You do realize that the real actual Spartans, as opposed to Frank Miller's Awesome Fantasy Spartans:

A) were generally #######s who abhorred the connection of family ties
B) had lots of slaves of their own and didn't really care all that much about "freedom"
C) were notorious pederasts just like everybody else in ancient Greece
D) despite all their militaristic pretensions really weren't all that much more awesome than the other Greek armies, particularly the Athenians (who are the real reason the Greeks beat the Persians - the Athenians beat their asses solidly at Salamis in a naval battle that actually won the Pelopenesian War) or for that matter the Thebans (who absolutely destroyed the Spartans in 370-ish BC with citizen soldiers - yes, the same citizen soldiers both the real and movie Spartans made fun of).
E) were, militarily speaking, idiots - that hoplite shield wall was the only thing they knew how to do, the only thing they had the imagination to do, and they got lucky that Thermopylae happened to be a good place to use that strategy. (They tried to use it against the Thebans. The Thebans destroyed Sparta and consigned it to history. Point, not-the-Spartans)
F) and not-so-conveniently had fought with the Persians earlier in the war against the Athenians.
