if there was a pro circuit, but someone different won every time and there was no real 'pros', do you think the game would die?
As far as I know, there hasn't been a repeat PC champion yet.
What I've seen from my 'career' in VS, the players who act like dicks are the ones on the local PCQ level. Out here in NC, where parents in some counties RIP OUT pages in brand new health textbooks because they're 'offensive and against their religion,' there aren't too many pro players that I know of. Chuck Bell used to live here but I'm pretty sure he moved or something because he never goes to events anymore. Without the pros, 'wannabe pros' dominate the PCQs and sneak previews. One person comes strongly to mind, I won't name names but he made one top 8 at a 10K and thinks he's god's gift to VS. Anyways, these people who never have real 'success' at the game turn to finding a legion of local barns who follow them everywhere, kiss their feet, hold their fries without stealing them, etc. etc.
Now, these wannabe pros have egos the size of the moon. They will never admit being wrong, they will never admit having lost to someone (they always find some way to complain when they lose, like 'you just tried to stall me out! I wanted to go get lunch between rounds but you played too ####ing slow!') and never really try to help new players into the game. They act like jerks when you play them in PCQs and such, and they're just people who you gotta learn how to deal with.
However, the 'real' pro players who have made a decent chunk of cash playing this game seem like pretty nice guys on this forum. Yeah, some people are arrogant (and even worse, some are Duke fans  [kidding Dalton]) but all in all they do contribute to the community and don't act like selfish jerks. The reason they don't showcase their tech for Pro Circuits is because, like the rest of us, they kind of are making the trip out there to win some money (and other things like have fun, but the money usually offsets the travel costs) and keeping their deck secret gives them the best chance of that. However, in a defined format, pros are very helpful in talking about what decks are good and which ones aren't.
So, to end my little rant, I'll just say this: unless you have a lot of true professional players in your local scene, don't decide every pro is a dick until you go to the Pro Circuit.
Jeff Donais told us not to be dicks, and we never forgot it.
The other game is notorious for its dickish pros. Vs. System provided a fresh start, and we have made the most of it.
Sure, we talk about this subject way too often... but who's to say that our talks have not been a big part of the creation of this dick-free Pro Circuit that we all benefit from? We identify the dicks and expose them for what they are, and then everyone else knows they need to keep their dickery in check.
Fortunately, even our local PCQs are dick-free in Florida. We chop them off as soon as they pop up.
