Last weekend I watched three movies that I hadn't seen.
Django Unchained - Was pretty epic, and actually better than I expected. This is impressive since I had heard nothing but good about it and that usually works the other way. Good times. "Now go get the marshal."
Cabin in the Woods - I do not like horror movies, but was talked into giving this a shot. I thought it was pretty fantastic. Loved the tone, the humor, etc. It was excellent. "Oh, Come On!"
Dredd - Meh. Not bad, but not great. I really wanted to like it, but was disappointed.
We agree on 2 out of 3! I thought Dredd was pretty great for what it was.

Fairy tale meets celtic mythology with opulent visuals. I can dig that. It wasn't really focussed enough, though. There were a bunch of borderline random things happening for over an hour, and then the movie ended very quickly. I do love a desperate cavalry charge, though.
I was a bit wary about Kristen Stewart, as I had only read less than flattering critiques of her acting in Twilight. I found it passable, although it was weird that she was breathing heavily pretty much the entire time - except after sprinting up a couple flights of stairs in full plate armor. And I am inclined to count her among the pleasing visuals, although I am a bit confused by the permanent grimace she seems to have going on.

Yeah, I don't know. Like I said, I didn't hate it by any stretch, but something about it didn't work. About the 3rd time the made something unnecessarily slow motion, I was kinda over it. I'll definitely say that it didn't suck.

Heh. To be honest, it might suffer a bit from "hey, it didn't suck! Success!" issues.

Dredd would have been the best movie I'd seen in theaters that year if Avengers haden't come out a few months before it. Great action and the humor from the magazine stuck. I liked that the 3d slow motion only happened when the drugs that slowed time were used.
Star-Lord and friends landed on this part of the world today. So I went and watched Guardians of the Galaxy... in 3D no less. So how was it?
Well, it is not great. It is not even good. Because it was freakin' awesome! It is 2 hours but doesn't feel that long at all. And that 2 hours includes the credit rolls, which you all have to sit it through because there is a bonus scene. It actually got a lot of stuff crammed into that 2 hours, lots of fight scenes and lots bullets (rockets, laser and electric pulses) being shot, lots of explosions, balanced with good humor and dialogue (although I'd say The Avengers still had the best script), think epic proportion. And it even had a couple of scenes that will make you choke as you try not to let a tear fall.
Thanos made a longer appearance. And he looks cool in an all golden armor rather than the familiar blue with gold trim one. Clearly, setting himself up for the upcoming Marvel movies. And...

the Infinity Gems have been officially introduced. I know a lot of people have been talking about the gems since the first Captain America and Thor movies. Here, a bit of their history had been revealed. And it was also made clear that Thanos is trying to collect them.
I personally am not that familiar with the GotG universe but I'm guessing someone knowledgeable would easily recognized 3 or 4 major characters. Me, I only recognized...

Cosmo, the Russian dog.
Which was pretty cool as he was also in the bonus scene.

Unfortunately, she thinks that both of those traits constitute acting no matter what the role is.
Watched the premiere of Sharknado 2 last night with my in-laws. A good time was had by all. It leaned heavily on cameos and being "so bad it's good," but it was entertaining.

I skipped it solely because the basic premise that Kristen Stewart is supposed to be more attractive than Charlize Theron is beyond belief.
I loved it, and it surpassed expectations, having seen the first one. It included Judd Hirsch (of the old 'Taxi' show) driving a taxi and Robert Hays (of Airplane!) flying an airplane.
It was worth watching for the opening scene alone. Of course it's got more plot holes that you could drive a truck through them, but the strength of acting notably increased.

watched django unchained....wow, amazing movie. 5 stars hands down for me. I didn't even realize it was almost 3 hrs. long! had me hooked almost from the beginning
A boring summer without work, too much time on my hands, and an AMC gift card conspired together to get me out to theaters three nights in a row this week.
Tuesday Night
- A Most Wanted Man
I hadn't even heard of this movie until Tuesday when I looked to see what was playing. Phillip Seymour Hoffman played a modern-day head of a clandestine German anti-terrorism espionage unit. Since it was intended to be less James Bond and more realistic, it dug deep into the slow, political bog of intelligence-gathering and asset acquistion. I liked it.
Wednesday Night
- Neighbors
Like most Seth Rogan movies, it was an interesting cross between hilarious and dopey. I liked it alright. It did have a very memorable and entertaining fight scene, which was probably the highlight of the movie for me.
Thursday Night
- Guardians of the Galaxy
I loved it and talked about it in another thread.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
Saw the Guardians of Galaxy, was pleasantly impressed. Had been a bit worried it was going to get kinda dorked up to much, however it was simply great!!
GOTG-I just didn't want it to suck. Low expectations sure, but I was nervous.Boy was I pleasantly surprised. Entertaining throughout!!! GO SEE IT NOW!!!
And I used to think there was something about this movie. But there really isn't. I can relate to the protagonist - save for the happy ending, of course - but looking at the movie objectively it really isn't good. At all.
