Spidey/MJ is blah. I don't like the couple; they really don't have any chemistry going on with each other.
NY/Spidey. Not a fan of the angle, and the end sequence with the tons of fans watching the fan and commenting was dumb.
Sandman, I enjoyed the character and he was interesting, but there was a severe lack of interaction between the two characters and the end between the two of them was lame. Oh, and he doesn't fly.
New Goblin, again enjoyed the character. I would rather he be a bit more begrudging at the end, but was otherwise excellent.
Gwen Stacy? What a waste.
Venom/Brock was okay, I'd rather Brock be a bit more edgy bad guy rather than being a stupid bad guy. Oh yeah, they didn't do the whole there "we are Venom" bit. I was a bit disappointed with how he was finished off.
There were some great moments; I think the biggest failing of the movie is that the villains are infinitely more interesting than the hero.
I left the theater last night with mixed emotions about the film. I think it would be unfair to rank it as anything less than good, but at the same time it's hard to look at is as a whole movie and not a sum of it's parts. I'm a casual spider-man fan, so while I enjoy the character I'm not heavily invested in details matching canon. That said:
I felt like there was a problem with Peter waking up in his new black suit, asking but once where it came from, then kind of deciding not to question it, at all. Then having it cut to him and Dr. Connors examining a piece of the symbiote felt like there was a scene missing, something along the lines of him discovering the new suit isn't just fabric?
Liked Topher as Eddie, loved the CG Venom, however sort of wished they had used a layering effect of some fort on the Venom voice instead of keeping Topher's, just something to represent there being a distinction between Eddie and Venom.
It's been said to death but the emo thing was killing me. Can Bruce Campbell make up for that? Well, he is pretty awesome...
Overall, I think it showed in the final product that Sam wasn't as familiar with Venom in that a lot of the elements revolving around the suit seemed rushed. Such as in the bell tower scene when Peter goes to tear it off, it's now bonded to him. When did that happen? At what one moment did he decide it had to go? I think it was a mistake having the symbiote connected to the suit and not to Peter, but then again, I'm the one that pays to see the movie, not the one paid to make it.
First hour or so was the strongest part, but still worth seeing in the end.
I'm along the same line of thought re: Lizard in Spidey 4. While Connors claims not to be a biologist, he's still missing an arm, and gosh - look at that - he has a sample of an alien symbiote that can regenerate damage...
I posted a few nitpicky comments on my livejournal, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and whether you think he was integral to the plot or not, I lurved Thomas Haden Church as Sandman. Excellent casting.
Spidey 4, Kraven the Hunter coming from Africa to hunt the mysterious sewer Lizard terrorizing New York only to find much stronger prey in Spider-Man. Callisto's voodoo plays across the background messing with Peter's life and he ends up with Gwen at the end of the film.
5 could be the return of Venom... Perhaps a twist on the Clone Saga, where by the crazy ressurected Norman decides he needs help to kill Peter... Clones Brock from a sample of the Symbiote left behind after the explosion. Meanwhile Jonah sponsors the Scorpion fiasco and Spidey has to deal with Venom and Scorpion. You can have MJ in the background getting famous as a model and soap star. Movie ends with Norman murdering Gwen Stacy because Peter doesn't figure out who's really behind it all. He runs to Mary Jane for comfort, roll credits.
6 is the final confrontation with the Green Goblin who finds and uses Calisto to summon demonic forces to supe himself up. Go the direction of the Ultimate Green Goblin maybe. Rhino, Vulture, Chameleon and maybe Scorpian again all thrown at Spidey as he tries to get to Norman before the final confrontation and close on Peter/MJ's wedding.
crap, no that is giving crap a bad name this movie was aspiring to be crap and it actulay hurts me to say this b/c while I am a dc fan I have been enjoying most of the marvel movies. Kirsten Dunst once again ruined a movie. Topher Grace was the worst pick for eddie brock. The FX was awesome half the time and awful the other half. The story line was dry boring drug out and trying to hard to appeal to non comic fans and in doing so appeals to no one. I can only hoe FF2 does not disappoint as much as this.
Ok so yeah, i went and saw this at midnight, and boy was it a waste of 9 bucks... like I am the biggest spidey fan out there, but i could not believe that that movie was actually made. Throughout the whole random emo montague i just kept thinking to myself: is this really in the movie??? One thing that really bugged me was all the close ups of everybody's faces... no one looks good that way and i found myself wanting to throw something at the screen and all it's ugliness.
Sandman really didnt have a point and while he was well done, his interactions with spiderman were really lame. He got the most airtime out of any villian in the movie, and did the least. They should have just focused on one, maybe two... villians and made them really good.
Venom potrayed by topher grace was pretty awesome, however it was pretty dumb how he only showed up in the last 15 minutes of the film and they killed him off! like you could see the skeleton!!! Had he been terrorizing people from the very beginning and spidey tried to use the black suit to defeat him, it would have been a lot better.
All in All i was severely dissapointed by this movie, i really only enjoyed two parts: Stan Lee's cameo, and the scene where peter hits MJ (someone in the audience says: B*tch when everyone is silent).
So yeah i would have to give it like 4/10.
P.S. One thing that kinda bothers me is how noone likes x3??? i thought it was by far the best one. and the first was among the worst superheros movies i've seen...
I think that guarantees at least one more movie. As far as the reviews go. Pirates OTC 2 (previous record holder) got only 43% positive reviews in the first 2 weeks of its release. It went on to make over $430+ mill worldwide.
With the record opening of SM3, I think its a sure thing that we will get SM4-6 as soon as possible.
Here's hoping we get at least one of these in 3d Spidy-vision.
Why is everyone so caught up on Peter going EMO? It was hilarious. He is a classic pale, skinny, outcast, intellegent, Magic-playing nerd. If you were to multiply the negative angsty emotions (which the suit did) of most classic pale, skinny, outcast, intellegent, magic, playing nerds, you get EMO. Did you expect Peter Parker to become a biker or perhaps a bad-### pimp? Hell no he did what any other self respecting dork does when he gets angsty and sad, he put on the Cure or Fall-out boy, did his makeup and thought he looked cool when he really didn't. I thought it was too funny. Was it not an intentional farce of dorks? Was Rammi pointing to the crowd and saying "do you really think you look bad-### when you're EMO?" The movie has it's flaws, (the dance scene would have been so much better if Mary Jane would have been singing and Pete would have been slowdancing with his back to her and done the slow turn eye contact.) there was a bit too much flash and I rolled my eyes a bit during the whole thing, but wasn't that the point?
Anywho I feel that the excellent Bruce Campbell cameo makes up for all the flaws. It's not the best of the trilogy but I still enjoyed the film.
Something That bugged me was How come when Harry Took a Pumpkin Bomb to the Face, He got all Scarred up, but still was not killed, mush less turned into a skeleton. But Brock who was in the Symboite (which had not hint towards being weak to fire) got evaporated??
My Real Hope is that Eddie Brock Senior shows up, finds a Peice of the Symboite while looking for his Son, and turns into a real Venom( by real i mean 6'7'' and huge) He would have a real reason to hate spiderman, he killed his boy.
