Well it's not just dice. Strategy does make a difference. But if the dice decide they hate you, there's really nothing you can do about it.
That nice high roll you just made with Steve is actually enough for a capture. According to the RPSC rules: "If a hero is captured by a villian team, it is up to the editor to decide what effect (if any) that will have."
