View Poll Results: Which HeroClix comic license did better in 2014?
The correct option for such an opinion is to not vote.

The article, and corresponding poll, are specifically for the Big Two comic licenses.
This is just my opinion, but 2014 was a pretty shabby year for 'otherClix', especially when compared to 2013. I liked several of 2014 Tolkien figures, but sadly that series ends with a whimper. The Yu-Gi-Oh delays have hopelessly hurt impressions of that set.
I must say it has been a strange year if you think about it. How many supermen, wonder women, batmen, thors, wolverines, ironman, captain America's did we get this year. As far as I know we got a single superman and superboy, no wonder women, no batmen, no thors. IIronman still got made in gotg. If I had to give it to one or the other, it would go to DC for the simple fact that so many never before seen figures were clixed. I will say that the wol chases were something I actually preferred being hard to get, more satisfying completing them. Marvel had some strong showings, but when you release a movie set back to back with alternate versions of the same characters, you fail in my book... it is a little nuance, but enough of an issue to lose them the title.
I went with Marvel because this was a year in which WK went all-out to give me 'Clix versions of fun characters from oddball corners of Marvel U. I cleaned up with a Killraven, for cryin' out loud! They made a Sleepwalker! Inhuman goodness!
This was a great year for clix in general, but for me, DC takes the cake. They gave us better villains in SLoSH and the Flash, a better event with WOL, and less of the same old faces. I mean, there was absolutely no Batman or Wonder Woman taking up someone's spot in a set this year.
I think DC just held the spotlight for most of the year due to War of Light. The excitement leading up to the event, then the six months (usually more like seven or eight depending on how late your prize kits were) of the games, and then all the dust settling with final "Light" related days.
Since I had zero interest in playing DC stuff for months on end, it did nothing for me. However, it got me way more into the Guardians set than I would have otherwise been. When Flash was released and I saw the dials, there didn't seem to be a lot I wanted to play with either.
I've drawn the conclusion that not only do I prefer Marvel characters, but also enjoy the play mechanics of their sets more. Maybe that's an unconscious bias, however, it does seem that way even when comparing similar pieces from each universe.
In any other year, I think the sets put out for either publisher would win it, but for it to happen at the same time? Is this, despite the hiccups along the way, a banner year for comics-based clix?
I'm a Marvel guy at heart, and the number of characters I had wanted made or remade appearing in GotG, DoFP and Deadpool (DEADPOOL! and I can't stand Deadpool!) just blew me away. Quirky oddballs, unusual Cosmics, and my new favorite Wolverine and Nightcrawler (along with Franklin Richards in some form or another)... heck of a year.
But DC clix this year actually drew me into the comics they were based on. I've been reading up on the Rogues, I went back and read tons of Blackest Night stuff to fill in my knowledge gaps on the Lanterns... I had no idea who so many DC characters were this year and the clix themselves turned me into a fan.
If I have to pick a side, I'll give the edge (despite my Marvel heart) to DC with the tipping point being there is now a Jenny Sparks and her crew sitting on my office desk on display, but seriously, otherwise it's a coin toss for me. Actually looking at my display shelves right now, both companies are equally represented by a whole lot of 2014 characters we haven't seen much of before.
War of Light. Hoo boy.
War of Light was really a big deal, the biggest OP event to date. It brought nine new resources to the game, or one in nine different flavors depending how you see it. Dozens of previously unclixed characters, and powerful renditions of others. Completely game-changing figures like Weaponer, Sodam Yat and Kyle Rayner.
It also had the Entities, the perfect storm of a good idea combined with several bad ideas to make a horrible outcome.
Good: Entities are neat, I like pretty colors.
Bad: Rarity, Power for cost, Rarity, Insane utility, Rarity.
At War of Light I had a phenominal showing, I was like a force of destruction, and my total record for all WoL matches was 46/7. About 8 of those wins were surrenders either during or before the first round. I also managed to pull a total of seven entities during the event by the time it concluded, and used my trading skills to get a complete set. (I played at two venues, mind you.)
Sadly, I learned the meaning of the phrase "Even when you win, you lose." War of Light is filled with bad memories for me. WoL brought out the worst in players all over. One player who already had a bad attitude simply lost it at every War of Light event, even worse than he did at any other event he didn't do as well as he'd hoped. (To be fair, he also felt entitled to winning because he bought an Ion and used it with John Stewart religiously...) Worse, the venue allowed and endorsed the outbursts.
War of Light showed me some of the worst sportsmanship I've ever seen since I started playing this game. Players made threats over winning/losing, prizes, or when another player pulled a chase they wanted. A venue allowed specific, favorite players extra privileges, both in-game and out. Ugly stuff.
By month 3, I was tired of it.
By month 5, I was sick of it.
I stuck it out through 6 only to take home the Nekron I had been working towards, because it would have felt like a total waste if I didn't.
I may be in the minority here but I just can't stand any of the comic source material for War of Light, or as I call it, Rainbow Brite. It's just silly to me but that's me ...
I was already staying away from the Tournament Scene once Resources were introduced (Infinity Gauntlet Month 2 was last time I played) and I found that not only was I relieved but laughing aloud when I saw all the WoL Entity crap happening.
Then my buddy sent me a text picture a week or two ago of my old compadres playing a Flash Floor Match and low and behold, the winner was rocking a fully loaded power battery and Nekron and god knows what else and again, I was relieved and laughed at just how silly it has become ...
Anyways, I though Moped's comments here are just right on point and the feedback I was hearing was that the WoL Tournament Scene was getting chippy and above all as mentioned, brought out the uber-competitiveness in players that nobody wanted to see or be around ...

DC wins simply because the majority of OP was centered around DC releases (WoL in particular), and I tend to enjoy sealed a great deal.
I love the Authority, and that has definitely made Flash a set that I've enjoyed more than I expected. Deadpool and GotG were a lot of fun. SLoSH was the only set that didn't really move me, but enough of my friends are huge LoSH fans that I liked how much THEY enjoyed it.
DoFP was the best micro-set ever, and I've never been so happy that NECA *didnt* have the license to a movie before, as I prefer the original story. Nimrod's remake made my year.
Objective winner: DC
FanBoy vote: Nimrod (er, Marvel).
Although I am a definite Marvel fan, to the max, must give DC it's due. SLoSH was a very nice set, WoL was incredible, over the top, and the Flash set was over due and not too shabby!
Marvel almost got my vote solely because the opt-in was not as high as it was for DC. Marvel also had a TON of product drop this year, allowing folks to pick and choose their wants.
I had to go DC because it really was a game breaking year for them. Two solid 5-Figure sets in SLOSH and the Flash (the latter of which was possibly the best looking Heroclix set ever) allowed DC to have a much higher influx of characters in this calendar year than any I can remember.
As fun as Deadpool was, it was a kooky set that didn't seem to carry the weight of its counterparts over at DC. Couple that with a movie release that was "meh" and their "major" event just completely getting dwarfed by the "War of Light" drop and you have a victor.
Great year for DC 'clix, but more importantly, a fantastic year for the overall product itself.

I prefer to call them the Skittle Lanterns, but the sentiment is the same. How something can be so silly and so grimdark at the same time is beyond me.
And don't even get me started on how the "emotions" work with the lanterns/rings because they don't.
There are only a few days left on the poll. I am not surprised that a clear majority feels that the DC license did better in 2014; three full-sized sets covered a lot of territory for the Distinguished Competition.
I am surprised that there were a lot of comments along the line of "I don't know/care who the DC characters are." The Legion of Doom is probably the best know of all the DC villain assemblages, and there is a rather successful Flash series on television...so I don't think that there is any form of DC release that will sway folks of the Marvelous persuasion.
Looking ahead to 2015, I think that Marvel has got the clear advantage due to the upcoming Avengers Avalanche: A regular booster release, movie tie-ins, an OP storyline with ID cards that are sure to offer awesome stat/power bonuses to already beloved characters and a Marvel vehicle...that will be a lot for folks that love the Avengers! I'll be best swayed if the non-movie releases avoid the big names and dig deep into the properties like Avengers 1959, Avengers Academy, Young Avengers, Avengers A.I., etc. and fill out the Busiek era...even with remakes of the one-and-done characters of distant HeroClix past.
On the DC side, the Trinity War 'resource(s)' remind me (without knowing any details) of the Power Plant or Phoenix Force in several way...so this is either going to be a PITA to collect, or it's going to not offer as much as what players want, or both. No matter how useful it turns out, I doubt that it will impact force builds as much as the Power Battery, Book of the Skulls or Utility Belt.
Without an announced OP event for DC, and a very likely limit of two regular releases, the best I am hoping for is the introduction of still unclixed and poorly represented characters/teams. The Crime Syndicate is going to be a welcome addition to the villainous ranks of DC HeroClix; I can think of several more groups that need serious support. The Suicide Squad, Female Furies, and Wonder Woman's Pantheon could all fill many slots each in any given set, and there are many great team books that could still use some missing members.
