He's a lot like most comic actors, in that his comedies were great for the time they were released, but times have changed and they don't quite work anymore except through nostalgia.
His non-comedy work? Not half bad. I'm still waiting for him, Robin Williams, and Bill Murray to make a non-comedy film together.

I'd even throw Jim Carrey into that film, and then love it immensely.
My wife is a big Sandler fan for some reason. I think his movies are uneven at best.
Uneven = Odd? How right you are. I like his older movies. The new ones are... unwatchable (Bed Time Stories, Jack and Jill, That's My Boy, etc etc etc.) You are correct that the awful ones far outweigh the good ones. At least he's not as bad as Will Ferrel, who I can't stand in anything except Austin Powers and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. And that is all I have to say about that.

It's a PT Anderson picture, so it's got that going for it. It also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a matress salesman/phone sex ring manager/extortionist. All those goofy characters that Sandler normally plays? Imagine if, for one minute, they had a moment of self-awareness that revealed to them how empty and shallow their lives were, and how alone they are, and how they're just *barely* keeping this current of violent rage suppressed with madcap antics - *that* is his character in Punch-Drunk Love.
I love There Will Be Blood. (Check your 7.88 walmart value bin for it on Blu-Ray) Also, Funny People was rather interesting as a take on Sandler playing a Sandlereque character that's generally serious. Not really sure I liked it, but it was definitely different.
I enjoy my Adam Sandler. It's a guilty pleasure. Wedding Singer, Little Nicky, Longest Yard, Airheads, and Waterboy are all films I've seen more than a few times.
I've come to realize just about every Jason Statham movie is the same thing, but that thing is really fun.
