B4 I talk about the -ve points, i now give the positive points:
The JF mechs are fantastic sculp wise.
The 3 new SEs are well implemented and not overpowered
Now the bad point:
WHY WHY WHY DOES WIZTOPPS WANT TO GIVE MORE POWERFUL KICK-BUTT ARTY?!!?!?!? The paladins are insane, the SSw one NEVER Misses (look at the drift and you'll understand why) , the HL gives a new meaning to the term meat sheild and the liao one has 3 pogs. The long toms are insane as well, HARDENED ARMOR on an arty unit? Ultra high defence on snipers? Last time I could shoot the arty to death, now I have to kick the 22 defence 5 pts meat shield to death first.
More insanely powerful infantry. Infantry with higher defence and range than mechs? That is sooooo stupid.
Reuse of the giffin, koshi, panther and ocelot sculpts. The quality of these sculpts are simply bad. It is like they are made of even cheaper plastic than b4. Coupled with worse stats, like the koshis (and the cursed Flavio), this mechs are POO.
I can go on. But one thing I noticed today at my venue, the best player at my venue likes to FIELD AN ARTY WARRIOR ARMY. God forbid he use one during a tourney. I would utterly REFUSE to go against an army with 4 paladins , 4 mobile HQs , SSw Balacs and NO mechs. If he fields just 1 , that is right , JUST 1 mech, I would play with him.
I do not really expect to pull many useable Mechs out of boosters any more. I hope that they give us some new Mech rules soon, and not move-and-shoot. The DF Donar will still be better than most Mechs.
I am half-expecting to see them give us a mandatory "1 Mech per army minimum" rule, but that's a discussion for another time.
It's a real shame that the amazing sculpts, cool SE ideas, and new army types are being overshadowed by the weakness of the Mech units. I was wondering the other day if I should finally jump ship, and try out a new SF game of some kind. I have a hard time finding players in my area, though, and I really don't want to end up in the SW minis game (had enough of Star Wars, quite frankly).
I enjoy the current metagame. I actually like tankdrop, artillery, infantrydrop, and VTOLs. I just wish there was something that a Mech unit could add to my army - other than a big bull's eye.
And I don't think the Paladin arty is any stronger than the SS Arrow IV - except possibly the HL one.
Originally posted by KahnWolf The thing about Falcons Prey is that the mechs are only effective within the set, outside of the set almost no mechs that anyone would ever consider using. FP marquess are about the best thing for this game. FP is so balanced in and of itself, however outside the set only a few peices are going to be used.
WK needs to start desiging peices around the new set and the old sets, so that every peice from every set has a chance to see playability
I'd have to disagree somewhat with that. With Mech defenses being so low, and their ranges so short, they'll get eaten alive by infantry and vehicles a like, even if only using FP pieces. Sheesh, you can capture many of the mechs with a simple 7-8 infantry, you'll only need an 11-12 to cap it. Now toss in the shorter dials, and just shoot at it only needing an 8-9 from a single piece, and viola!
There are some okay mechs, but the majority of them are overpriced dreck.
They canNOT be that dumb at designing this stuff. It's been suggested that add-on cards to increase abilities will be released. Or move and shoot, also posted elsewhere. But absent any other evidence to change my mind, the mechs as released for use today, right this minute, are awful for the most part. I hope the 15th brings us SOMETHING to make sense out of the current paper mache' armor on mechs.
LE costs on infantry, 24-30 points?
To many vehicles with low life/range/defense-5 & 6 clicks/4" range/16 defense?
To many mechs with low life/range/defense-8 & 9 clicks/4" range/16 defense?
Poor quality control-lotsa mechs in pieces.
Two different scales-thought that wasn't 'sposed to happen any more.
Only good things about the set:
Last ICE machine! (finally!)
A coupla 16" & 0/14" ranges. (Not many are ballistic, though.)
I think the options we have to choose do not mean anything. If you want to know how the set is, ask them how they rate the set from 0-10. You are asking people to compair how the set is in relationship to how they thought the set was going to be.
I would rate the set as the worst set so far, but I would have to answer the question listed here as, better than I thought it was going to be. People can look at my answer to this question and think that I like the set, when actually I hate it!
I wish I had gotten to this post a bit sooner as most of my issues have already been put on the table.
Mechs in this set for the most part are way BeLOW average.
Arty in this set seems to be overpowered(again)
Infantry in this set are the saving grace for me. The sylphs rock and almost every piece of infantry in this set is useable.
The vehicles puzzle me a bit though. Once again we have some really powerful tanks. However the first thing I started really questioning is why are the transports as powerful if not more powerful that the MBT's?
Vtol's are very slightly toned down.
The sculpts are once again very beautiful, especially the newer JF inspired ones.
Does this make the expansion good in my eyes, not really sculpting is great for aesthetics and collectors, but not that important for players. The general BeLOW average stats for mechs are disheartening to me. That in my eyes makes this set very poor. The good things I outlined in this post are what brought my vote up to the below average/average area. But then I remembered the lack of my faction in this set and the ranking went straight to below average. I am holding out hope for the "PREPARE" discussion, but not really looking forward to it.
What's with the crappy defenses in this set? Overpriced, soft defensed mechs abound that invite chargemonkeying and discourage both intelligent gameplay and buying Falcon's Prey boosters for the fear of getting little more than expensive paperweight mechs.
...I also love the fact that my favorite faction got left out, yet SS gets more artillery units. Gee, thanks Wizkids.
