I don't think you can make Captain America a "legacy character" because that is not who the character is. You can't make a "new" or "hip" Cap because that is not his origin. Steve Rogers was the ultimate man out of time and fought for THE Greatest Generation. We are slowly losing this Generation with time, and at least Steve was showing younger generations that generation and the sacrafices they had to make. If making Frank Castle Captain America only to go with this "hipper generation" than that is disrespectful to the Character, The Greatest Generation, and soldiers everywhere. I like the Punisher, but if you put him in that costume, than you are showing that we accept violence even more today and that it is alright for the symbol of our country to just kill our enemies without any regard. But what Marvel doesn't understand is that this "hipper generation" does not want to read that Captain America, if anything this "hipper generation" feels robbed that they cannot read a Captain America with a true hero that spread the ideals of the best part of America. So, if Terrorist Q wants to do this than count this "hipper generation" out because you robbed us of one of the greatest Americans, albeit fictional, this is why we read Steve Rogers and not some imposter. I know Frank will not be the Captain America of the Marvel Universe for long and he'll probably give it to Bucky, but still, Bucky is NOT Steve Rogers and Steve Rogers is THE Captain America and can be no legacy character.
That is this just one of the "hipper generations" two cents.
I know Joe Quesada will never read this post, but if it gets around to him he won't care because this jerk is all about making money all the time, no matter at whos expense.
Sales are the point. They are the purpose of his whole "existence". If sales improve with a new Cap, then they may keep the new Cap.
I am not endorsing this, as reflected in my previous post, but it is a factor.
Me? I stand ready for "Reign of the Captain Americas", starring the Punisher as the violent Captain America, Bucky as the young Captain America, The Falcon as the African-American Captain America, and a mystery character to be named later as the Cyborg Captain America... Maybe Silvermane.
I think that Marvel is waiting to see the fan's full reaction to him being shot.
Think of it as a test.
If the reaction hits Marvel in the pocketbook in a major way, they have made a way to keep Cap alive by Warbird's comments in Civil War: The Initiative.
If sales stay strong enough-Cap may die.
WWHulk may give them those sales.
Who knows? They may lose too many fans over the death of Cap.
Time will tell.
Cap represents American ideals and has been a part of American culture for decades.
People's reactions have been along the lines of those ideals as well.
Those ideals will not last forever as change is the only thing that's constant.
Until then, enjoy your freedom and comics.
This year in & outside of Marveldom is going to be a wyld ride for sure.
I made a space for it in the corner, but the Realms just HAD to have that footstool shaped like a turtle.
In the 'Realms's defense, that 'turtle' does have two katanas, ninja training, and a mask ...

It was indeed reported that Ms Marvel was lying to Spider-Woman. Steve Rogers is dead, period. But that doesn't mean that Cpatain america is gone for good.
Remaining X-Men I'm waiting for to be clixed...
Exodus, Random, Nate Grey aka X-Man, Sugar-Man
I have to ask a question. Why? Why do we tolerate this with our comics, not just Captain America and his death (which really ticks me off) but everything that has happened in both universes, particularly Marvel. Yes, comics need to grow or change and the characters and writing are infinitely different now as opposed to the golden age. We as consumers and fans are different as well. But some characters should be timeless; Batman, Superman, Captain America, and Spider-man are all characters that are icons of their respective companies and they have changed over the years some drastically and some less notably but they have changed. But if you buy anything dealing with the characters of a comic then you are casting a vote, you are showing that this is what you want, this what you like. You're buying into the character and what you like about it. So if the four I previously mentioned and the others that are out there as well, are as popular as they're supposed to be then why mess with it? As long as we show support for these types of stories and plot twists and overall bad writing, then it's going to continue. The bottom dollar is what they look at and if everyone that feels that strongly about it does something then the deconstruction of the hero, deaths of Iconic heroes, and stories such as Civil War wouldn't be good for business. As fans we do have that power.
Also, if the Punisher represents America as it is now, then what kinda country are we living in? I personally as an American citizen and comic book fan identify more with Captain America than the Punisher. I've never had an urge to shoot someone or be that particularly violent. I have, on the otherhand, been an outsider and deemed physically or socially inadequate at some point in my life and I have believed in something so bad that I was willing to make sacrifices in order to achieve my goal.
Just me venting and ranting a little bit. But if things in comics don't change, I'll cast my vote elsewhere.

Very Well said.
Captain America has Died and A Little Piece or a great big piece of America has died too. You are so right. If a Cold blooded killer like the Punisher is the mantle of freedom and symbol of America then what does that say for America and what Captain America and the Flag are supposed to stand for.
What is to be said fopr the Morale fiber of America and Americans? Captain America is about being true to what is right even if it wasn't cool. I have been with comics since I was old enough to read. I have seen the Evolution of books. the artwork and telling of the story has changed and that's okay. I have been doing just fine with the loss of thoughtbubbles and newsprint paper that the books were printed on and the X-Ray Vision glasses that they used to sell on the back cover that never fit or worked.
And the "grittieness" of Marvels world was what I liked about it. The Humanity of the Heros was the draw for me. it made it a differnet more Human world than DC. But now it is a World of Ugly Violence and a slow decline in the lack of morals.
I will say it again. Killing Captain America was all kinds of Wrong. More than A fictional Comic character died in issue #25. And the problem is nobody really seems to notice or care. Joe Queseda sure doesn't. And that is sad.
But if Captain America is the avatar of the spirit of the U.S.A., then Steve Rogers no longer reflects that spirit and perhaps Punisher does?
If the Spirit of America is a Cold Blooded Vigilante who kills people because he thinks they're guilty It chills me to the bone and makes me fear for what My country is becoming.
I think these stories are more enjoyable if you don't constantly look for a hidden meaning regarding the state of the USA...maybe 'cause i'm Canadian, I dunno, i've got my own opinions on our neighbours to the south, but if you look hard enough, you can find connections and hidden meanings behind everything. I remember readind Lord of the Flies in high school and my teacher going over all the symbolism, and near the end of the book the navy comes and one guy has a gun...she said that was symbolic of power and authority...I went wtf he's in the freakin' navy, i'm pretty sure a lot of them carry guns (especially when going on wierd islands) for you know, protection and whatnot.
Anyways, I originally didn't like Captain America at all, for obvious reasons, but since reading more Avengers and Civil War I started to like him, so I was kinda sad to see him go...but it does set up some interesting stories, so i'd like to see where it goes.
The Greatest Generation refers to the American men and women who came of age during the Great Depression and World War II. This is the generation that, in many ways, shaped the future of the country. This accounts of the people who served our country during World War II and depicts the spirit of the United States and captures its moral character. Their work and sacrifice ensured that our way of life was preserved.

EVERY generation shapes the future of the country. THAT generation shaped the PRESENT of the country.

Listen, I'm only telling you what generation is referred to as the Greatest Generation, and since Steve Rogers is from that time era he would be considered part of that Generation. Maybe you don't understand why they are called that, but those are the people from the Greatest Generation.

No, I don't understand why they're called that. Other generations have accomplished just as much, if not more, than that generation. It just didn't involve blowing people to smithereens, so somehow it's not worth as much.
