I sorta agree with the majority that the Artillerists (most notably **) and the EGM are the best regular and unique, respectively. You probably know all of this already, but I'm just gonna tell why they're bar none the best.
Artillerists:
1. 10-11 attack and multiple 3-damage clicks are always useful. (especially against, say, Invulnerability.)
2. They have a click of toughness, avoiding Rams, shake-off, and Venom strikes.
3. Regeneration! Free healing, and with low defense all the way, are perfectly compatitable with the Mending Priestess or EGM! (You know this already.)
Conversely, the ***Troll Gunner is also one of the best. At 52 points, he can deal four clicks at melee or ranged at an 11 attack (enough to KO *Shades, or any Imp or Volunteer), and is the second-cheapest 12"er at four clicks of damage. He also keeps four damage for five clicks. In fact, thanks to F/L, an average 15 defense, late Regeneration, and Toughness, he's probably better than uniques 15+ points more than him (i.e. Magus). And if you're with the AG, he can really hurt with those Suroks!
EGM:
1. Her 19 defend can cover about 8 or so figs. More than the standard six of, say, the Eldritch Draconum. Great for Conquest.
2. She has an effective 15" range, with a 10 attack. Didn't the ***Scorpem Gunner have that as well? We see him often, and he is almost as fragile! In desparate situations, use her to attack foes and weaken them. Weakening them to a 7-8 attack means that they have to get almost boxcars to nail your EGM.
3. She can regenerate on her 4th click to her starting click with a die roll of 6. Boo-yeah!
4. Shakeoff damage and easier breakaway because she is mounted. No free spin, but nobody's perfect...
You might complain about her lack of depth on her combat dial, but it's safe to say that if she were tougher, she'd be probably at least 20 points more expensive. In that case, I would just take the Elemental Priest instead. The rest of the EL uniques, in my opinion (except the Centaur Champion) kinda stink. Just protect the EGM all the way (you might have to sacrifice a weak figure to do so) and you should easily win.
Honorable mentions: The Woodland Sniper (the * is ONLY 13 points, and the tough is a control man's version of the Amotep Gunner) is one where you can't go wrong with any of 'em at any time. The Warbear is like a Blade Golem, except slightly better attack, defense, and Toughness. Sislith Trackers are similar to Scorpem Gunners, except that they also have Toughness (though no F/L). Elven Demi-Magi are useful for enchancement and chaining defense (because a 15 doesn't cut it). Isn't it funny that the EL guys are starting to get as good offensive pieces as the AG?
Since everyone is jumping on the artie bandwagon, I just wanted to reiterate a not often enough made point. Pretty much everyone who talks about the ariites also uses them with a Defend figure. So you may think you are getting a bargain, but any figure that requires specific support to get the most out of it is actually costing you more than the printed cost on the dial. That's one reason why the Chaos Mage isn't as good as he looks. Who plays him without at least a couple of Shaman? The arties are still good figures, but my *Warrior Sprite was solely responsible for defeating a Creator army in the Sinister Marqee. Let's see an artie pull that off!
The best EL unit in the ENTIRE game....is.....the * Crystal Sprite. This thing is a powerhouse. I cant believe that no one else said it. Maybe you guys just dont know your figures very well...
Thanks Altan for bringing that point up again. If you use a figure, but need another figure to make it useful its actually costing more.
Yes i have great respect for crystal sprites but they arent the best.
