For those of you jonesing for DBZ-gioh-ina-yu-face, SW, St and the rest - Go buy some of it on clearance.
In television there is a term called "jumping the shark." It's subjective term dealing with when a succesful series, with a viable formula, tries to do something "innovative" that in all actuality is the harbinger of it's demise. Named after the Happy Days episode on which Fonzie "jumped a shark" - I kid you not.
So you're idea of success for vs. is to take on properties that have already had their fans not support a ccg. Add a genre that is anathema to a number of players, quite possibly driving them off?
Comparing DBZ to Superman Like I said before would be like comparing George Bush or any current politician to George Washington.
One is a Legend an American Icon, and know around the world, and DBZ is yes well known, but joe Average would know superman before they would recognize DBZ.
I have sooooo many Overpower cards... it's not even funny... SOOO MANY... I am glad Vs System is played A LOT different than Over power... (although I enjoyed the art :D )
Overpower owns a sizable piece of real estate in my cardboard closet of shame. I liked the game quite a bit.
A quick re-enactment of how silly a number of the arguments posted for cross-genre vs. have sounded:
*sarcasm mode: engaged*
You know...there's not a lot of girls playing Vs. - That's like half the population. They should do a Barbie/Bratz expansion to bring in the fairer sex. Don't tell me that UDE won't do it because they are a company and a company will do anything to make money so this is perfectly logical. If you don't want to play it you don't have to. Barbie and Bratz have appeared in their own comics so this also makes perfect sense.

YES!
Barbie
verson: Serfer Babe
Cost 5
9/9
If Ken comes home late kick his butt and put a 1/1 counter on Barbie! then make Ken appologize profusly.
so while the anime issue seems rooted more in the crowds it will encourage to intermingle, the darkhorse licensed comics are more acceptable, right?
minus star wars..?
ok. that is a start. i persoanlly detest dragonball and all of it's incarnations. i hate the silly overly powerful characters.
but i'll take a second to point out that many characters in this game don't even come close to accurate character translations.
twoface shouldn't even be close to a 16/16 for a 7 drop. for any reason. not when added to his ability and in comparison to what other 7 drops stats are. and i think that is how dbz and it's likes would/ could be translated. they would likely suffer superman syndrom, and find themselves all underpowered for the sake of game balance. until they hit the 7-8 drop areas any way. then they could be broken as all heck.
i don't 'want' them, but i can accept that they could come about.
i am a strong proponent for thundercats, gi joe, and avp and robocop and terminator though.
they are all interactive in the same universes essentially. robocop has fought terminator and aliens vs predator was a game that would have survived longer had the company not been driven to jump through so many loops in effort to figure out who had the rights to produce the games.
and the idea of jumping the shark is highly misplaced in reference to these properties.
if you'll remember, there have been a few tries at a superhero based game that failed miserably or floundered around prior to the vs system as well.
vs was just what those 'unsupportive' comic book fans needed to get in to a ccg. maybe vs can offer that to those other fans as well?
not too much of a stretch guys and gals.
while barbie would be possible to be made in to a vs system game, it may not be the best idea for the game. but if a barbie based adventure cartoon came along (think jem and the holograms) where it recieved a strong following, i wouldn't rule it out as a possibility.
not something i would want to see, but i would understand how it got to that point if it happened.
other companies must be looking in to the ccg arenas. it is just logical. that means that somewhere out there people are working on the marketing research needed for those ventures.
the fanime stuff has it's own following. nothing wrong with that.
all of us were some kind of something else until we matured, right? so instead of driving away the younger fans, why not welcome the chance to mold a new generation by letting fanime stuff bring them in to the game and then show them the superiority of characters like marvel and d.c. are toting?
my son used to watch me play cards when he was under 2 years old. he would sneak in to the closet and grab a box and throw cards all over the floor, since to him that was all we adults were really doing.
he developed a love for batman from his cousin one weekend. (surprised me that he learned it from him instead of me). now he likes power rangers. and yu-gi-oh, since he is 5.
i told him that the game i play now has batman in it, and he asked' are there power rangers?' i said no. he said' is it the same as yu-gi-oh?' (again, he is 5). i told him no. he said' can i play with batman?' i said yes.
he said' can you teach me to play?'
so my little batman fan, has returned to his roots, so to speak.
just like most of those kids out there will, just given the chance to be brought around again, is all.
Basically what we are down to is that . . .
1. we all no VS is the best CCG for comics to hit - EVER
2. we all want VS to have a long and fruitful career
3. this game is only going to survive by taking small, precisely calculated foot steps.
I admit that I would have fun with a TMNT expansion but you have to realize you can only go so far before you drive off your original client base.
I quit playing Heroclix when the INDY set came out, one of the reasons is that they were deviating away from anything I had knowledge off, also because I don't have a lot of money to throw around and thirdly because I new VS was coming and that it was looking to be very good, so I stopped and saved up, waiting for VS to hit.
If UDE announced tomorrow that the next expansion sets were going to be focused on drawing new players into the meta that tells me two things . . .
1.They are going to be releasing sets that I have no interest in.
and 2. They are no longer worried about keeping me as a client satisfied. And that will probably be where I jump off the good ship VS.
But that's just me, i'm willing to bend for the game, but I'm not willing to break.
also, if my post wasn't long enough already, I think the Jumping the Shark metaphor is incredibly accurate for what we are talking about. And also the fact that we are getting worked up about a problem that ideally won't need to be seriously confronted for a few years to come.
One Marvel set
One DC set
One (insert title here) set
One (insert other title here) set
So it's still 4 sets a year, and everyone gets a fair share.
To whoever said that thing about Barbie- I said any COMBAT oriented series could be made into a VS game. Barbie isn't about combat from what I've heard.
I can see that there are lots of die hard comic fans that only want Marvel/DC/maybe Indy to be in this game. I really can't see why they are against expansions that bring new players into the game.
For example: I wanted to get some of my friends into the game. I told them about it, showed them the game and stuff, but in the end turned it down because "it only has comic book characters in it. i've never read comics in my life. it's just not interesting enough."
I have never read comics either, and got started on this game because I am a true gamer and the mechanics looked great, so I hopped on the train, and it has been a fun ride. But not everyone has the same mentality as me, so most people won't pick this up if they have no interest in comics.
i think the presence of starter only 'sets' for the less inclined sets would stlll keep things going in the right direction.
3 pairs of starters a year, offering reprints of cards like flying kick and such, combined with new characters from other genres. this would prevent too many people from 'being forced' to buy sets just for cards to compete in the meta.
this would allow us to have the turtles in a set. it would allow avp and robocop vs terminator or vegeto vs goku decks that would be amazing for introducing the game mechanics to new players!
and it would offer the ability to play fan favorites all at the same time!
as we saw the batman ccg game, right? and the fantastic four game, too?
why not a ninja turtles ggc, that just happens to use the vs system.
tournament play could easily be relegated to modern marvel or d.c. or golden age where everything would be legal!!
how can you guys not be excited by a prospect like that??!!?
