I remember when I was trying to get a larger player base I was sitting there watching all the kids playing Yu-gi-oh. One of the many dads standing around came over and we started talking about VS He asked me the basic Questions who, what, where, why, when.
Who is in the game anyone I know? I respond Name a team there in here. Of coarse the guy has to say Galactus. This is before HOG came out but word was out that it was coming.
What makes this game so fun? I respond It's got Characters that you know and love. Where should I start? I say well HOG is coming in about 2 months. He even showed up at the Sneak peak.
Why haven't I heard of this game. I say well UDE promotional department just doesn't have a clue.
When can I play ? Right now so I sat there teaching him the game.
His son comes over and says I remember that game its still around? I say yup It's been awarded best CCG of 2005,Best Expansion 2005 by Inquest magazine . So the kid asks me if I can teach him how to play.I did now they come every Sunday father and son playing together. The guy comes up to me recently. He Thanked me for giving him something that he and his son could do together. Thats my best memory of VS. To Date at least.
Well back at origins I started playing, but then stopped for a while. I on occasion borrowed a deck from my friend to play in PCQs. Well this was back when voltage was new, and squad was just on it's way out. Well one day I went into my local card shop to play a different game, and found out they were having a scholarship tournement starting in 15 minutes. I decided to join even though I was playing a modified version of squad that was created by another person in the tournement. He played voltage. We both won the first two rounds and in the third, I had to face him. It was the complete beginner against the the pro. He had played in the pro circut many times and is a great player. He had odds. Well I got out Joystick on 1 and nearly emptied my hand, and he dropped eve. On two I was able to drop kyle rainer, searching for light armor and equiping it, and he dropped king snake and rat catcher. The next I dropped mammomax, and he dropped black panther and got advanced hardware. After this turn I was ahead in life by alot, and feeling good. Finally on 4 I dropped green arrow, KOing his eve. At the end of the turn I had won -6 to -13. I was extremely happy since while I had no clue what I was doing I had beaten an amazing player. After that round I won the rest of my matchs and won the tournement. It gave me a great feeling, and I still get a fuzzy feel when I remember what happened that day that made me play VS again.
i know this is the eleventh hour, so i'm not expecting any prize support. I just really have a great memory to share.
As far back as i can remember, i have played any card game i approach without compromise. Never pulling punches, unless teaching new players some basics of the game.
At our local hobby store however, i have a 'villian' complex. I want to lose. I find myself craving games where i make no mistakes, but am simply outplayed. (maybe i should say it's more a 'lex luthor' complex?)
Anyway with my competitive attitude, i'm told in the more.... competitive formats i can be quite intimidating to play. Now i realize its easy to be the big fish in a little pond, and always seek competition where victory for me is a long shot.
Enter Bushi Zhong, 12 year old VS System newbie.
I was doing my typical 'bad guy' rants (not unsimilar to old WWF rants from the 80s) I'm gonna crush you all, 'Feel the force of my TRUE power' and some other classics just to make myself everyone's target, really. And this tiny little guy walks up to me in true heroic fashion, and proudly exclaims through a thick mandarin accent: 'Not if i have anything to say about it!'
Now i love a great showdown. and the more artificial and draw out i can make it... the more fun i have.
That said... i'll speed up through a pile of evil laughter and bring it to the finals, with me sitting undefeated with my revenge squad/fearsom 5 hybrid of evilness and little Bushi sitting across from me with literally every other player standing behind him, cheering him on.
And man... the kid was FLAWLESS. He seemed nervous but showed no fear at all. He was running a rock-based jsa build. But i managed to stall out past turn 7, for the MWAHAHAHA win condition featuring doomsday and a team tactics on mr. myx. Well normally the win condition anyways.
He had already managed an earth 2 sub team with huntress and had boosted superman on 7 for some rather large characters, but the triumphant look on his face as he boosted supergirl on 8... a minimum +7+7 on all exhausted in combat against doomsday. It was straight out of a movie and played out on a card table. I have never ever enjoyed any tournament so much as that one. And i never had so much fun losing either. for the record... superman brickwalled doomsdays 23 attack swing powered up to an astounding 26/25 wall. To the truimphant shouts of the others watching.
Well played little Bushi... well played. Evil had been vanquished. The world could once again live in peace. Doomsday was sent hurtling through space.
Afterwards i asked him how long he had been playing, to wich he answered a mysterious, '...long enough'. Some of the guys STILL talk about that game. I honestly don't blame them.
One slight question, if I were to say place either first or second what would happen if I can't reply on saturday? Even though it's very unlikely that I will place, it would stink if I got passed over.
