I could probably make more money elsewhere, but in terms of job stability non-profits are where its at. Do your job well, they keep you. The trick is picking one that's large enough so that it won't go under if someone else decides to pull a Madoff.
You could also add "picking one that isn't stupid enough to fall for a Ponzi scheme," come to that.
Well, I'd say that the other trick is finding one that's stable and member-supported and not reliant on grant funding. 'Cuz with the latter, your job security is pretty much dependent on how talented a grant writer you've got.

Oh definitely. Right now I'm with Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, one of the oldest chapters of a national organization backed by the area's largest industrialists, and boosted by the United Way. It'd take some horrible sequence of calamities to take the organization down.
Well, I hope, anyway.
The only job I got laid off from non-profit wise was Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, due to our Development (fundraising) office having expanded from 23 to 50 employees just as the financial crisis and Madoff hit at the same damn time. Carl J. Shapiro was one of our most ardent supporters, and he got nearly wiped out by Madoff.
Great thing was that the place turned into such a back-biting cesspool at the end that I was smiling when I finally got my pink slip. Celebrated with a shot of Patron and filed for unemployment.
SIDEBAR: Incidentally, use BIDMC as an example of how NOT to announce layoffs. Basically do anything other than say "We're looking to lay off about 800 people sometime in the next 6-8 months, so...yeah, watch out for that, 'kay? Happy Monday!"

In all seriousness, I have the easiest job I've ever had right now, so I find myself very bored with it. I also have no problem doing most of the housework since I don't feel like I work a "real" job.
Just learned that my grandmother passed away tonight. And apparently it is my parents' wedding anniversary, too.
So it was a good thing my parents weren't stuck on a train to come see me after all.

####, man...sorry to hear that.

On one hand, losing a loved one is awful. On the other hand, most would consider living to 95 as a major bonus. Plus, she got to know you.

Yes, she definitely had a good run. And since my mother had the main responsibility to care for her, I think on some level it is nice to have it finally be over.
