Considering the fact that TOS came out about 20-25 years before TNG, I think you're holding to an unfair standard. And while I can't argue with Shatner being a #######, I can say that there's a lot of good episodes in the first two seasons of TOS. Balance of Terror comes to mind, as does Conscience of the King.
Enterprise is just flat out blah to me, save for the Mirror universe episodes, those were fun. DS9 took a few seasons to get going (as did TNG), and Voyager was just... meh?

Let me see if I can find those two episodes of ToS and I'll try to fudge my way through it.
I'm not even gonna mention the awesomeness of Ricardo Montalban as Khan in the Space Seed episode. I agree that ToS really hits its stride in Season 2 and admit that Season 3 had its major turkeys (Spock's Brain being one of them) - but let's face it, without ToS there is no franchise that spawns all of the rest. And besides Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, it also gave us such memorable characters as Scotty, Sulu, Sarek, Khan, Mudd, the Gorn, Klingons, Romulans, Mr. Atoz, etc.

The problem is that it never kept going.
One episode you have hundreds of ships fighting for control over the sector, next episode it's "Jake has the sniffles and Quark lost his rubber duckie, whatever shall we do?"

Rocks and Shoals is probably one of my fave episodes of DS9, as well as Inquisition (or anything featuring Section 31).

Dropped my Netflix a long time ago and am a straight U450 cusotmer through U-Verse... pretty dumb, really, but the deal was too good. Might look into re-upping soon though, especially after hearing about Orange is the New Black (got a great review on NPR yesterday, too)

I disagree about DS9 not sustaining, from season 3 on it was p. awesome.
I'm a freak for DS9 and it is my favorite of all the series, and I'll probably put Sisko ahead of Picard on favorite captains list. Plus Dukat is probably the best reoccurring villain in the shows (I don't count Khan), Garrick is a lot of fun, plus Ferengi.
I agree about Kirk being meh, any episode of TOS I've ever seen is in spite of Kirk because I enjoy the other characters, Bones primarily.
