What concerns me is that this may be the herald of MW 2.0 - not that this would be a bad thing, just that I hope it's a little more "compatible" with the previous version than MK 2.0 was with 1.0.
Oh, and about the OmniMech idea: I've been pushing this for a long time, so I've had time to consider the idea a bit. Here are my thoughts:
- For MW 2.0, do away with the idea that Unique 'Mechs are associated with any one pilot.
- Instead, just make certain loadouts "Unique" (just like the ones we have now) and have them be slightly better - SLIGHTLY! - or just different, like LEs are now. The unit has a star on its base, but no pilot name.
- THEN, in every booster where you get a Unique, include a card of stats for the 'Mech's pilot. This card represents the 'Mech's pilot.
- This card has a point cost, and grants specific modifiers to whatever 'Mech the pilot is "in".
- The point cost is reduced if the pilot is in a 'Mech from his or her own faction - possibly even reduced a tad more if he or she is "in" the actual 'Mech associated with the card.
- Have the cards be printable online, BUT require that the player produce the unit it came with at official events.
- For some special events which are not as important as storyline events, and therefore might not normally warrant prize support(*gasp* like Unrestricteds!), print inexpensive "Weapon Configuration" cards which have similar effects to pilots, only lower. These could be used on any 'Mech, or, depending on how you spin it, you could have UNIQUE configs for certain factions only.
My son and I have talked about something along this line for awhile. Perhaps I got the idea from a previous post of yours - as I've been a lurker here for many months before joining.
It's a good idea! I like the pilot having certain abilities and having them point-costed. Seems to me you could have weapons and abilities cards too. Probably not all together though.
I like the ideas suggested by nthcircle and hakkenshi. If such changes were introduced I might be tempted to shell out the $.
Plus I have had some time to think after my initial reaction of anger towards Wizkids concerning this subject of phasing out sets. Wizkids has every right to change its product. Some feel it is all for profit. Some feel it can only improve the game. I feel both sides are right. No matter what happens Wizkids will lose some customers because of the change.
I consider myself a casual/fluff player/collector. I have tried to use every piece I have in my collection in tournaments. I haven't won a championship since last June. Most of my armies get blown off the field. My goal when I play is to have fun. It is interesting to see the looks on other players' faces when they see my army.
Once Wizkids starts phasing out old sets I will stop competing in restricted tournaments. I don't see myself purchasing boosters just so I have a legal army. I see myself waiting until a set goes obselete before I try to acquire pieces. I feel it would be my best chance to get some of those high priced and hard to find pieces without blowing a bundle of ca$h in the process. If this doesn't work I figure I will start playing CBT again.
Wizkids probably could do without players like me. I have very little $ to spend on this game in the first place. I my income increases in the future I might look at trying for the restircted tournaments.
But I hope that Wizkids succeed in their business. I have had fun playing this game. I like the entire Mechwarrior/Battletech universe.

I don't know, maybe you COULD have them all together. After all, if you pay a higher point cost...
Either way, I say it'd be a lot of fun.
Hey, WizKids, if you want to steal my idea, I SWEAR I won't sue - I'd be too busy buying boosters! ;)
