Please explain the continued success of other games such as Magic, in which the majority of the players play stats rather than players.
In other words, what I'm trying to say is that the problem is not playing stats, the problem is when a game element is released that's so hideously unbalanced that it dwarfs everything else.
ooh..oooh, Mr. Kotter! Me! Me!
Smelly magic kids have a lot of they parent's money to blow?
And their playstyle is compensation for small wee-wees?

Apples and Oranges.
All I'm saying is that we've been saying for a long time that it makes no sense to play based on stats alone. You will eventually end up with a few pieces that are the most effective and SCADS of stuff that the company makes that no one in their right mind would play with.
The logical conclusion is, and has always been, stagnation. The same guys playing the same figures.
That's all I was going for. I don't care who stays in business longer, has a greater share of the market, or is the most smelly.
The only reason that any game piece is a problem because it's unbalanced is because someone figured that out by concentrating on stats. I don't care if it's Firelord or JLA, the problem IS playing stats. If you didn't concentrate on stats, you wouldn't even realize that it's unbalanced.
And you didn't answer MY question: Am I a bad man?

Apologies for butting in, and for derailing, but I would say that Magic (specifically, I can't think of another game that works this way, maybe Warhammer does but I'm not familiar with it at all) gets away with people playing for stats rather than theme in two significant ways.
One is that it's a much more meticulously designed game. The things that slip through the cracks tend to be smaller, and can be patched up with further game design more elegantly.
The second is a willingness to drop the ban hammer on mistakes, which Heroclix has consistently absolutely refused to do no matter how bad things get. And keep in mind Magic bans things when they artificially constrict the metagame, artificial constriction of the metagame being one of the stock Heroclix arguments against bannings (Nightcrawler a problem? Play Bullseye absolutely all the time forever and Nightcrawler becomes "balanced".)
Sorry. I couldn't help it.

there's also the fact that players can be fans of characters.
X-men fan? you're in good shape!
Freedom Fighters fan? eehhh...
Some Heroclix players have more of an emotional attachment to a character. Magic players probably don't feel the same about whatever big boobed demoness is out this week.

Until the JLTB, I would have disagreed with this without much thought. Even with the JLTB in play, I'll still disagree, just not as strongly.
I don't think that stagnation is a guarantee in StatsClix. There's too much variety. Too much Rock/Paper/Scissors. It is going to be almost impossible to (d)evolve the game into a single permutation. It's possible, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's even probable.
Now the JLTB is a bit of a gamechanger here. I think it's insane. But I don't expect it to remain as is, or not have a counter released shortly. And while that counter might not be much help to a guy who plays casually and suffers through "that guy's good team," it will effect the metagame which is what the StatsClix people would focus on most, and reduce it from where it stands.
My thoughts, at any rate.

Magic has been noticeably trying to establish recurring characters for a few years, presumably to try to create those kinds of connections. Don't know how successful they are, but they seem to be aware that they're missing that element and are trying to produce it.

All I see is you making my point for me.
JLA is presently the only thing to play. It is an auto-win. You need it to beat it.
IF they come out with a counter, the only two teams to play are JLA or THE COUNTER.
It sure is a good thing that WK made all those various green animals that Beast Boy can turn into when there's just about no reason to ever field them.
