Without cards, I would say DC is favored, while with cards easily Marvel. In terms of a simple slugfest, I would say DC, since the dice odds are in his favor ofr the initiative. DC needs a 4 to hit, while Marvel needs 6. Of course this does really come down to the luck of the dice, especially for the map (as mention before). In terms of playability, still a tough call, as the DC one is much easier to heal, he can carry, outwit, and has mystics.
Now something to note, DC Ares's Mystics is no longer unavoidable, therefore making his TA almost as usless as his Marvel counterpart (for the most part, but you can still outwit armor). And no you can not shoot out of base contact.
I've read Kite-mans book.... at least the part on DC Are cooler sculpt. There were some other pages I glanced at and.... all I can say is ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. That darn ABC Sports theme music comes to mind..... thrill of victory, agony of defeat type stuff.
There's a hella good Sandman vs. Sandman chapter ('Exit Light!').
I was admittedly a bit long-winded in my Captain Marvel vs. Captain Marvel chapter (entitled 'Get Away From Billy!'), but the most exciting thing is indeed the video that actually plays when you open the cover...
Nice review. To me, the two big differences are the fact that Marvel is grounded, DC is not - gives him a little more mobility IMO as Lockjaw can Doubletime him across the board. Also - Marvel can be boxed up in a way DC can't. Thanks to T-bolts, Marvel can be a Mystics if he wants, or MoE, or Suicide Squad...etc.
Not to mention the special power: DC is saddled with CCE on those clicks, while Ares can use his boost as a sub for either CCE or RCE - except that he can target two figures.
For me this all adds up to a Marvel Victory as far as playability goes.
In a one on one match it all comes down to the roll of the dice.
These are all good points, but I have just one question:
When are you finally gonna reveal to us WHO the #### that is in your avatar??

DC Ares is still the true God of War.
Oh, and sir, the Mystics TA damage is still unavoidable.
I think the new phrase for it is "takes damage" as it is really different for "dealt damage" (the one that triggers damage reducers).
I have read it somwhere in the Rules Of Combat thread. I hope a Veteran player or judge comments on my interpretation just to be 110% sure as I am not a Judge.

I'm 99% sure I read this too.. clarification would be nice

Granted, rules have changed a few times, so I may be wrong on this, but it seems to me that DC would win each time if everyone hits on rolls, as long as DC bases Marvels immediately, and then does after giving up the first hit to Marvels, uses Flurry. Flurry can be used against 1 opponent correct? If so, then he hits Marvel for 4 clicks 2x. Or is this not allowed?

It is allowed, but three things to consider:
1) DC Ares had better remember to Outwit Marvel Ares' Super Strength. Otherwise the first hit will be for 7 points, not just 5 (wacking the DC figure right past Flurry).
2) Closing to an intermediate position where you can later Phase in 12 squares to base without being within the 13 square Marvel Ares run & gun range will be tricky. Even then with a 10 movement the Marvel figure will probably still have the option of moving to another position to foil the setup - while possibly widdling away at the terrain that makes the DC's safe approach possible.
3) If the Marvel Ares takes the chance of a break away Running Shot after being based and pulls it off, you're back to the "Marvel shoots first and wins" scenario. And since we're assuming everyone is making their rolls (otherwise the Marvel Figure is usually up the creek - and even the DC could be, when he has to take that post Phasing base push to Flurry and bumps up against a lucky Impervious roll), you could likewise assume the break away succeeded.
How can ppl say that DC Ares is better? DC Ares sucked when he originally came out and he hasn't gotten any better since then. I have never lost to a DC Ares team. He has no up-front move and attack powers, he is completely useless against stealth teams, he is always vulnerable to psychic blast (since he is a flyer, even if he bases the PBer he can still be shot by the PBer) and with only one target he is vulnerable to swarm teams.
Saying all that, the DC version would (and should) regularyly win a 1v1 battle with the Marvel version. The Marvel version has a TA that is worthless in a 1v1 battle. Also, the Marvel version has an extra arrow that it can not use in a 1v1 battle so it is spending points on worthless abilities in a 1v1 battle. Now those abilities are VERY useful when you him on a team with feats and other characters.

Wow, everyone is comparing these two as a 1 on 1 vs only.. hah

Great review! I personally like the DC one a lot better, because with that Mystics your opponent sometimes doesn't know how to go at it right away. But the Marvel will be fun on that 3000 point Mighty Avengers team.
