I would play for just product and points, hell most of the reason i play vs is for the ea's playmats and deck boxes, if only played cards for the money i earn on it or the pro tours i went to, i would have quit Vs and Magic a long time ago ;)
I would play in money-less PCQs, because I just like to play in tournaments. But I am also planning on playing in the City Championships for this reason.
What I don't understand is: why are PCQs even needed if there are going to be no more PCs? I mean, why not just let PC Indy be open to everyone since it is the last one?
What a lot of people are bemoaning is the loss of the monthly tournament that means something. So why not just have City Championships be a monthly event?

I agree wholeheartedly. As I said elsewhere, these forums seem to have rushed the announcement and things don't seem very well thought-out. Then we have PC Sydney, which will send the whole office into a spin for two weeks.
Hopefully they will hammer out a solid system when they get back.
I would totally go to a PCQ as described. I rarely win jack anyway, so I'd go to have fun, trade, see friends, and serve the same function as I always do - be there for "real" players to roll over on their way to prizes/points!
2. Make truly EXCLUSIVE EAs for the prize support. Make an EA that ONLY PCQ *FINALISTS* get in addition to the other prizes. Make the EAs of cards people like or want. Only make popular cards or popular characters. If it doesn't fit one of those categories, it's not really worth making. EAs of Spider-Man, Captain America, Robin, Wonder Woman, Silver Surfer, etc... would all make good prizes. You could even make exclusive shirts and mats. Both would go over extremely well and would be super popular.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Vs PCQs don't mean anything because there is no pinnacle to reach. PC points are (were?) given down to 10th place even if only 10 people attend. The winner gets $250 (which is usually split anyway), some product s/he doesn't need and some swag s/he already won back at the sneak or HL. S/He gets the same EA as everyone else who Top 8ed. And as Q said, these EAs aren't usually cards anyone cares about. I'd be interested in seeing attendance stats from when they were giving out Dr. Doom, TTG! or TNB as opposed to Doomed Earth and Fatality. I'm wondering what would happen to attendance if the winner (and only the winner) got something not so easy to split like EA EoME or Mxy or Mobilize (or a dozen other high quality rares)? How many players that don't care about going to the PC or winning the money would show up for a chance to win some excellent, hard to get swag for a game they love?
Even people like me, who made an effort to show up to a lot of PCQs, would have made more of an effort to show up to ones that were missed for one reason or another. And if you scaled back the sheer quantity of the events, it makes them a little more prestigious, which also helps draw people. I know UDE probably looked at the PCQ attendance and thought "I'm sure they won't mind to much if we cut that, nobody attends them anyway" but I think a good hard look at why they weren't being attended and a restructuring would make PCQs a much more attended (and in turn, profitable) event.
(A) Have points assigned for Hobby League 'special events'. That would be the City Championships, the Release Celebrations and the other things like the Howard the Duck month thing they are planning. Also give points for attending premiere events like the Mega Weekend 10K/Amateur Championship. Perhaps even get points for going to sanctioned Hobby League [i.e. have results sent in with Mantis]. Each event like this ... you get points [on a scale based on the type of event]. This is attedance based NOT result based. You attend enough events, you are able to attend the Pro Circuit. The ratings based invites can still be in place, and you can still allow people to qualify, but this way people that attend on a regular basis can still go regardless of what happens to their rating. They don't want the PC to be open to just ANYONE [unless they start charging for it, or in the case of Indy, having people pay to get into Gen Con at the very least] but allowing in the people that attend lots of events would be a good thing.
(b) Give good prizes at the City Championship and other monthly events that will, in essence, take the place of the PCQs.
(c) If they DO want to bring back the PCQs, here's an idea to 'replace' the prize card ... a super points card. UDE sends out to the quarter annual PCQ for a region a card that is redeemable for several thousand points at the UDE store. Let's say ... 5000 points. That's a couple boxes worth of cards worth of points. Not sure if that's 'enough' or not. They'd be basically giving away store credit to their points store. Just an idea.
As for the people that say special EA cards don't mean anything, you should add the line "to you." Some of us really like the EAs. I have a book of just EA cards that I've collected. Many people have spent a lot of money and time collecting the EAs. So, they do mean something to some people.
