Did they completely get rid of 2 and 4-star raids?

Haven't seen any in a long time. The four tiers we have now are plenty enough for me at least.

Yes they did, awhile back. I think around when mega raids started.

Oh great! It seemed like depending on the raids and circulations between featured raids it was only ever worth it to do a 1 or 2 raid or do a 3 or 4 raid. Other than that it was never worth it. I hope to see a 3* Tyrranitar raid in the future. They were fun.

I just did exactly this. Had the opportunity to do a remote Bagon raid but decided to skip it and see if the onestar egg at my local gym would hatch a Bagon. Ot was a Mudkip raid...
I did a Groudon raid remotely instead.

I had completely missed that Meteor Mash is available again for this event. Guess I should evolve a Beldum or two before the event ends tomorrow.
Ihave a shadow Beldum with good IVs (11/11/15), not quite sure if I should keep the shadow form or purify it. I already TMed away Frustration on it.

The Johto event next week will unlock the Community Day move for the starters, Marerp and Larvitar. I have a hunfo Larvitar but I am not sure I have enough candy to evolve it...

Quebbs is my hero. I just evolved a purified Metang and not only got rid of Return, I got Meteor Mash in exchange.

Managed to attract Bagon during the Incense hour, so I am done with the collection challenge now.

And now a Bagon raid popped up at my local gym. If anyone still needs Bagon I can invite for a raid. The raid window ends around 10:20 AM EST.

Yeah, I can't say if it's by design or if this is just how the RNG rolled for me, but the incense produced exactly one of each desirable Dragon type - one Dratini, one Bagon - and then one Trapinch, one Vibrava, and a smattering of Horseas. Still waiting on a single Groudon raid to appear, though. Four gyms in sight from my house and it's been nothing but Kyogres for days.

I got three Bagons in quick succession, but I was happy to get one. If I had known Groudon was an issue for you I would have made sure to invite you to those raids, I think I have done half a dozen of each type the last few days.

Yup...left a very sour taste in my mouth that research event did....both of them. Never even saw a Bagon.
Add to that looking ahead to the crap they expect to get beyond level 40 and I am thinking that this game is just making itself cater to the level of player I just do not want to be. I have zero history with the property. It was just a nifty concept, so I tried and out and had some fun, but the game obviously wants to go places where I will not follow, so I will still dabble as I have always done, but I think that the devs are essentially saying that they are done with players like me.
