It's perfectly all right, Stan. I've dealt with this sort of thing before. If I am in your campaign, I'll just suggest that on the nights that you are out, we use your character as the "mine detector." You know, walk into the room, look around, make sure there are no deadly traps or lurking ravenous beasts before the rest of us step inside. I think that you'd be very useful that way.

Now, if it's excessive, and you're just not there more than once a month, I'll just give you a companion character to play instead. That makes your character easy to play when you're not there, easier to set aside when you're not there, and easier to have suddenly show up out of nowhere when you are there.
"Hey guys, sorry, got distracted back there. Glad I caught up."
We have some players in our Saturday game who do this. And another player from our Wednesday game was going to have this happen to them, but then their work schedule changed.
You guys rock! I'm gonna be freezing stuff like a mad man once a month or so!
I still have copies of the booklets that preceded the boxed sets, before there was such a thing as Advanced D&D (Blackmoor, Eldritch Wizardry, Chainmail, etc.)

Well, that beats me then.

All Thawmus needs to do is give us a magical artifact that allows us to transform you into a flying helper monkey. That way POOF! just like that, you can be someone's familiar!

That's because in 1975, you were naught but a gleam in your father's eye, young padawan.

Depends on whether I already have a magic staff of my own or not.
