2. As I've stated already, I'm interested in getting back into Magic casually, primarily because I love the horror theme of the upcoming set. However, I wanted to read up on the rules to make sure that I'm up-to-date on them. The next time someone complains about the finer rules details of Heroclix being too complicated, I'm sending them to the Wizards of the Coast website.
The Golden Age Player's Guide for Heroclix is 137 pages, including the current wording for every power, ability, feat, alternate team ability, battlefield condition, and map rules. Without the current wordings, it only comes to 43 pages. If we add the 10 page Comprehensive Tournament Rules document and 24 page Core Rulebook, we're up to 171 pages with the current wordings, or 77 pages without them.
The equivalent Comprehensive Rules document for Magic is 189 pages, and contains NO information about errata or details about individual cards. That's over twice the length of the document for the same type of information.
That's not the fault of Wizards per se. There are a few reasons for it. First, Magic card effects are analogous to special powers. Magic has been around a lot longer than post-Avengers Heroclix, so there are a lot more unique interactions that have to have rules created to resolve them.
Second, unlike Heroclix tends to do, in Magic if a contradictory situation is created an entire new section of the rulebook is also created to explain any future interactions that work similarly, rather than clarifying that specific interaction.
Third, the Heroclix timing rules are very simple compared to Magic (as they should be for a miniatures game). A huge chunk of the Magic rules are concerned with doing things during the resolution of other things, while in Heroclix for the most part you can't respond to an action with another action.
I'm not saying that the Magic rules aren't convoluted, but they're not something that you could condense down to fifty pages and have the game still be the same if you went in and just started snipping and consolidating things.

That is true, but we have to abandon the operation if he gets too close to Gollum's cave. Ogres are scared of invisible cave creatures.

No, no. "That guy" isn't an ogre. He's, you know, "that guy".

I would love to see the Golden Age Player's Guide trimmed down to less than 100 pages. If it were up to me, I'd eliminate the current wordings for powers, abilities, feats, etc. that have not received a change or are exactly the same as in the Core Rulebook.
Of course, it's not up to me but I really don't want to see the Player's Guides ballooning into the size of Warhammer or Warmachine codexes/army books...

The nice thing is that you can just print out the front portion, which only has clarifications/changes and not the entire text. (I like having the full-text though, so I always print the whole thing.)

Not sure why 100 pages is needed think that would make new people turn away from wanting to play the game if they need to read 100 pages of rules to play...

I"m not sure if we're talking about Magic or Heroclix, but in either case, the core rulebook is much smaller than that. The player's guide/comprehensive tournament rules are additional documents that are not required to play.
