I find it baffling how someone can play a 500 point tournament and go 3-0 while scoring around 100 points a game.
Do you guys score figures or victory points differently? I've never seen 3 games where the scores are so low and I saw at least 8 of them posted here.
We score games per the standard rules. We have large turn-outs at our venue, and sometimes even though I go 3 wins and 0 losses, I come in second place because another player went 3 wins as well but outscored me. This doesn't always happen, sometimes I'm first, some times I'm second. Or sometimes we have a small turnout and only one person goes 3 and 0.
I'm just a very cautious and tactical player. I rarely over-extend myself, and I take what my opponent gives me. I try to control the map as much as I can and dictate how and when my opponent can even attack me.
As you can see by my results and scores, in most cases, even though I don't score much, I allow very little victory points, if any, in return.
If I'm playing a team and/or an opponent I know will outgun my team, I'll destroy an object for 5 victory points and run the whole game, only attacking if it is tactically in my favor.
Or I may camp out on elevated terrain with a close-combat team and pass every turn until my opponent, with his ranged team, jumps on the elevated terrain, and then commence to wipe his team.
I value character placement very highly, and I usually come up with some pretty bizarre, but very effective tactics.
In the end, I play pretty boring game, but I win, which is the goal at hand. When I quote gaming guru Sirlin it's not just lip service. He is my mentor and a good one. As he teaches, I play to win (most of the time). Looking at some of those team builds, you'll see that I play some pretty under-clased weak teams, but I also play some really brutal ones. I like to mix it up and play things I have never played yet.
I play HeroClix a lot like Tigran Petrosian played chess...
Chess Player: Tigran Petrosian, The Turtle (1929-84)
Petrosian was often criticized for his “boring” play. He paid careful attention to his pawn structure and rarely exposed himself with any kind of pawn weakness. He would stop his opponent’s attacks before they even started.
"With the initiative Petrosian often played like a python, squeezing and squeezing the victim until he was almost happy to resign. When the chances were balanced, Petrosian was like a mongoose deflecting every thrust." —Larry Parr, Outspoken Chess Player
My circles have a different animal-term for such a player: a turtle. The turtle takes no risks, and engages in no unnecessary action, much to the dismay of the spectators who always hate a turtle. Petrosian had these responses to his critics:
"Some consider that when I play I am excessively cautious, but it seems to me that the question may be a different one. I try to avoid chance. Those who rely on chance should play cards or roulette. Chess is something quite different." —Tigran Petrosian
"They say my chess games should be more interesting. I could be more interesting—and also lose." —Tigran Petrosian
His second response goes to the heart of the matter. Petrosian, and nearly all turtles, are simply trying their best to win given the particular situation and their own knowledge and skills. Petrosian did not win many tournaments, usually taking second or third place, but he was still regarded as nearly impossible to beat. Even turtles have their day, and in 1963 he won the World Championship from the top Soviet player Mikhail Botvinnik.

(Special) Grenade Type(s): Flashbang (no damage): The target square for this grenade can be within 8 squares. Place an action token on all hit characters that have zero tokens. Frag (2 damage): A hit character in the target square is dealt 1 additional damage. Each other hit character is knocked back from the target square.
(Attack) Double Pistol Whip: Spartan can use Flurry. After any of Spartan's ranged combat actions resolve, if Spartan is within 3 squares of a character targeted during that action, place him adjacent to that character and he can use Flurry as a free action with a locked damage value of 1.
(Damage) SAP-HP Ammo: When a character would be dealt damage by Spartan's ranged attack, roll a d6; on a result of 5 or 6, the damage dealt by the attack is penetrating damage.

How many players at your venue play with this style?
After a game do the opponents enjoy the game? I mean, win or lose, do they relish games like this? Do you hear, "Oh man, great game! I'll get you next time" because I would imagine you'd just hear an audible groan when match-ups are declared. Especially as the lowest winner (due to points) you usually would be facing the weakest winners / best losers.
It's interesting you have large turnouts as I would think many players would rather stay home. For me, getting to play in a tournament is a sacrifice of time and takes effort. I know that is true of a lot of players, between work, school and family. How many players are there on average and how many for major tournaments ( like IG is for many venues).
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.

There is one other player that is a turtle. He's a really good player (Stryphe Grimm), and he doesn't lose often. He is a huge Cap fan so he has a different Captain America every week. He rotates through all of them.
Then we have another player that I'd classify as a 'staller') - I know that isn't a word, but the best description I can give him. He takes forever on his turns and hopes in the end he can push and take a figure out. He is a good player, but I can often beat him more than he beats me. I just question stalling as a valid tactic, since it may be illegal.
I'm a turtle, but I never stall. I know stalling used to be illegal, but I don't see anything about it in the newest version of the 2011 Comprehensive Tourney Guide.
On a regular basis, the main venue I play at (I play at multiple venues... a lot in my area)... there are, on a weekly average 10-14 players a week. For a big event, we push about 18-24 players for the IG Events, etc.
Today I went to another venue for an NCA-sponsored Faction Warfare III tourney. Competition there is very stiff. A few of the people their have been in the top 10 in Worlds. I went 2 and 1 there today. I had a chance to win my first game, but couldn't pull it out... and I went against a very competent player who played a lot like me... limit your opponent's attacks while maximizing yours, turtle, and take what is given to you. He had a S.H.I.E.L.D. team led by the HoT Cap. It was a fun game, and my first ever loss with the Master Chief. I had his Cap half-way down his dial, and the Falcon on his last two clicks, and both S.H.I.E.L.D. figures were KO'd... but he did a great job handling my team, and wiped me out. The map he chose really hurt me too (Train Station map from Mighty Maps).. that map really helped Cap, and slowed be down a bit.
To answer your second question: I get a lot of "Great games," "Thanks for a good game,", etc... because I'm a very friendly and outgoing person and sportsmanship is extremely important to me. During a game I never brag or boast when winning, and never complain or whine when I'm losing.
Now do people enjoy actually playing me? I'm not sure, but I would doubt some of them do. They know if they are going to beat me, they must earn it. I'm very competitive and when I lose, my opponent earns it. Rarely do I just 'give' a game to my opponent. We are three months into the year, and I've only given up 5 losses.

(Special) Soul Gem: In-Betweener may begin the game with the Soul Gem attached to his base by paying its point cost. This object does not count toward your object total and is scored and removed from the game when In-Betweener is KO'd. In addition to its normal effects, modify In-Betweener's defense value by +1 if the Soul Gem is attached.
(Speed) The Source of Magic: In-Betweener deals 2 unavoidable damage instead of 1 unavoidable damage when using the Mystics team ability.
(Damage) Polar Opposite Attack: As a free action, choose an opposing character within range and line of fire. Until your next turn, In-Betweener may use all standard powers and combat abilities that character can use as long as that character is on the map.
