Oh, yeah, I remember the race between Supes and Wally Flash. And Flash won, tho Mxy thought he'd lose or something, totally screwed up Mxy for awhile there.
Painting his own face blue was one, and the Flash race was another, but you're sorta half right. He said Superman had to win, but when Flash won, he said he lied, so he left anyway (he was a little confused about the whole lying concept).
Was the first one the traditional "say his name backwards" challange?
Yes it was.
Two more to go! Here, I'll even give you a hint for each one:
1. One of them was when Superman wasn't even around.
2. And for the other one, Mxy wouldn't even bother leaving his fantastic new friends in another dimension to clean up Luthor's mess.
I remember that now--Byrne did do a story where he pretty heavily implied that Myx and the Impossible Man were the same--he had jumped back over to the Marvel Universe, where he was busy with his very first encounter with the FF.
This is a continuity problem, since they have been shown together in a crossover event, but that's what happened.
I have no idea what the last one is, though. I've either forgotten it completely or I didn't read it.

Like I said, I've read all these comics, but found them pretty forgettable. Had the question been about Mxy=Impy, I would have gotten it.
I'm not sure if that was Byrne or one of the other writers around that time, though.
I don't recall either, but knowing Byrne's devotion to Jack Kirby (the only artist other than himself that he ever credited with any talent), it was probably Byrne.
The question was what Mxy's challenge was, and as I recall from that story, Superman had to punch Luthor; which he technically did when Mxy created a protoplasmic monster to battle Superman, out of Luthor's genetic material, or something like that.

I met Byrne a few years ago, he lives near by to where I am, but we only met at the grocery store. He autographed a copy of the Superman/Batman "elseworlds-type" mini-series he'd written. He did come off as a bit of ego-centric. Still, I kick myself for not asking him about the Hulk series (this was a month before the series relaunched, with him writting the book).
