I think anything since Supernova, if not anything that Seth designed (with the possible exception of Armor Wars) still holds up pretty well. They lack special powers, but the stats are still great. After that, it really depends. There are a lot of great starting clicks that make figures useful, but the stats drop is what really kills them.
While the stats drop really hurts primary attackers, there are a lot of figures that are still great as secondary attackers or support pieces. The longer dials really make for some great tie-up pieces.
As for specific figures, CJ V Green Arrow is still one of my favorite trick shot figures. HT V Robin is another favorite. I also still use a lot of the PD characters from Unleashed.
Here's another shout out to my favorite "Golden Age" figure - Unleashed KC Superman. I can't remember having lost a game with him on the team (though he works better in higher point formats, true.)
Even in a tentpole team, KC Supes is very pushable and just a beast to deal with. I took out a 500 point team that had among its members SI Doctor Strange, FF Starter Mister Fantastic, and SI Namor. (Granted, making most if not all of my Impervious roles tipped the balance in my favor.)

I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this, but thought it was interesting.
I just filed all the clix I had in my "recently used, now put these away" box, accumulated over the last 6 weeks or so.
I put away figures from almost every set. The only sets that didn't have at least one figure put away:
Hypertime
Indy
Ultimates
Mutant Mayhem
City of Heroes (but did have a CoV character)
GLC
Icons
Danger Room
2099 (but had a feat)
Hellboy
Mutations and Monsters
And of those sets, I've used figures from those not long before those six weeks. Icons, Mutations and Monsters, GLC, Ultimates and Mutant Mayhem in particular.
The-pre-card sets that were best represented were Collateral Damage, Icons, and Armor Wars.
While most of these old sets sit idle, each set (except Hypertime maybe!) has something I'll reach for now and then, and most of them have a few.
AW Unique Spider- man can hold his own
LG Vet Batman and lunge work great
Of course there is Sup's Robots that are great.
MM Vet sable
My favorite is UL. Vet the punisher and Days of future past Wolverine there still super great figures to use
If you wanted me to rep you, then you could have just asked nicely. However, I like your style.
Hey, wintremute, would you rep me? Pretty please? With sugar on top? Thanks.
On topic, there are easily hundreds of pre-Avengers units that I think still hold up great (I'm actually not a big fan of the Avengers set itself, amusingly enough), and a number of them have already been named.
Indy set U Hellboy is great with the right team (a mystic is great, and a defending piece seals it).
IC LE Victor Creed is still perfectly solid for his points (I used him in a 300pt Golden Age tournament with my next mention recently, and he tore it up).
Ul U Magneto (the one with the cape) is still very solid, particularly in Golden Age with Contingency Plan ("He still has leadership!?!"). Early game maneuvering with TK, followed up with some heavy handed ranged attacks mid- to late- game make him a stud.
Sv REVLE Kang/Nathaniel Richards are still very dangerous in either format.
Sv RE Tessa/Sage is still a top notch support piece.
There are plenty of others, but those were the first to jump out of my head.
OK, I don't care what anyone says, (V) Hellboy is an awesome piece. Probably not the strongest there is, but I like him and want to play him in the next tourney.
Smaug: "My wingspan will blot out the sun!"
Thorin: "Then we will fight in the shade."
A few figs that I think still hold up from every set (pre LOSH/avengers):
Infinity Challenge:
V-Firelord - Say what you want.. That AV and defense are still competitive in today's game.. He has a glass jaw sure.. but with so many pieces having lowish AV's.. he's still a strong sub 100 pt piece.
R-Black Panther - Even if stealth isn't as scary, he's still a cheap as dirt first click outwiter for an avengers theme team..
Hypertime:
R-Hawk - 45 points of pain (though he needs some help getting to click 2..)
V-Clayface, decent AV' good moveme annoying.. Good for a Bat Enemy TA for 50pts
Clobbering Time:
V-Doctor Doom - Nothing has come close to being the wild card abuser that this guy is.
U-Spiral - Flurry + BcF.. Yes please
V-Logan - Still one of the best interpretations of Wolverine in my opinion, and very nicely priced.
U-Nightcrawler - still very very capable.
Xplosion:
E-Taskmaster, still a piece that has a lot of things going on for him to make him rather scary even now. He's capable of dome decent damage for a relatively low cost, good AV to start, and a wild card abuser none the less..
V-Silver Samruai, he's like the perfect 2nd string attacker.. Capable of dealing decent damage, good Av, and annoying with that high move phasing.. 40 pts? nice..
V-Ironman - haha.. just kidding and making sure you're paying attention.
Indy:
V-Shi - An EXCELLENT piece well worth picking up.. one of the MOST annoying b/c/f characters ever.. not only is she in stealth and not only does she have super senses, and basing her risks you taking 6 damage thanks to the blades.. but she's got 8 range.. so staying away from her isn't always easy either.. and at 47 points.. an INCREDIBLE attack piece.
V-Johnny Alpha - What? An indy set piece without b/c/f?? nice.. He provides nice support for your team (and safety for himself with Ss and stealth). Ontop of that he's a capable second string attacker for 64 points.. Not too bad!
Cosmic Justice:
V-Deathstroke - Still a low priced Nasty support piece.. You get some first click outwit, some capable attack values, decent defense, willpower.. 58 points.. still ok with me, and still arguably better (for the value) than the new one.
Critical Mass:
LE- Sarah makes a nice life battery for the x-men team who is capable in her own right to help clean up.
E or V Moonknight - Both ar elow cost pieces that are capable of being more trouble than they are worth to kill for their incredibly low point costs.. E I think slightly edges out the V with his avengers TA and Super strength.
LE Major Christopher Summers - a low cost LE that does just enough to make him irritating. Not a game breaker, but great (and still great) for 39 points.
Unleashed:
EV-Black Adam - Don't care what you say anyone who can come in and nail you for 5 relatively easy (Even with low defense) is a threat.. The low defense makes it easy to field an old school medic and heal him too.. something most new pieces can't claim.
EV-Green Lantern - Still a ranged combat pain!
U-KC Superman - The original terror!
Ultimates:
So many to list here.. So no explanations..
EV-Captain America, V-Spiderman, V-Blackwidow, REV - Hawkeye, REV Hellcat, Xorn (still the best healer with offensive capabilities too!), LE Justice is Served (Awesome AWESOME harassing attacker! If you don't have one.. go get one!), Morlock LEader, Daniel Ketch
Mutant Mayhem:
V-Skullbuster - yet another low cost attacker that's pretty capable.
V-Vertigo - 3 target incap with decent AV.. plust perplex.. not bad!
V-Deadpool - even without toughness up front he's incredibly hard to kill.. the change to the perplex rule made it even worse (+def!)
U-Longshot- yet another cheap harassament utility piece that's hard to get rid of..
U-Loki - Very competitive still, Good movements good mix of powers nice damage.. a big pain for 160 pts.
City of heroes/Villains
All are pretty good (well almost all) but the two stand outs are Ghost widow - decent AV, ridiculous defense, support, phasing, flier... regen... 54 points.. still good. And the seldom noticed Captain Mako.. Another nice cheap annoying damage dealer.
Legacy:
V-Persuader - Great AV, Charge, EW, Great DEfense, wildcard.. 129 pts.. Definitely still good!
V-Batman - outclassed by some of the newer batmen, he's still a darn good piece for his price and likely to give your opponent headaches.
U-Ares - Still a beast.. Enough said
Fantastic Forces:
REV Iron fist- Gives plenty of options all of which are quite capable of giving your opponent a headache.
V-Dr. Strange - A toolbox of powers with plenty of potential for a decent price.
LE-Cain Marko - Best juggernaught yet
LE-Sue Storm - Still a pain to deal with, and pretty well mandatory for an FF team.
Icons:
V-Superman - pretty well single handededly forced a re-assessment of Hss.. Still a darn good character...
EV-Robin are both still good pieces
U-Flash - still quite capable..
Armor Wars:
V-War Machine - Still a solid and consistent performer
V-Ironman - Still completely reasonably costed and capable of being useful from first to last click.
U-Magneto- Still puts up some great numbers and decent from start to finish..
U-Spiderman - Great all around.. a good version of spidey in my opinion.. Still good by today's standards.
Collateral Damage:
E-Dr. Mid-Nite - Antoher low cost utility pieces.
LE-Superman Robot - Great for 100 pts
LE-Batman Ally Superman - A superman that has stealth for his whole dial... Yikes.. Point cost is up there, but he offers possibly more survability thanks to HSS+stealth+impervious than most other pieces.
Sinister:
Mach-4- another nast 100 pt piece..
U-Wolverine - Very tough nicely costed version of wolverine (that doesn't leave damage up to chance at least at the start).
U-Nick Fury - Brings a lot to the table for the 63 point cost to be honest.
Danger Room, Days of Future Past, and Giants:
Nothing in either of these sets really stand out.. The Danger Room gives some nice cheap harassment, but nothing too stand out.
Invincible:
Invincible and Omni-Man are still pretty tough. Invincible probably having held up better since he's so much lower a point cost.
Green Lanterns
Tomar Re with that 12 range and 18 defense and decent damage and running shot.. He's pretty tough. Don't be afraid to push him to click 2!
Supernova:
Yikes lots here too.. Just names again!
V-Night Trasher, REV-Kang, R-Ant-man, REV-Vision, REV Drax, Ev-Hyperion, REV Silver Surfer,REV Thor, U-Karnak, U-Korvac, U-thanos, LE Norrin Radd, The Zombies, Silver Centurion Ironman
2099:
Hulk - another Beast when you have a team supporting him
Ravage - Cheap pain dealer..
Origin:
I'll go out and say.. Just about every piece here is still 100% competitive with the current game.
Hellboy:
No real standouts.. Hellboy is still decent for the cost I suppose. But definitely nothing that REally stands out as a must have on my team..
Shew.. What a long post..
