what you do best.
Powers:
Persuasion: You have this ability that makes people open up to you. You ask a question, and they seem compelled to answer it. At night, you may target a player and have them divulge information to you. Their role, their power, their targets, anything really. But they will only answer one question, so choose what you wish to learn wisely. Nearly Immortal: You are fairly difficult to kill, given that you are an angel and all. This gives you some degree of Night Kill immunity. Not complete, though. There are things out there that can hurt you, so don’t rely on your natural immunity too much.
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
Immune to Night Kills, not immune to Supergirl as she didn't kill, she captured
Info: You are Samantha Bee, political current event host of your own show, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. I first started watching this show by accident. I was on vacation, in a hotel room, watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and when it ended, I couldn’t find the remote. So, I let the next show start, and that show was Full Frontal. It fit my political leanings and sense of humor near perfectly, and I’ve watched it ever since. Samantha is funny, clever and although very biased in how she reports politics (she’s left leaning, but so am I, so I don’t mind the bias), but she is always entertaining.
Powers:
Political Influence: I don’t think Samantha Bee actually had too much political influence, given that her target audience probably the people who already think like her, but people political, I’m giving you the power to mess with the polls. At night, you can raise or lower the number of votes needed to lynch someone on the following day. You may do this twice. Targeting the same person will lower or raise the required number by 2, or you can hedge your bets and target 2 different people. There are 2 rules you must follow. You can never raise the vote high enough to make someone effectively unlynchable. You may never lower the vote low enough that your mafia can sweep the vote with no outside help. You will always need at least one neutral or town member to join in. Have to keep things fair, afterall.
Info: You are Marge Simpson, matriarch of the Simpson family from the long running show, The Simpsons. Voice by Julie Kavner, you are one of the members of the titular family, you find yourself in the mafia of this game. I haven’t included a character from The Simpsons in ages. This is because I haven’t really enjoyed the show since about it’s 12th season, which was over a decade ago. But I recently rewatched those first 12 seasons and remembered how good the show used to be. So I decided it was time to come back to it again, and it is Marge’s turn to shine.
Powers:
Cleaning Up Messes: Marge is the classic homemaker, and while that trope may not exist as much these days, Marge is a product of the 80’s and thus, her character development is largely stuck there. Never having had a job that lasts more than a single episode, Marge cleans up after her family, and so that is your job here. If you are not making the mafia hit, you can clean up after the hitman, leaving no clues behind. This will protect the hitman from info type powers. You are not a janitor though, so don’t be confused. Maggie: As any good mother would, you also have Maggie here with you. Maggie can be used in two different ways. If you keep her with you, she adds a half vote to yours. Half votes will be able to puch the vote over majority when an even number of players remain (ex: if there are 10 players, it will say that 6 is a majority, but really, 5.5 is, so you can use your half vote to get an easy lynch there).
Maggie can also be sent out as a distraction, misdirecting the player you send her to. Maggie will find her way back to you after. You may always use Maggie, even when making the hit or using your other power.
Info: You are Luke Cage, as played by Mike Colter on the new Netflix show Luke Cage. The most recently addition to the growing number of superhero TV shows (and seriously, can Marvel and Netflix do no wrong here, or what?) you are the titular character, and a man who never really wanted to be a hero. Born Carl Lucas, the son of a preacher, you end up in prison for a crime you didn’t commit. While there, in an unfortunate sequence of events, you end up the subject of an experiment that gives you super strength and makes your skin impenetrable. This abilities allow you to break out and start life again with a new identity: Luke Cage.
Powers:
Carl Lucas: I had a hard time deciding if you should be in the mafia. The theme, as I’m sure you can all figure out, is characters whose names appear in the show’s title. However, it’s not exactly true for you. Your name is actually Carl Lucas. But I decided it’s less the name you are born with and more what you go by. Marge Simpson wasn’t born a Simpson, but she gets in, and since everyone calls you Luke, I figure you count. Anyways, because of this ambiguity, you will cop as Neutral. Super Strength and Bulletproof: I couldn’t decide if your base power should be offensive or defensive, so I decided to use both. At night, you can use your strength to role block or your bulletproof skin to protect a team mate. You cannot do both, however, so decide carefully which is more useful.
Info: You are Kara Danvers, also known as Kara Zor-El, played by Melissa Benoist on the show Supergirl. The cousin of the more famous Superman, you were sent to Earth when your planet died, just as he was. When you arrived, however, he had already grown up and didn’t require your guidance, so you started a life of your own with the Danvers family. But just like your cousin, your heroic side could not be supressed, and soon enough, you followed in his footsteps to become Supergirl.
Powers:
DEO: You are this games Serial Killer, but it feels wrong to call you that, as you are the definition of hero, so you are a Serial Capturer. Each night, you must capture a player, putting them into DEO custody and removing them from the game. This has a bonus effect of the people you capture not actually being dead, and thus cannot be revived, if someone in this game has a power that could do so. All the powers of Superman: Okay, so as a Kryptonian, you are pretty damn powerful, and have a lot of things you can so. Let’s explore some of them.
Bulletproof: You are immune to night kills. This is automatic, does not need to be activated with an action.
Super speed: You get to take 2 actions each night, one must be the capture, the other can be one of your other abilities.
Strength, freeze breath, heat vision, x-ray, etc: Your second action may be used to block, misdirect or track your targets. Whichever will benefit you (or help you build an alibi).
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
Anyone targeting her would track/block/misdirect only the second power. Her capture power was unaffected by all those and didn't appear in Reverse Tracks. As is well known, I like strong Serial Killers
Info: You are The Doctor… hold up. Wait a sec. The doctor has been used before, hasn’t he? Well… technically, yes. But the last time I used the Doctor, it covered Eccleston, Tennant and Smith. Since then, a new doctor has emerged and so I felt I could use the character again. You are the Peter Capaldi version of the Doctor from the most recent incarnation of Doctor Who. Once again an older Doctor, your new persona is a bit darker than the previous few have been. But darker doesn’t mean evil. You still care, in your own way.
Powers:
Companion: The Doctor always needs a companion. On Night 1, your power is to choose someone to mason with the rest of the game. Since you are Neutral, it does not matter at all if they are town, mafia or neutral like you. Your win condition will be tied to your companion, so choose wisely. You will be given a new power, depending on who your companion is after the first night. Post restriction: You get to break one of the essential rules of mafia. You can edit your posts. In fact, you must, at least once per day. Preferably after enough time has passed so that “edited by” tag appears. The post you edit doesn’t need to be from that day, it can be from any day, but you cannot edit the same post twice. Because you know the danger of visiting your own time line. Your companion can do this too. If you change anything vital (like, say, a vote), please inform me via PM. Master of Time and Space: Once and only once this game, you may go back in time and change a night’s worth of actions. This is a night power. It is used before the night in question ends I will tell you, and only you, all the important stuff that was supposed to happen. Stuff like Player X died, the cop found a town, the tracker learned nothing of importance, etc. Then, every player must resubmit a new and different action for that night. Only you will know the results of what was meant to happen that night.
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
He gained the win condition of his companion and the opposite of whatever their power was. For balance. So if he targeted a tracker, he'd be a RT, if his companion was a blocker, he's be a guide, etc.
Liked the editing restriction and the one shot he never got to use. Alas.
Info: You are Frank Gallagher, played by William H. Macy on the American version of the show Shameless. Shameless was one of those shows I’ve been meaning to watch for years. Then it was on my Netflix list for months. Finally, I got around to it and became addicted. It follows the Gallagher family, which has got to be one of the more dysfunctional families on TV. You are Frank, the patriarch who is more or less detested by all of his offspring. Lazy, selfish and usually inebriated, you are the definition of a screw up. Still, no matter how bad things get, you never really learn your lesson and can always find a way to make them worse.
Powers:
Distrustful: You do not trust practically anyone. Especially the government, the police, or any authority figure. Kinda makes you perfect for mafia, doesn’t it? You are the town cop. Drinking Buddy: Somewhere in this game is another character who is also a heavy drinker. I am telling you nothing about them. Not, player, character or even alignment. They might even be mafia. Or not. Anyways, it’s always better to have someone else to drink with, right? At the start of each night, you and the buddy will meet for a drink. You will always drink the same amount as eachother. On odd numbered nights, the drinks go on your tab (so you choose the amount of drinks, between 1 and 5) on even numbered nights, the buddy pays. You will always be told how many you had. How much you drink may change how your night goes. For better or for worse.
Info: You are Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage on the epic series Game of Thrones. I’ve been meaning to use Tyrion for ages. It’s almost unbelievable that I haven’t yet. He’s been on my shortlist of characters to use for ages and always gets cut. Truth be told, I nearly cut him again, but I’m glad I was able to find a place for him this time around. GoT is enough of a pop culture sensation, I am going to assume you know at least a little about the Imp. If not, what can I say? Despite his short stature and constantly being underestimated by his family, Tyrion has proved multiple times over that what he lacks in height, he makes up for in intelligence and cunning, and he can play the game with the best of them.
Powers:
Playing the game: As the cleverest character on the show, you just seemed the natural fit for the cop role. You can determine players’ alignments. Drinking Buddy: You’re also known to enjoy a drink or two. Somewhere in this game is another character who is also a heavy drinker. I am telling you nothing about them. Not, player, character or even alignment. They might even be mafia. Or not. Anyways, it’s always better to have someone else to drink with, right? At the start of each night, you and the buddy will meet for a drink. You will always drink the same amount as eachother. On even numbered nights, you pay for the drinks (so you choose the amount of drinks, between 1 and 5) on odd numbered nights, the buddy gets to pick. You will always be told how many you had. How much you drink may change how your night goes. For better or for worse.
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
2 cops? Yes, 2 cops. Kinda. Tyrion was a straight up cop, Frank was insane and always got the wrong result (saw town as mafia and mafia as town). Frank needed 3-5 drinks to function, Tyrion needed 1-3. If they both always picked 3, town would have had 2 cops every night. But the drinking mechanic and the reverse results for Frank made sure the 2 cops wasn't overpowered.
Info: You are Hugo Ryes (known better as Hurley), played by Jorge Garcia on the show Lost. It has been ages since I used a Lost character in my games. Mostly because I hadn’t seen the show in ages and never even finished watching it while it was on, giving up midway through season three. However, recently I had time to spare and Lost streams on Netflix, so I decided to rewatch the show in its entirety. Hurley is one of those characters that is always around, and always important, and yet somehow never really gets the limelight that Jack, John or even Kate does. But he’s kind, compassionate and the heart of the survivors.
Powers:
Island Protector: So, spoilers, but also, the show has been over for years, so I don’t feel bad. At the end of the series, Hurley is named the new island protector, in change of keeping it safe. A perfect role for him. The island is the location of this game, and your job is to protect the town. You are the doctor. Conversations with the Dead: Hurley has the power to speak with the deceased. At night, instead of doctoring, you may ask a question to one of the dead characters. Send me the question (something the character would know) and I will tell you what they answer. This power only works on the dead. If they are written up as missing, this power is ineffective. Also, once and only once, you may use the power to bring a dead player back to life. Because it’s your island and you get to make up the rules.
Info: You are Lt. John Sheppard, played by Joe Flanigan on the spin off series Stargate Atlantis. I’m going to be honest here, I did not enjoy Atlantis nearly as much as SG1. I finished SG1, and enjoyed it for the most part, so decided to give Atlantis a try, but it never quite grabbed me. It took me over a year to watch the 5 seasons as I kept losing interest, and then coming back to it. But I eventually watched the whole series, and thus, decided to include it here. Following a similar format to the original show and John is a familiar archetype: military leader and morally strong hero.
Powers: Stargate: With access to the Stargate and the ability to leave people off world when need be (to get rid of them or for their own protection), it just makes sense to make you the town jailkeeper.
Info: I 100% don’t expect you to know who this is. I’m pretty sure no one in this game will. Q and A is an Australian political talk show. Each week, they have a panel consisting of politicians (from both major parties), journalists, activists and well spoken celebrities. They are asked question by the audience about current issues in Australian politics and are given a chance to debate. Discussion is fair, both sides being given a chance to talk and things rarely get out of hand. This is mostly due to host Tony Jones, who moderates the discussion, cutting people off if needed, directing the conversation and keeping things on track. This is a weekly show, not just during elections and covers all kinds of topics. Recent episodes have focused on immigration, agriculture, influence of the media and marriage equality. It is smart, fair to both sides and almost always civil. Something I’ve enjoyed watching since moving to Australia.
Powers:
Moderator: As a moderator to sometimes heated debate, you know when to cut someone off who is not being productive. You are the town role blocker. Refocusing Conversation: Sometime things go off topic, and it’s your job to restart to conversation. Once this game, if you think the town is going down the wrong track, you can reset the day phase. Post in bold “Let’s get back to the question at hand” and all current votes will be cancelled and the time in the day phase will be reset to 0. This can be used to stop a bad lynch or give the town a redo if they are wasting a day.
Info: You are Maeby Funke, played by Alia Shawkat on the series Arrested Development. Maeby is the last of the Arrested Development main cast that hasn’t appeared in one of my games yet. So it was only a matter of time before I found a spot to fit her in. The child of Lindsay and Tobias, you seem to want nothing more than for your parents to notice you. However, you don’t always (or even ever, really), pick healthy ways to do so. Be is kissing your cousin or failing school on purpose, you are self destructive to achieve your goal.
Powers:
Manipulation: Whether tricking people into giving you money by faking a handicap or getting a job in a film studio you have no qualification for, your skills of manipulation are developing nicely. If only you didn’t sometime get caught up in your own lies. You are the town’s misdirector. You also have a high chance of appearing in the write up while doing this, so you may be able to get some info on your target from that.
Info: You are Artie Abrams, played by Kevin McHale on the show Glee. Glee is one of the mainstays of this game series. I’ve used many character already, but with an ensemble cast like this, there are still lots more I can use. I’m kinda going through the original cast first, which is why I am using Artie now, as opposed to other characters I like better (like Blaine, Santana, Sam, etc.) Truth be told, Artie is actually one of my least favourite characters. I mostly found him annoying and didn’t particularly enjoy any of his songs. But hey, he is one of only 5 characters to be a main role in all 6 seasons, so I can’t deny his importance.
Powers:
Filmographer: Artie is shown throughout the show to have talent behind the camera, so in this game, you will be recording the events as they take place, and may even catch something incriminating on film. You are the reverse tracker. You can learn the names of everyone that targeted your target at night.
Info: You are Quinn Morgendorffer, voiced by Wendy Hoopes, on the animated series Daria. It has been ages since I included a Daria character, but for his last birthday I bought my partner the entire series on DVD and we rewatched them, so it has inspired me to go back to that show and use someone else from it. With Daria and Jane already having been used, next up is Quinn. Quinn is Daria’s sister and the two could not be less alike. Quinn is shallow, popular, materialistic and boy crazy. But she is also surprisingly smart when she needs to be and her dynamic with Daria is one of my favourite parts of the show.
Powers:
Vice President of the Fashion Club: Fashion is your life. You cannot leave the house without looking super cute and know exactly what to wear and what everyone else should be weaning. You are a clue cop. But instead of the normal cryptic clues, your clues will come in the form of critiquing the fashion of the other players. Knowing what they are wearing can help figure out who they are.
You also have a post restriction. Because your posts must also be super cute. You must always post in some shade of pink or purple.
Info: American Horror Story is interesting to use in this game because the actors change roles every season. Since the show is up to 6 seasons, that means each actor (if they have always been present) has had 6 roles. This game, you are representing the various roles played by Even Peters. To start, you are falsely convicted mental patient Kit Walker, lobster boy Jimmy Darling and impulsive actor Rory Monahan. Each character will have a different power you can pick from at night, depending who you want to be. Each power must be used before being allowed to repeat.
Powers:
Kit Walker: A man able to sneak around when need be, you are a tracker. Jimmy Darling: Protective of all your friends, you are a doctor. Rory Monahan: A decently good actor, you are a misdirector. Life After Death: You have two lives. More info on this after you come back.
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
Even Peters’ other three roles are all character whom have died already. So you get to come back as the other three now. Troubled teen ghost Tate Langdon, Frat boy zombie Kyle Spencer and serial killing ghost James Patrick March. Because I don’t want you to have to kill if there are no viable options, you do not have to use these powers equally, as you did with the living powers.
Powers:
Tate Langdon: A ghost that kept his eye on everyone, you are a reverse tracker. Kyle Spencer: Simplistic but strong, you are a role blocker. James Patrick March: A sadistic serial killer both in life and death, you are a vigilante and can make kills.
Info: You are Emma Duval, played by Willa Fitzgerald on the show Scream. Now, I know Scream isn’t a very good show. It’s not well acted or written and it’s often predictable. But my last term break I had two weeks off and so I watched it just as something to have on. It takes the basic premise of the movie, a serial killer stalking a group of high school students. And you are the final girl, the trope of the last survivor whom all the chaos revolves around.
Powers:
Final Girl: Surviving is what you do. That is your power. You are really good at avoiding death, so you are much harder to kill than most other players in the game. Good thing too, because if the final girl dies, then the world gets turned upside down. You are also a Princess. Should you die, the next day phase will be skipped.
As a side note, I don’t normally like purely defensive roles, with no active power, but Emma is mostly a reactionary character, so it fits.
Info: You are Eleven (sometimes just called Elle), played by Millie Bobby Brown on the Netflix original series Stranger Things. A mysterious girl who appeared out of nowhere, not only were you quiet in a stern and scary kind of way, you also have powers. Telekinetic power. Using them causes your nose to bleed, but you get better at them every day and when in trouble, and by downright terrifying. Not bad for a young girl in a pink dress.
Powers:
Telekinesis: You are the town’s vigilante. You can use your powers to kill if need be, in defense of the town. The silent type: You have a post restriction. Eleven doesn’t talk much. Each of your posts is limited to only 11 words maximum. No more. Talk to the point and concisely. Or just double post if you really need up to 22 words. You are not limited to how many posts you can make, just how long those posts can be.
[b]Info: You are Claire and Phil Dunphy, played by Julie Bowen and Ty Berrell in the show Modern Family. One of the few sit-coms I still watch, Modern Family is still one I enjoy. The premise is simple, exploring what a family can mean in this day and age. You are Claire and Phil, the parents of the most traditional nuclear family on the show. Parents of three, Phil is silly while Claire is stern but between them they have a healthy relationship and a happy family.
Powers:
Two parent family: Since you are two characters, you are a double voter. Minivan: What’s a family in the suburbs without a minivan? I’m making you a bus driver in this game. You can switch two players around, reversing how targets each. You may not target yourself with this. Whenever I allow that it causes nothing but headaches.
Info: You are Claire Underwood, played by Robin Wright on the Netflix original, House of Cards. They say that behind every great man is a greater woman. While I’m not convinced that’s true, it may be the case here. Your husband Frank may be the President of the United States, but you have political aspirations. Not happy with simply being the First Lady, you can manipulate behind the scenes as well as your husband, to get what you want. What’s best for him and, above all, what’s best for yourself.
Powers:
The Art of Manipulation: Getting people to do what you want them to do? Easy for someone as intelligent and savvy as yourself. You are a controlled misdirector. You can reroute someone into targeting who you would like them to target.
Info: You are Bela Talbot, played by Lauren Cohan in the show Supernatural. I always thought Bela had a bad wrap. She was only in a single season of the show, and I liked her character. A thief and con artist who was often one step ahead of the Winchesters, I like the character. But the general fan base did not and Bela was killed off later that season. Which I always through was a shame. I haven’t included a Supernatural character in ages, so I thought it was time to bring it back. It was originally going to be Crowley, but the role I really needed that I didn’t have a character for yet was tracker, and Bela just fits that better.
Powers:
Surveying your Mark: Any good con starts with recon. You are the town tracker. Thief: You are also a thief, so why not use that power as well. If you track the same person two nights in a row, you can also rob them that second night and steak something to gain a clue as to who they are.
Other things I did this game you may have noticed:
I tried to use characters from shows I haven't used in ages (Lost, Simpsons, Daria, Supernatural, etc) to show people that those are still valid claims. I can always revisit things.
I like post restrictions. Quinn, Eleven, the Doctor, etc. They just make things fun. I also liked my variation on the clue cop with Quinn. It was an interesting change to what I normally do.
