The Skaar bit was interesting. Kind of like it was one last parting shot from KEVIN, who just couldn’t resist getting in one little bit of superfluous MCU formula, even after Jen successfully argued that her season finale should be more character-focused and put its focus on her personal journey.
Because Skaar adds nothing. He says nothing. He does nothing. Odds are really good he’d be completely dismissed in a second season with a throwaway joke. Because Skaar is not a part of Jen’s story, and it’s way too early in her story to give her Lyra.
Man, whatever happened to Lyra? I kinda liked the confused teen/cool aunt vibe they had going on.
ASK ME ONCE I’LL ANSWER TWICE JUST WHAT I KNOW I’LL TELL BECAUSE I WANNA!
SOUND DEVICE AND LOTS OF ICE I'LL SPELL MY NAME OUT LOUD BECAUSE I WANNA!
I think it means stuff like "PROTECTED" vs "SAFEGUARD", or "Can Use Blades/Claws/Fangs" on a Special Power instead of "Blades/Claws/Fangs" on a Special Power.
Yeppers, this is what I was going for. The differences between pre-2017 language, 2017 language, and eventually 2021 and after language. I could make that more clear if it isn't coming across well!

I can help with that! Here's the link to the dial generator! It's a very flexible tool, but you'll have to come up with your own point values. The hardest part is appropriately costing your characters!

That's a much more charitable interpretation of Skaar's appearance than I had. I just saw it as the plug for the eventual World War Hulk or Planet Hulk-thing that we'll eventually be getting; not a season two plug.
Haha meanwhile, yeah, he's such a nonentity in the show that if I were to dial him at all, the best he'd get from me is a rehash of my X-Men: Apocalypse Jubilee custom.
I made a Hulk dial to go with the Skaar… swear this is the last one lol

I started my Unclixed MCU set to dial characters Wizkids had missed, and through your support, that expanded into a dial-and-essay series about movies and games. For the large part, it's been extremely fun and rewarding, and I've 100% loved meeting and chatting with all of you.
With the MCU specifically, that was manageable back during Phases 1-3, especially when I was only dialing characters with demonstrable skills and tactics. The joy was in the film discussion, and how off-beat the characters could be in those films.
Now that the MCU is a multimedia enterprise, there functionally hasn't been a break from it. On average, the time between movies and shows is one week, which means I'm constantly writing essays, drafting dials, and just keeping up with the deluge of content.
When I like the material --WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, STRANGE 2, ETERNALS, and WHAT IF-- it's a labor of love. When I hate the material --LOKI, LOVE & THUNDER, SHE-HULK-- it's just a labor. I had to force myself to work on material I'd honestly rather have walked away from without a second glance.
Some of that's on Marvel Studios outreaching their grasp with the Phase 4 production. Even they've acknowledged -internally and publically- that overall quality has dipped, and they're course-correcting to rectify that. That's why BLADE is getting a ground-up rewrite and a new director and why ARMOR WARS is becoming a movie. They are aware that the Disney+ series storytelling has not been up to the brand's previous standards.
Some of that's on me-- I've always had personal creative projects that have been my primary driver, where this has been a fun hobby. With how much content there is now, it feels like a third job. It's fun when the material -and you- are great; it blows when that isn't the case... and it makes the time spent feel like time wasted.
And here I am, preparing to watch WAKANDA FOREVER tomorrow, less because I'm excited for the film (and I am!), but more because I feel like I have to make dials and an essay for it... and I'm dreading it. After how intense my month has been, I'm burned out, and the thought of making a minimum of 10 dials and essays to match sounds exhausting instead of exhilarating. I'm sure WAKANDA FOREVER will be more my jam than some recent Marvel projects, but I flat don't have the bandwidth for it.
SO, I'm announcing a break until I can figure stuff out. Maybe I just need a couple months to find my groove. Maybe I need to just handle the movies and let someone else handle the shows. Maybe I need to surrender the thread to someone with more time on their hands. We'll see.
In the meantime, I'll still post the odd dial in the threads that I'm still passionate about. Please join us in The Comedy Set! Everyone contributing has had such fantastic, creative, genuinely funny ideas that have played with the substance of Heroclix. Come and see all the delightfully spooky stuff we're doing in the Lets Remake Horrorclix Together thread! I'd love to see more unique voices try their hand and updating these glorious characters!
Beyond that, I hope you all enjoy WAKANDA FOREVER and are still overall digging the MCU! Let me know how you're all feeling!
As far as I’m concerned, this is a good idea. This is supposed to be a fun hobby, so if you’re not having fun, that’s an issue.
I’ll keep following your (and everyone else’s) ideas in the Comedy Set, but horror’s not really my thing. I look forward to seeing where your dials pop up next
Take care of yourself!

Glad you liked it! I also thought it was quite good.
You’re of course more than welcome to post any dials of the film you’d like it, but I’d prefer if you did so on a thread of your own.
These threads have been my babies, and I’m still belaboring how to handle what I do with them going forward.
Fair stuff Squabbler - I haven't posted a thread most of this year and haven't finished a project in...ummm...checks notes...forever. Your own health and enjoyment of this comes first. I love your essays and find them better written and more engaging than anything out there these days in Variety or on the AVClub - you're good enough at this it shouldn't be a hobby and if it is a hobby, it should be one you love and not dread.
You aren't wrong that it's been like a firehose this year and it's also been the year of the biggest swings and shakiest material.
Wondering how you feel about this place still being the hub to talk about films and shows? or perhaps we should take that to the "TV and Movie" forums?

Huge thanks for the support, friend! I sincerely appreciate it and your early praise which was a big part of why I made this a regular thing. That comparison to the AV Club & Variety means A LOT, and genuinely made my day!
If the firehose slows down and we start getting things with the quality of WAKANDA FOREVER, I could see returning after a break. It’s been a lot, and it hasn’t been consistently at a quality to make me want to keep up with it.
That said, I’m good with this continuing to be a hub for movie discussion, but I worry that it’ll stop being a custom thread and begin being a movie thread?
Maybe we should make a community dial thread for the MCU? Post a dial and post one’s opinion of the film? We could keep the first page for curating dials and making the thread easy to navigate?

I thought about that, too. The only issue is that it sort of puts an entrance fee on the thread, for people who just want to contribute to the movie discussion. But maybe that won’t be a problem in practice.

Only just catching up with the threads - it takes me all my time reading them - so kudos to you for creating them !! Totally agree with the others your enjoyment is paramount, as much as I enjoy the threads your wellbeing ... and sanity comes first ( sorry still reading too much Lovecraft )
Take it easy buddy - and I look forward to future essays
