When it comes to Falafel it also really depends on what your experience is. If you've only ever gotten the gross pre-frozen store brand then it's pretty awful. But freshly made authentic stuff is super good. A good rule of thumb is if it's beige in the middle it's icky, if it's green in the middle it's delicious.

Also, it could just be because there's limited Kosher options around Penn, but I can't imagine never having had falafel. I must have it once a week.
The problem is that all the places here that have falafel also have Döner Kebab. Which is the food of the gods.
Well, gods like Dyonisos and Thor, who you just know are constantly hungover.
Still, it's hard to pass up on that in favor of something else just because of the funny name.

Oh Shawarma. Yeah I'm totally with you. I'd never get a falafel over a shawarma. The falafel place here is vegetarian, otherwise there'd be no contest.
Do you stuff your Doner Kebab full of salads and dressings and stuff like we do to shawarma? The best is Israeli salad, pickles, coleslaw, fried eggplant, onion and quinoa with hummus, chili sauce, and amba (a tangy mango sauce). Mmmm.

I concur. If you're going to deep-fry a ball of something, there are plenty of better alternatives. My favorite is reuben balls which consist of corned beef, sauerkraut, and swiss cheese. I also like swiss, ham, and risotto that one of the lunch trucks at my office serves.

Absolutely, although there doesn't seem to be the same variety as you describe.
Usually you have lettuce, tomatoes, white cabbage, red cabbage, onions, and tzatziki, with the option of adding some kind of hot sauce, peppers, and feta.
I wouldn't dream of putting eggplant or mango sauce on there.

I tried shawarma once at a random greek place and was mightily disappointed.

Recipes. I might have to break out the frying oil this weekend. Some falafel, some fried oreos, maybe some of these reuben balls. Yea, that's the stuff.

Try it at a middle eastern place instead! I've never had a Greek take on it, but just generally the modern Israeli/Arab palate is probably pretty different from Greek. Shwarma might be my favorite food. If anyone's ever in the northern part of New York, by the Heights, you have to get shwarma here. It's a hole in the wall full of Jewish college students, but it's probably the best food I've ever had.

I don't have the recipes. My wife objects to owning a deep fryer for health/cleanliness reasons. I have yet to find the reuben balls in my hometown, I just get them every time I visit my family in Minnesota. I'm sure you could find something on the web.
